'Perfect transition' - Lambert backs Lallana to 'become an excellent coach'
Lallana, 37, has joined Will Still's backroom team as first-team coach following his playing retirement at the end of the 2024/25 season.

The academy graduate made nearly 300 appearances for Southampton, returning for an ill-fated campaign before hanging up his boots.
Lambert, who dubbed his former England teammate Lallana "the best player I've played with", thinks the ex-midfielder is making the "perfect transition".
Speaking on BBC Radio Solent, Lambert recalled a meeting dictated by Lallana, which saw Saints turn around their poor Premier League form.
Asked what leadership skills stood out most in his time with Lallana, Lambert explained: 'The determination not to lose and the courage to speak out when needed.

Adam Lallana (centre left) and Rickie Lambert (far right) celebrate after winning the JPT. 'On more than one occasion during meetings, if there was something that needed to be said, Adam would say it to the manager or one of the lads.
'Many times at halftime, before the manager got to say anything, Adam would be the first one to tell them, clearly, what was wrong and what needed to happen.
'He was always spot on. He had an excellent football brain. There was one moment in particular, going into the Premier League.
'We were struggling to get a point on the board, and we had a meeting. He confronted the coaching staff about the way we were playing.

'He was very determined, listening to every player who expressed their opinion. It went on for two hours, but it was the best thing that ever happened to us.
'We went out of that meeting with clarity, which we all needed, and then we started to pick up points. That's what he's capable of.'
He added: 'I think he will go on now and become an excellent coach. If you lose the identity of your team, you are in trouble.
Adam Lallana barks instructions at Saints players ahead of a Premier League fixture.'What Southampton had going up the leagues was a core of players who believed in the Southampton way. That was kind of lost.

'They brought players in, and they were brilliant, but once you keep doing that, you lose the Southampton way. Adam is there now and in a strong position.
'He's one of the main coaches, and he is going to be making it clear that if you join this club, you are joining because you love it.
'He will make sure that each player is giving 100 per cent. Will Still needs players like Ads who have played in the Premier League.
'The way he planned his last couple of years, getting closer to home and then finishing at Southampton, sounded perfect for me.
'He got a little taste for coaching last year, which would have given him a real taste of it. It's a perfect transition going into coaching at his beloved Saints."

England unchanged for Women's Rugby World Cup opener against the USA
England coach John Mitchell has named an unchanged team from their final warm-up game for their Women's Rugby World Cup opener against the United States in Sunderland on Friday. The starting 15 overwhelmed France 40-6 in the second of England's two warm-up fixtures earlier this month. Zoe Aldcroft continues to captain the team from blindside flanker, with No 8 Alex Matthews and openside Sadia Kabeya alongside her in the back row and Abbie Ward and Morwenna Talling the starting locks. The pack is completed by a powerful front row of Hannah Botterman, Amy Cokayne and Maud Muir. Behind the scrum, half-backs Natasha Hunt and Zoe Harrison will look to dictate play, with Meg Jones and Tatyana Heard in the centres. Scrum-half Hunt will be making her first World Cup appearance since 2017 after being left out of the England squad at the last tournament. Jess Breach and Abby Dow line-up on the wings, with full-back Ellie Kildunne, the reigning women's World Rugby player of the year, looking to add to an exceptional tally of 41 tries in 53 Tests a member of a dynamic back three. Tournament debutants Kelsey Clifford, Maddie Feaunati and Emma Sing are named as replacements, with veteran Emily Scarratt poised to win her 119th cap off the bench. But there is no place in the matchday 23 for former captain Marlie Packer. - 'Embrace the occasion' - Sunderland is best known as a football rather than rugby hotbed, with the Stadium of Light, the venue for Friday's match, home to the northeast city's Premier League team. But with officials keen to showcase the national appeal of the Red Roses, their pool matches are being spread round England rather than just taken to traditional rugby heartlands. And with 40,000 tickets sold, Friday's fixture will be played in front of a record crowd for an opening game of a Women's Rugby World Cup. "We have been building nicely into the tournament and now we're excited to get our campaign underway,' Mitchell said as he announced his team on Wednesday. "Sunderland have been a great host city thus far and we know it'll be a record crowd for a Women's Rugby World Cup opening match which shows the appetite for rugby in this region and for the competition ahead." The New Zealander added: "We want to embrace the occasion whilst understanding we have to remain where our feet are and earn the right to progress through the pool stage." Host nation England head into the event as favourites, having lost only once in their past 58 matches -- a defeat by New Zealand in the Covid-delayed 2022 World Cup final. In spite of winning six successive Six Nations Grand Slams, however, England have also lost five of the last six World Cup finals to New Zealand. The United States are due to name their side later Wednesday. Pool A also features Australia and Samoa, who meet on Saturday, with the top two in each of the four groups going through to the quarter-finals. England team (15-1) Ellie Kildunne; Abby Dow, Megan Jones, Tatyana Heard, Jess Breach; Zoe Harrison, Natasha Hunt; Alex Matthews, Sadia Kabeya, Zoe Aldcroft (capt); Abbie Ward, Morwenna Talling; Maud Muir, Amy Cokayne, Hannah Botterman Replacements: Lark Atkin-Davies, Kelsey Clifford, Sarah Bern, Rosie Galligan, Maddie Feaunati, Lucy Packer, Emily Scarratt, Emma Sing Coach: John Mitchell (NZL) jdg/bsp

