Restaurant gets decision in planning battle to keep controversial signs Council planning officials had said the lights were too garish and not in keeping with the quaint town centre Council planning officials had urged committee members to reject the application to keep two internally lit fascia signs positioned on either side of the arched entrance to Il Gusto (Image: Local Democracy Reporting Service) An Italian restaurant in a Welsh market town appears poised to triumph in its fight to retain illuminated signage which the local authority had threatened legal action over in what became a surprisingly controversial planning case. ‌ Following previous planning meetings council planning officials had urged Monmouthshire County Council planning committee members to reject the application to keep two internally-lit fascia signs positioned on either side of the arched entrance to Il Gusto restaurant in Abergavenny town centre, stating that the lights were too garish and not in keeping with the quaint town centre. ‌ But planning committee members have since indicated they were unwilling to refuse the retrospective application lodged by the restaurant's landlord Peter Woolley and have now dismissed the recommendation. Monmouthshire council planning officer Andrew Jones explained that the heritage officer had advised rejection due to the lighting's effect on the Abergavenny's conservation area. While the Frogmore Street premises isn't listed the location is recognised as the town's "historic core". ‌ Mr Jones recognised that the sole objection to the application, which received backing from 14 public supporters and Abergavenny Town Council, came from the heritage officer, stating: "We fully acknowledge the significant support received but the objection of the heritage officer, given the nature of the application, is quite significant." Il Gusto's illuminated signs during the evening (Image: Local Democracy Reporting Service) He emphasised that the heritage officer's opinions were "important" in assessing the impact on the conservation area and mentioned that "weighting should be given to them". ‌ Owen Davies, representing the applicant, voiced dissatisfaction with Monmouthshire council for not providing specific supplementary planning guidance on shopfronts and argued: "We believe this has led to inconsistencies in decisions that have disproportionately affected small independent businesses while granting approval for national chains." Mr Davies noted that Il Gusto had modified the fascia signs from the site's previous restaurant when it opened just over a year ago and aimed to mirror the style of the former Prezzo establishment. He pointed out that the signage is switched off at 10pm when the restaurant closes and highlighted that other nearby signs, made from UPVC, remain lit until the early hours. ‌ Mr Jones said the 2016 conservation area appraisal has provided guidance on design and said the designation is important to businesses and attracts visitors. Conservative councillor Rachel Buckler praised Il Gusto as a "very good Italian restaurant" and described the building as "very handsome" yet she agreed with the recommendation to refuse permission, stating: "It is inappropriate to the character of the building and something akin to a fast food restaurant in a much more urban setting than a market town in Monmouthshire." Echoing the sentiment Abergavenny Pen y Fal ward Conservative Maureen Powell said: "I do feel to light it up is going too far." ‌ Croesonen Labour councillor Su McConnell expressed she was "full of admiration" for the heritage team and found it "odd" to oppose their advice, especially noting that Il Gusto is situated opposite the brightly-lit Tesco store with its expansive windows. Following the committee's decision to dismiss the recommendation to deny the application there was a bit of a muddle over whether a new report endorsing the proposal was necessary as some councillors had suggested postponing the decision. Council solicitor Joanne Chase mentioned that further discussions with the applicant would take place yet planning officer Philip Thomas said: "If members are minded to approve there is not much point having a negotiation." Much like the recently launched and heavily praised Renault 5 EV, the new Micra combines nostalgic design elements - such as its bug eye headlights with cutting-edge tech. With two battery options available, the 40kWh offering a range of 198 miles and the 52kWh delivering an impressive 260 miles, the Micra shares its platform with the Renault 5 - a result of Nissan's longstanding collaboration with the French Renault Group. It also shares cabin similarities with the Renault 5, such as fabric materials and dual-screen setups, but also features some unique touches, such as Mount Fuji graphics throughout the interior to distinguish the Micra. But while the 5 went away for multiple years before its return, the Micra has been a beloved vehicle in Britain consistently since its debut in 1983. Over six million units have been sold globally spanning six generations, with the newest being by-far the largest with a more SUV-like design in a bid to attract family buyers - featuring wider proportions and robust styling. Officially, three trim levels will be available at launch, starting with the entry-level Engage, priced at £22,995 and comes with a 40kWh battery. The Advanced is a mid-tier option, priced at £24,995 for the 40kWh version and £26,995 for the 52kWh battery. Finally, the Evolve is the top-tier trim, priced at £29,865 with a 52kWh battery. Part of Nissan's strategy to recover from financial losses and reinvigorate its brand, the company has faced a string of challenges over the last 18 months or so, including declining sales, difficulties transitioning to electric vehicles and increased competition from Chinese brands. New Nissan Leaf tested - it's bigger, better and goes further Furthermore, the company's troubles have been compounded by scandals involving its former CEO, factory closures, job cuts and poor financial performance - including its worst returns in 25 years. But as part of its new strategy, the Japanese manufacturer is focussing heavily on electrification and aims to launch a range of new electrified models. As well as the Micra, the third-generation Leaf is expected by 2026, redesigned as a spacious family crossover. Electric versions of the wildly popular Juke and Qashqai models are also set for Europe by 2026, using advanced platforms. Nissan also aims to reduce production costs for EVs by 30% by 2030, making them as affordable as petrol cars - thanks to the use of modular manufacturing, integrated powertrains and battery innovations. Nissan's Formula E racing team is also helping to develop tech for future high-performance electric cars under their famous Nismo division, potentially also influencing road car designs. Sun Motors supremo Rob Gill recently took the new Micra on a road test and said it proves the small car isn't dead, with the latest iteration a million miles better than old ones.

Walk through the beloved, turquoise-hued Lina Stores deli on the corner of Brewer Street, past shelves of pasta and polenta, and, through an unassuming door at the end, you'll find the entrance to their subterranean drinking den Bar Lina. There is no signage. If you know, you know. Small but perfectly formed, with room for just 28 quaffers tucked along the deep red velvet banquettes and high bar stools, it's the low-lit, after hours antithesis of their bright and breezy upstairs shop. The menu, however, unites the two. Daily taglieri boards of meats, cheeses and fat slabs of focaccia vary depending on the deli's current wares, while the all- Italian cocktail menu offers a comprehensive selection of spritzes and negronis, plus innovative signatures. A Bloody Martini remains almost clear with its additional tomato water element, while the Porto Nuovo - named after the Milanese district is heavy and sweet, made with grappa, vermouth and cola syrup.
