Red Devils arrive to grand welcome from home fans
United are in town for the Maybank Challenge Cup as they take on the Asean All-Stars at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil on Wednesday (May 28)
At the W Hotel, the English giants were greeted by around 200 cheering fans who waited for the team's arrival for several hours.
Fans roared when the players stepped off the bright red bus with the club's logo, and the cheers kept going and players waved to fans as they walked past the hotel lobby.
Despite United's 15th place finish in the league, the support the club got was limitless as supporters cheered on the players.
Among the notable faces were Bruno Fernandes, Dutch internationals Matthijs de Ligt and Joshua Zirkzee, along with fullback Diogo Dalot.
Led by head coach Ruben Amorim, United departed for Malaysia after their final premier league match against Aston Villa, where they won 2-0.
Although they did not play against Villa, Andre Onana, Luke Shaw, and Alejandro Garnacho are in town as well.
United last visited Malaysia in 2009 when they played two friendly matches against Malaysia XI.
After playing in Kuala Lumpur, the club will continue their post-season tour in Hong Kong on May 30.
Meanwhile, the Asean All-Stars will be without Peeradol Chamrasamee and Asnawi Mangkualam.
Peeradol withdrew due to the recent birth of his child, while Asnawi has been called up to the Indonesian national team.

Indonesian Alwi eyes world stage spotlight after taking Viktor's spot
Indonesia's Alwi Farhan. - AFP PETALING JAYA: Indonesia's rising star Alwi Farhan could be the one to make the loudest noise at the World Championships after earning a last-minute call-up. The world No. 23 was promoted from the reserves list following the withdrawal of Denmark's two-time world champion Viktor Axelsen, who pulled out of the men's singles event from Aug 25-31 in Paris due to injury. Just last week, Alwi underlined his form by clinching the World Tour Super 300 Macau Open title, defeating Malaysia's Justin Hoh in the final. Now, the 20-year-old is determined to make the most of his debut appearance on badminton's biggest stage. "I'm really thankful to get this opportunity. I never expected to play in the world meet," said Alwi in an interview posted in the Indonesian National Badminton Association (PBSI) website. "I'm excited as this will be my first world meet but I need to control my emotions. I want to make the most of this opportunity and gain lots of experience. "I want to prepare well and give my all. Now that it's confirmed, I need to focus fully on training." Alwi has been Indonesia's most promising player since winning the world junior title in 2023. The youngster has steadily moved up the rankings after progressing to the senior level and is currently Indonesia's second highest ranked men's singles player behind world No. 5 Jonatan Christie. Alwi only started competing in World Tour Super 750 and 1000 tournaments this year and the world meet will present him with another platform to showcase his abilities. Meanwhile, Jonatan and Anthony Ginting will be the other Indonesian representatives in the men's singles in Paris. Surprisingly, no Indonesian shuttler has won a medal in the men's singles in the prestigious event since Tommy Sugiarto claimed bronze in the 2014 edition in Copenhagen. Taufik Hidayat was the last Indonesian to win the men's singles title when he triumphed in 2005 in Anaheim.

Man United boss Amorim hails Sesko's 'great potential' after big-money move
LONDON: New Manchester United striker Benjamin Sesko has all the attributes needed to help bolster their attack, manager Ruben Amorim said as he hopes to unlock the 22-year-old Slovenian's full potential after his big-money move to Old Trafford. Sesko completed his 76.5-million-euro ($89-million) switch from German side RB Leipzig to United on Saturday, with a further 8.5 million euros in bonuses. He signed a contract until 2030 to complete a new-look front three alongside fellow close-season signings Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha. The Slovenia international, capped 41 times, scored 39 goals in 87 appearances across all competitions for Leipzig. "He has the characteristics that we needed," Amorim told MUTV on Saturday. "Ben is a player - with all the information that we have - that we need to stop the guy from working, not the opposite! "So that is also important. He's really young. He's good in the air, he's good at running the channels, good on the ball. I think he has great potential. I think he can improve a lot and, for sure, he is going to feel at home in our club. "He has the right character to be in this group, so I'm really happy to have him." Sesko was introduced at Old Trafford before Saturday's friendly match against Italian side Fiorentina, which United won 5-4 on penalties after drawing 1-1. "He is going to notice, since the first day and first training, that he is in the right place," Amorim added. "He is going to a new building (at Carrington), that is also important. Things are getting better but, in the end, we need to win games." United, who have spent around 200 million pounds ($270 million) following their 15th-place finish in the Premier League last season - their lowest in the top flight in 51 years - begin their new league campaign at home against Arsenal on August 17.--REUTERS

Wrexham denied by Southampton late show on Championship return
LONDON: Wrexham suffered an agonising 2-1 defeat to two late Southampton goals on their return to English football's second tier after 43 years, while Sheffield United were humbled 4-1 by Bristol City on yesterday. Backed by Hollywood stars Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, Wrexham have enjoyed a dream ascent from the National League to the Championship with three consecutive promotions. After another summer of heavy investment in the transfer market, the Welsh side looked set to make a flying start to their ambition to reach the Premier League. The visitors led 1-0 at half-time thanks to a Josh Windass penalty and could have been further in front as Windass also hit the bar. "I think when we reflect, it's a very proud day for the club playing at this level and there was a lot of positives for us," said Wrexham boss Phil Parkinson. "The new lads came in and have done really well but the existing players as well. I thought they were really good. "That gives us great heart for the season ahead." Southampton, relegated from the Premier League last season, were under the orders of Will Still for the first time and the former Lens coach had a telling hand to play in the turnaround. Still brought left-back Ryan Manning off the bench in the final quarter and the Ireland international secured a memorable three points for the Saints with a goal and assist. Manning's brilliant free-kick on 90 minutes levelled before he crossed for Jack Stephens to fire in the winner six minutes into added time. "It was crazy," said Still. "Good to show a bit of grit and determination. To bring the energy and place alive which probably helped us bundle the ball over the line is good." Ruben Selles' tenure as Blades boss got off to a nightmare start as Scott Twine's double and goals from Ross McCrorie and Anis Mehmeti gave Gerhard Struber a commanding win in his first match as Bristol City boss. Ryan Mason enjoyed a winning start as West Brom manager as Isaac Price's 15th minute goal secured a 1-0 win over Blackburn. Millwall shocked highly-fancied Norwich 2-1 at Carrow Road thanks to substitute Macaulay Langstaff's late winner. Dael Fry's first goal in more than three years ensured Rob Edwards' reign as Middlesbrough head coach got off to a winning start with a 1-0 victory over Swansea. Adrian Segecic scored on his debut to give Portsmouth a 1-0 win at Oxford. Stoke struck twice in stoppage time to beat Derby 3-1. Charlton also scored a winner in added time to beat Watford 1-0 on their return to the Championship. Coventry and Hull played out a 0-0 stalemate, while QPR and Preston shared the points in a 1-1 draw. Birmingham, bankrolled by an ownership group containing seven-time Super Bowl winning NFL quarterback Tom Brady, began their campaign with a 1-1 draw at home to Ipswich after conceding a controversial stoppage time penalty.