This NFL record could be in Puka's wheelhouse
Puka Nacua re-wrote the record books as a rookie in 2023 and the Rams receiver is once again in a perfect situation to challenge NFL history again in 2025. No player has ever had 12 100-yard games in a season before, but a healthy Nacua is the exact right person to be the first. With Matthew Stafford's health improving by the day, and Sean McVay calling the plays, why not more Puka history being made this year? I'm not just saying that Puka could have 12 100-yard games. If he and Stafford manage a healthy 17 games together, Puka Nacua will put up some numbers that football fans have never seen before. Here are a few reasons why: 1) Stafford's history of delivering 100-yard games in a season The first reason to think that Nacua could have 12 100-yard games is the fact that Cooper Kupp and Calvin Johnson are currently tied for the NFL record of 100-yard receiving games in a season with 11 each. The only other player to do it is Michael Irvin in 1995. Megatron had 11 100-yard games in 2012 Kupp had 11 100-yard games in 2021 After those three players, another nine players are tied with 10 100-yard games in a single season, including Torry Holt for the 2003 Rams. Puka Nacua's 7 100-yard games in 2023 is the second-most in NFL history for a rookie, behind only Bill Groman's 9 in 1960. Harlon Hill, Odell Beckham Jr, and Justin Jefferson are the only other rookies to have seven alongside Puka. The 7 100-yard games in 2023 was the second-most for any receiver in the NFL. 2) Puka's prolific career to date Since he entered the NFL, Puka is tied with AJ Brown for the second-most 100-yard receiving games in the league despite the fact that he missed six games in 2024: Amon-Ra St. Brown, 13 games Brown, 12 games Puka, 12 games Tyreek Hill, 11 games CeeDee Lamb, 11 games Ja'Marr Chase, 10 games Justin Jefferson, 10 games Given that Chase and JJ are considered the two best in the league, it's notable that Puka has more 100-yard games per start than either of them since 2023. Puka has hit 100 yards in 43% of his career NFL games, a ridiculously-high mark. Now consider this: Nacua also has games of 181 yards and 97 yards out of three playoff starts. In addition to having 5 100+ yards games in his 11 appearances in 2024, Nacua also had games of 97 and 98 yards. He was basically 5 yards shy of having 7 100-yard games out of 11 starts in 2024. Which he also did with Cooper Kupp still playing in most of those contests, so even though he has to share the ball with Davante Adams in 2025, that may not be a problem here. 3) Longer season, more passes Sean McVay and Stafford don't mind having a 'go to our best player and don't stop doing that' mentality. The Rams have a great duo with Nacua and Davante, but the depth at receiver is questionable and Adams is one of the oldest starting receivers in the league. If Adams misses any games, that will just focus more attention on Nacua. Now you might be saying that's easier for the defense to shut him down, but it hasn't been the case so far: Nacua had 501 yards in the first 4 weeks without Kupp in 2023, and those were the first 4 games of Puka's career Puka continued to be elite after he returned from missing six games in 2024: With 17 games on the schedule now, Nacua will have one extra opportunity to hit 12 100-yard games. It may only be a matter of him and Stafford not missing any of them. 4) Puka can join elite '4,000 yards in 3 years' club Only three receivers in NFL history have hit 4,000 receiving yards in the first three seasons of their career combined: Jefferson, 4825 yards (2020-2022) Randy Moss, 4163 yards (1998-2000) OBJ, 4,122 yards (2014-2016) Nacua needs to have a monster season to get there, but he can do it. Nacua has 2,476 yards in his first two seasons, which is the seventh-most in NFL history despite him missing six games last year. Only Jefferson, OBJ, Moss, Groman, Chase, and Jerry Rice have more. So Nacua needs 1,524 yards in 2025 to reach 4,000. It's a lot, but it's hardly what I would call impossible: It's less than 50 more yards than Puka Nacua had as a rookie in 2023. With that many yards, Puka will pass A.J. Green for the fourth-most by a player in his first three seasons of all-time. If Nacua catches 105 passes in 2025, he will pass OBJ and Jarvis Landry for the 5th-most by a player through his first three seasons. Nacua could also join Jefferson and OBJ as the only receivers in history to average at least 90 receiving yards per game in his first three seasons. Nacua is averaging 88.4 yards per game so far. It's not about the yards, but…why not root for history? Yeah, we know. It doesn't really matter if Puka Nacua sets some records that nobody really knows about anyway. But he could. He's capable, he has the talent and he's in the perfect situation for it, so why not hope for the best? Nacua has already made history, not just for being a rookie, not just for being a fifth round pick, but also for being a receiver of any kind. He's one of the best in the NFL today. He's one of the best the NFL has ever seen through two seasons before. Could he be the best through three seasons too?

