The South African Students Congress (SASCO) has joined a growing number of voices calling for the removal of Higher Education Minister Dr. Nobuhle Nkabane, but one political analyst says she should not be fired alone while other ministers accused of corruption remain.
SASCO, which has joined parties such as the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) and the Democratic Alliance (DA), has called on President Cyril Ramaphosa to dismiss Nkabane.
Nkabane is facing mounting allegations of corruption and misleading Parliament about the process used to appoint the SETA board members - a list which was dominated by African National Congress (ANC) affiliates, including the son of Mineral Resources Minister Gwede Mantashe, Buyambo.
Addressing the media on Sunday, SASCO President Alungile Amtshe said Nkabane had failed students on multiple fronts, including by failing to appoint a National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS).
"The crisis facing students today is not incidental. It is the direct result of poor governance by the Department of Higher Education and Training and the opportunistic, malicious, and poor bourgeoisie agenda by the university and college management," Amtshe said.
'We contend that DHET, led by Minister Nobuhle Nkabane, within the government of national unity, has consistently failed to deliver on its most basic responsibilities - from the catastrophic delays in NSFAS disbursements to the flawed appointment of strategic boards meant to accelerate access to education and training.'
Amtshe also criticised the chronic underfunding of institutions that serve working-class communities and accused university managers of treating higher education as a profit-driven enterprise.
'These managements are complicit in the systemic exclusion of Black and working-class students, perpetuating a two-tier education system that serves capital, not the people,' he said.
He added that SASCO has no choice but to take a 'drastic stance' and called for Nkabane's immediate removal.
Meanwhile, political analyst Professor Bheki Mngomezulu told IOL News that calls for Nkabane's firing appear selective, pointing out that other ministers implicated in corruption allegations remain in office.
'There have been mounting calls on President Cyril Ramaphosa to fire Nkabane, but what are they saying about Human Settlements Minister Thembi Simelane? It will be unfair to focus on Nkabane while ignoring others,' Mngomezulu said.
Simelane, while mayor of Polokwane, allegedly took out a R575,600 loan from the now-defunct VBS Mutual Bank to purchase a Sandton coffee shop.
She has since denied any wrongdoing and was later moved from the Justice and Constitutional Development Ministry to Human Settlements.
Simelane also faced scrutiny for alleged inflated billing linked to a R700,000 Eskom contract, which she vehemently denied.
Another minister under fire is Khumbudzo Ntshavheni, the minister in the presidency, who was under the Hawks investigation for R2.5 million in alleged tender fraud dating back to her time in the Ba-Phalaborwa Municipality, in Limpopo.
She has not responded to the allegations. However, ANC secretary general Fikile Mbalula has defended her, saying the party would only respond when it has 'something tangible.'
The controversy intensified following public outcry in May after Nkabane recommended several politically connected individuals for the SETA boards.
In addition to Buyambo, those who were appointed included former KwaZulu-Natal Premier Dr. Nomusa Dube-Ncube, provincial transport official Siboniso Mbhele, and ANC Johannesburg Deputy Regional Secretary Loyiso Masuku.
Critics have accused Nkabane of political patronage and misleading Parliament regarding the selection process.

DA accuses ANC of double standards

JOHANNESBURG- Political drama is heating up in the Government of National Unity (GNU). The DA says the ANC is playing favourites by firing Deputy Minister, Andrew Whitfield but letting Minister Nobuhle Nkabane off the hook despite serious allegations. On Tuesday, the DA hit back by laying charges against Nkabane for allegedly spinning a web of lies about an independent panel that greenlit political appointments to SETA boards. With budget votes on the horizon, the DA is gearing up to call out corruption where they see it. Political analyst, Ntsikelelo Breakfast says the DA wants to expose how President Cyril Ramaphosa according to them was applying double standards. "On the one hand the President dismisses on of [DA's own] for not getting approval for a trip he was not ment to undertake, but on the other hand turns a blind eye to some of the members of the executive who have been at fault," he said. While Breakfast says he sympathies with the DA, he disagrees with the party on how they have responded to this matter in terms of their announcements of pulling out from the National Dialogue.

Political turmoil in MK Party as MPs demand Colleen Makhubele's removal

MK Party chief whip, Collen Makhubele faces internal backlash from the party's MPs calling for her removal. Image: X Internal divisions are brewing within the uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party caucus in Parliament, as several Members of Parliament (MPs) have called for the immediate removal of newly appointed chief whip Colleen Makhubele. Makhubele, who took office at the end of May, is accused by some MPs of making unilateral and undemocratic decisions, betraying party ideology - particularly in relation to her stance on Israel - and demonstrating poor leadership. In a letter addressed to party president Jacob Zuma, the dissenting MPs argue that her leadership threatens party unity and describe her as a 'political novice and newcomer.' The letter also states that since taking over from former chief whip Mzwanele Manyi, Makhubele's conduct has alienated members of the caucus. Makhubele, the former speaker of the City of Johannesburg, joined the MK Party in August 2024 after stints in the Congress of the People (COPE) and the short-lived South African Rainbow Alliance (SARA), which she founded. IOL News previously reported that MK Party's deputy chief whip, Muzi Ntshingila, confirmed Makhubele's appointment and expressed support from some quarters of the caucus. The announcement, which first circulated in internal party WhatsApp groups, was later confirmed by Ntshingila to IOL. 'Please be informed that Hon. Mzwanele Manyi has been relieved of his duties as chief whip with immediate effect. We thank him for his service and dedication to the MK Party and wish him the very best in his future endeavors,' read the message. 'We are pleased to announce that Hon. Colleen Makhubele has been appointed as the new chief whip of the MK Party. We are confident that she will lead with strength and vision as we continue to advance our collective mission,' it continued. Manyi, who joined the MK Party in August 2024 after defecting from the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), faced criticism from some senior party officials, who accused him of arrogance and failing to represent the caucus effectively. He fails to listen and protect his caucus and wants to shine in the media alone and not give anyone a chance,' one senior party official told IOL. Makhubele's appointment marks another leadership shake-up in the MK Party, which has been plagued by internal divisions. Just weeks ago, the party removed its former secretary-general, Floyd Shivambu, after a controversial and turbulent tenure. Shivambu, who also defected from the EFF, was accused of misconduct, including an unauthorised trip to Malawi to meet fugitive pastor Shepherd Bushiri. Although initially expected to represent the party in Parliament, his name was omitted from the final list of sworn-in MPs. Some members said Shivambu's rapid rise - from national organiser to secretary-general - was met with resistance. Despite his close ties to Zuma, his leadership was dogged by infighting, which ultimately led to his removal. Shivambu has since announced plans to start his own political party.
