Punjab: Mann calls for mass movement against drugs, corruption in state

Hindustan Times25-05-2025

Chief minister Bhagwant Mann on Sunday appealed to the people to actively participate in the fight against drugs and corruption, describing it as a battle for the future of Punjab's coming generations.
Addressing a gathering at a function organised by the Aggarwal Sabha in Nabha, the CM emphasised that public support is critical to the success of this mission.
'The state government has launched a war against the menace of drugs and corruption, but this drive can only succeed with the proactive cooperation of the people,' said Mann. He called on citizens to treat the anti-drug campaign 'Yudh Nashian Virudh' as a collective responsibility.
Mann highlighted that the state has taken strict legal actions, including the demolition of properties belonging to drug smugglers, and pledged that such operations would continue until the drug trade is completely eliminated. 'The action is being taken as per the law of the land, and its aim is to deal a fatal blow to the drug network,' he added.
The CM noted that it took over two years to develop a comprehensive strategy to combat the drug crisis. 'We broke the supply chain, arrested major drug traffickers, ensured rehabilitation for victims, and seized properties bought with drug money,' he stated.
He reassured the public of his government's commitment to transparency and inclusive growth. 'I will continue to fight for Punjab's rights till my last breath,' Mann asserted, referencing his meeting with the Prime Minister at the NITI Aayog meeting.
Kejriwal backs anti-drug campaign
Speaking at the event, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) national convener Arvind Kejriwal supported Mann's anti-drug initiatives, alleging that previous governments in Punjab had not only protected drug traffickers but also facilitated the trade using official machinery.
'Ministers in the previous governments delivered drugs door to door in their official vehicles. Drug smugglers stayed in their houses. This is on record. They completely ruined Punjab,' he said.
Traders' boards to be set up in Punjab
Kejriwal also said traders' boards will be set up at the state and district levels to give a boost to trade and commerce in Punjab. In the coming days, major investment-friendly decisions will be taken by the AAP government, he said adding that the motive is to give impetus to the Punjab industry of the state and create an environment where it can excel, he said.
Revamp of Kali Mata Mandir announced
Chief minister Mann and Kejriwal also visited Kali Mata Mandir in Patiala where they offered prayers and announced a renovation project for the historic temple.
Addressing the media after paying obeisance, they announced that the temple would undergo a complete facelift, with special focus on rejuvenating the 'sarovar' (sacred pond), which has remained dry for the past 30 years.
'The sarovar will be restored, including desilting, waterproofing, and stonework along the banks,' said Mann. 'We will also improve the surrounding pathways to enhance the experience for devotees.'
Kejriwal added that adequate resources would be allocated to ensure a timely and high-quality renovation.

AAP supremo plays Baniya's son card
Patiala: Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) national convener Arvind Kejriwal on Sunday invoked his 'Baniya's son' analogy to underline his financial expertise in managing state resources.
Addressing the Aggarwal Sabha in Nabha, he claimed that despite inheriting a debt-ridden government, the AAP government in Punjab had successfully fulfilled all its promises without ever blaming empty coffers.
'Unlike previous governments, which always complained about empty coffers, we never made excuses. When we took over, the state was under debt. I am a Baniya's son, and I know where to bring money from to run the government. In just three years, we delivered everything we promised,' said Kejriwal.
The AAP leader also pointed to Punjab's economic decline, stating that the state, once having the highest per capita income in the country, had now slipped to 17th position under previous regimes. He attributed the decline to years of misgovernance and emphasised AAP's commitment to reviving Punjab's economy.

AAP leaders counter Sirsa's claims, say he's part of the problem

Shariq Majeed Ludhiana: The Aam Aadmi Party strongly countered BJP leader Manjinder Singh Sirsa's "baseless accusations" against the Punjab government. AAP leaders Malvinder Kang and Neel Garg claimed that Sirsa had a "questionable past" and alleged rapid deterioration of governance in Delhi under the BJP's watch. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Malvinder Kang said that Sirsa played a role in corruption as OSD to Sukhbir Badal during the SAD-BJP tenure. "Everyone knows what that era was about—corruption, the proliferation of drugs, and a complete collapse of governance," Kang said. Referring to registration of an FIR filed by Delhi Police's Economic Offences Wing in 2021, he said, "When the law started catching up, Sirsa didn't turn to BJP out of ideology; he joined them to save himself from jail," Kang claimed. Neel Garg criticised Sirsa's role as cabinet minister in Delhi, highlighting the "glaring failures" of the BJP government in just a few months. He pointed out the "severe water crisis" brought about by the resurgence" of the tanker mafia, daily power cuts and skyrocketing private school fees imposing unbearable burden on parents. Garg also talked about the closure of mohalla clinics due to staff shortage, removal of bus marshals, compromising women's safety, and delayed pensions leaving widows and senior citizens in distress. "These failures reflect the BJP's inability to govern and their dismantling of the systems AAP painstakingly built to serve the people," Garg alleged. "The BJP has dismantled everything AAP built in Delhi. People of Delhi are already regretting their decision and are openly saying, 'We made a mistake, we want AAP back,'" Garg claimed. Garg also questioned Sirsa's connection with Punjab, describing him as an opportunist from Haryana, meddling in Punjab's politics. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now "When Sirsa was OSD to Sukhbir Badal, he enjoyed Punjab's resources and salaries. Now, he points fingers at the same state he exploited," Garg alleged. Reiterating their commitment to transforming the state, Garg said, "Unlike Sirsa and the BJP, we worked tirelessly to bring change—revamping schools, providing free medicines in hospitals, giving jobs without bribes or recommendations, and taking a tough stand against drug mafia," said Garg. He also defended the land pooling policy of the state government, describing it as a game changer for farmers, ensuring their consent and offering fair compensation along with a stake in future profits. Number of Cong leaders, workers, social activists join AAP

