Taysom Hill, Foster Moreau start Saints training camp on the PUP list

USA Today22-07-2025
When the New Orleans Saints kick off their first training camp practice on Wednesday, two of their teammates will be watching from the sidelines. Tight end Foster Moreau and do-it-all chess piece Taysom Hill were each placed on the physically unable to perform list (PUP) on Tuesday, per Saints general manager Mickey Loomis. While both guys are trending in the right direction after suffering knee injuries last season, neither of them were cleared in time for the first day of practice.
This was expected. Moreau hurt his knee in the last game of the season. Hill tore his ACL midway through 2024. Loomis wouldn't put any time table in place, but he said everything has been positive for Hill so far, and he expects him to play in 2025. We'll just have to wait and see when he's available.
As for Moreau? He's been active all offseason, helping rookie quarterback Tyler Shough with throwing drills at Tulane's Yulman Stadium and attending minicamps and OTAs at the team practice facility as a spectator. Moore praised him as exactly the type of veteran presence they want in the locker room: "He is everything we want in our program. I think he's a great example, he can't do much of anything from a physical standpoint, (but) he's in every meeting, he's out there every day. He's leading the group. He's got a voice, and you hear it, during 7-on-7 periods, chewing and yelling at people left and right."
It'll just have to be a minute before Moreau and Hill make their presence felt on the practice field, wearing helmets and shoulder pads like their teammates. It remains to be seen what kind of role Moore envisions for each of them in his offense but it's good to hear he's excited for both of them to dig into the playbook.

Longhorns duo Hill Jr., Lefau selected to Butkus Award watch list

As the college football season draws closer by the day, excitement is building for what the Texas Longhorns will accomplish. They will again be anchored by a stellar defense that has many familiar faces. On Wednesday, they received national recognition as Anthony Hill Jr. and Liona Lefau were honored on the preseason watch list for the 2025 Butkus Award. For Hill, it is the second straight year he has been chosen for the preseason watch list. That comes as no surprise after the numbers that he put up last year. The Ryan High School product led the team in tackles with 103 and tackles for a loss with 16.5. He also finished third in sacks with eight. He was one of the best players at his position and in college football. While the Kansas native continued to be a veteran anchor, he got some help from Lefau. The Laie, Hawaii native played in all 16 games last season, making 10 starts. He made the most of his opportunities with 63 tackles, which was the fifth most on the team. The talented linebacker also added two sacks and an interception to his resume. With Hill and Lefau back in the mix, the Longhorns' defense is in good hands. They made life difficult for quarterbacks last year, which should continue. Although Hill and Lefau are focused on bringing a national title to Austin, they wouldn't mind adding more hardware to their trophy cases. The Dick Butkus Award is given annually to the best linebacker in the nation. Since 2004, the only two Longhorns to take home the award were Derrick Johnson in 2004 and Sergio Kindle in 2009. Hill and Lefau are more than capable of ending that streak and now have added motivation. On November 4, Hill and Lefau will find out if they are semifinalists before the finalists are revealed on November 25. The winner will then be announced by December 10, before being honored at a ceremony at the University of Illinois' Memorial Stadium in early 2026. Hill and Lefau are hoping their travel plans will include a trip to Memorial Stadium.

Meet Mo Toure, a ‘fast, violent, physical' linebacker ready to elevate UM's defense