Arne Slot makes HUGE Richard Hughes contract demand
Liverpool are still in the midst of a landmark summer transfer campaign. The Reds have spent close to £300m since winning the Premier League title on new players. Florian Wirtz, Hugo Ekitike, Milos Kerkez, Jeremie Frimpong, Giovanni Leoni and Giorgi Mamardashvili have all come through the door for the champions. 🔴 Shop the LFC 2025/26 adidas home range Shop the LFC Store 🚨2025/26 LFC x adidas range🚨 LFC x adidas Shop the home range today! And to balance the books, sporting director Richard Hughes has also overseen the departures of several first-team players. 🔴 That list is headed by Luis Diaz and Darwin Nunez - while Jarell Quansah, Ben Doak, Caoimhin Kelleher, Tyler Morton, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Nat Phillips have also left. Konate future uncertain But Liverpool are by no means done. We could see Alexander Isak arrive as the club's new No9 before the window is out - although Newcastle have not yet agreed to release their star striker. Marc Guehi is another who could arrive - with the Crystal Palace captain out of contract in 2026. Part of the reason that Liverpool are interested in the England international is that Ibrahima Konate is in the same boat. Under contract until 2026, Liverpool are unsure whether the France defender will be at the club next season. Arne Slot wants to keep Konate Accordingly there have been suggestions that the 26-year-old could either be sold this summer or else replaced by Guehi on a Bosman in 2026. However according to a new report in Defensa Central, Liverpool are NOT giving up on Konate - and Arne Slot in particular is doing all he can to ensure the title-winning stopper stays. 'Arne Slot has asked his directors for an extra effort to prevent the Frenchman from leaving Anfield,' the report reads. Konate signed for Liverpool back in 2021 from RB Leipzig but has only come into his own as a bonafide top-class player in the last 12 months or so. © IMAGO Konate's sizeable contract demands He earns around £140k per week on his current contract - and it's been reported that he wants £200k per week to renew. Of course Real Madrid can not only offer a blockbuster salary but also a sizeable signing-on fee - estimated at €18m. The financial lure is strong but the indications are that Slot is asking his club to pull out all the stops to prevent Konate from leaving.