Corey Hetherman was caught by surprise at first when he saw linebacker Mohamed 'Mo' Toure had entered the transfer portal. Hetherman, entering his first season as defensive coordinator for the Miami Hurricanes, had coached Toure for two seasons when the two were both at Rutgers. The coach knew his former player would be a perfect fit in Coral Gables. 'He's a guy that obviously I have a previous relationship with,' Hetherman said, 'and a guy that knows the defense, knows the style of coaching that we have and fits what we're doing defensively.' Toure in early May committed to UM over Penn State, Indiana and North Carolina. As the Hurricanes begin fall practice Thursday and start their monthlong countdown to their marquee Aug. 31 season opener against Notre Dame at Hard Rock Stadium, Toure looks to be a pivotal piece in part of Miami's revamped defense. And Toure comes in with something to prove. He's entering his seventh and final season of college football. That journey started in 2019 and has been extended once by virtue of players getting an extra season due to the COVID-19 impacted 2020 season and then twice more due to ACL injuries that wiped out his 2022 and 2024 campaigns. Last year, he was named to the watch list for the Butkus Award, given annually to college football's top linebacker, before the second of those ACL injuries negated his chance to build on a breakout 2023 season — his final with Hetherman. He's full go now, and ready to leave his mark on the Hurricanes. 'I feel great,' Toure said Wednesday at the Hurricanes' media day ahead of fall practices, adding that Hurricanes director of football rehabilitation Peter Galasso and head football trainer Adam Bennett have helped get him settled in at the end of his rehab after transferring in. 'I've been doing everything. I've been running and cutting, changing directions, lifting with the boys.' And now the Hurricanes hope he will be a tackling machine once things start up for real. Toure had a breakout 2023 season, playing in all 13 games for Rutgers with eight starts. He was second on the team with 93 tackles and led the Scarlet Knights with nine-and-a-half tackles for loss. He had at least eight tackles five times, including in Rutgers' Pinstripe Bowl win against Miami. 'He's got tons of experience,' UM senior linebacker Wesley Bissainthe said of the 6-2, 236-pound Toure. 'He's big. He knows how to get to the ball. I feel like we're going to make an impact on the young guys in the room. That's the goal.' Toure's style of play? 'Fast, violent, physical,' he said. 'You'll hear me every time. Trust me.' But there came a time after that second ACL injury where Toure thought his football career might be over. The mental grind of having to go through the rehab process a second time was agonizing. 'When it first happened, I almost hung my cleats up,' Toure said. 'I felt like I was having bad luck, like 'Damn. Why me? Is God trying to tell me that this isn't for me?'' After that, Toure said he had 'a reality check.' 'I had to remember who I was,' Toure said. 'Remember you have a purpose in this life. You can't give up on your dreams. What kind of tone am I setting for my son, for my brothers, for younger kids that look up to me just to give up when things get tough? Nah. You've got to keep going. Keep pushing through hard times. You can't let anything break you.' And now Toure finds himself front and center with a prime opportunity at Miami. The Hurricanes beefed up at the position following spring practices, adding Toure and N.C. State transfer Kamal Bonner through the portal to stabilize a position led by Bissainthe and followed from there by the likes of Raul 'Popo' Aguirre, Jaylin Aldermin, Chase Smith and Bobby Pruitt. 'It's always about competition,' Hetherman said. 'Competition is going to push everyone to always get better. I think we had a very good room. I think that [the additions of Toure and Bonner] just continues to expand that room. No one's going to take anything for granted. No one's going to stay where they are now. Everyone needs to constantly step up and improve their game.' Toure certainly isn't taking this final chance for granted. He sees a chance to make an impact on a team with national championship aspirations. He knows how effective Hetherman's defense can be because he has seen it work. 'He's a guru,' Toure said of Hetherman. 'That man is smart. Even when I was at Rutgers, me and him used to meet for hours and hours and hours during the season, so it's definitely a blessing to be back with him and just be in a scheme that I'm familiar with.' Now, it's just a matter of all the pieces falling into place. Toure, Hetherman and the rest of the Hurricanes defense has a month to get that done before the season begins. 'It's all about everybody being on the same page,' Toure said. 'Literally all the best defenses in the country, you look back from years and years and years, everybody was on the same page, whether it was the ones, the twos, the threes. Everybody knew how to communicate. They knew what they were doing, and they knew their job. Everybody did their job, and everybody played fast and physical. ... We've been taking the right steps in the right direction, and we just gotta continue to use camp to build on what we've started.'

Kyle Williams looks to shatter the Patriots' WR draft curse

The New England Patriots' struggles when drafting wide receivers in recent memory have been well-documented. 2025 third-round pick Kyle Williams is hoping to flip the script and become a difference-maker for Drake Maye. Outside of New England's 2023 draft class, which featured Demario Douglas and Kayshon Boutte, there hasn't been a Patriots wide receiver to be drafted by the team and tally 500 or more yards in a season since Julian Edelman back in 2009. The lack of production hasn't come without consistent attempts to find talent, with the organization selecting a wideout in each of the last five drafts. Williams is hoping to prove he is an outlier in comparison to previous selections, quickly making a name for himself through the first week of training camp. Making flashy plays is impressive in its own right, but what has been more promising to the organization has been the rookie's work ethic and willingness to grow. As the lone rookie pass-catcher, Williams is surrounded by veterans with years of experience at the NFL level. None of the veterans has been more productive than Stefon Diggs, who is learning the ins and outs of Josh McDaniels' offense alongside the young rookie. Williams has been vocal about how Diggs has been his favorite wide receiver to watch since the 31-year-old was in college. Now the pair are playing together, both working to build a rapport with Maye, helping each other along the way. The opportunity is there for Williams to find significant playing time in his first season, with Diggs returning from his torn ACL in 2024, and some question marks throughout the rest of the wide receiver room. In his final year of college at Washington State, Williams proved he can be the number one target for an offense, totaling 1,198 yards and 14 touchdowns. Names like N'Keal Harry, Ja'Lynn Polk and Tyquan Thornton will keep Patriots fans somewhat skeptical until Williams proves he can consistently produce at the highest level, but the rookie seems to have cast a new glimmer of hope over the 2025 season in New England.