Ludhiana: A number of Congress leaders, workers and social activists joined the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), alongwith their supporters, AAP claimed on Saturday. Punjab AAP working president Amansher Singh Shery Kalsi and cabinet minister Mohinder Bhagat formally inducted the new entrants in the presence of party leader Sunny Ahluwalia and local leaders. According to AAP, Sham Lal Bhagat, Congress vice-president from Ward 72, joined the party. Along with him, his associates Devraj Bhagat, Ashwini Bhagat, Ram Bhagat, Jagdish Bhagat, Ravi Bhagat, Vishambhar Bhagat, Rajinder Rinku, Rajkumar Bhagat, Rohit Bhagat, Aman Bhagat, Vasudev Bhagat, and Kishan Bhagat also joined the party. AAP sources said that Ramesh Bhagat is a leader of the Bhagat community and national president of Shivraj Sena. He was accompanied by his associates Ravi Bhagat, Kishan Lal Bhagat, Babbu Bhagat, Madan Chahal, Keval Kishan, Arun Jogi, Mohit Bhagat, Shivchand, Sunil Bhagat, Mohit Bhagat, and Manjeet Kumar. "Several young leaders and social activists from the city also became part of the AAP family. Notable names include Pankaj Mehta, Piyush Sharma, Harjit Arora, Parminder Singh, Sanjeev Aggarwal, Ketan Aggarwal, Honey Singh Bohat, Sherry Singh Bohat, Suresh Birla, Vicky Eklavya, Vikas, Akshay, Vishal Gopal, Shubham, Sunny Gehlot, Ravi, Rohit Atwal, and Tushar Gaurav," the party said. Addressing mediapersons, Shery Kalsi welcomed the new leaders and said, "Leaders from various parties are continuously joining the Aam Aadmi Party. They are influenced by its policies and work. The massive number of people joining us today will undoubtedly strengthen us in the bypoll." He added that under the leadership of chief minister Bhagwant Mann, the AAP government was providing 300 units of free electricity to all households every month without any discrimination. "Moreover, substantial reforms are being made in the education and healthcare sectors. Seeing these revolutionary works of the AAP government, opposition parties are scared," he maintained. Kalsi said that the BJP and Congress have no agenda, therefore, they engage in lower-level and manipulative politics. He accused the BJP of openly supporting Congress. "Both are working hand in hand because they don't want a third party to emerge in Punjab politics," he said. Cabinet minister Mohinder Bhagat described chief minister Bhagwant Mann as the "messiah of the poor." "He has done historic work for the poor, Dalits, and marginalised in the last three years. This is why Punjab's poor and backward communities stand firmly with the Aam Aadmi Party," he said. AAP's Punjab general secretary Sunny Ahluwalia took a jibe at the Congress, saying that its leaders kept fighting among themselves. "Their candidate, Bharat Bhushan Ashu is so arrogant that he doesn't even respect the local MP or his own party's state president, Raja Warring. Last time, people defeated him for his arrogance. This time, too, people will teach him a lesson," he claimed. MSID:: 121694620 413 |

Beware of Delhi's ‘lootera gang,' warns Manjinder Singh Sirsa

Ludhiana: Delhi environment minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa reached Ludhiana on Saturday to campaign for BJP candidate Jiwan Gupta. Addressing a press conference at the BJP election office on Ferozepur Road, Sirsa warned voters against the "lootera gang rejected by people of Delhi. " He claimed that after looting Delhi, they were eyeing Punjab and added that if the BJP got a chance to represent the West constituency, both the Centre and Delhi governments would work for betterment of the city in the next 1.5 years. Sirsa claimed that Aam Aadmi Party convener Arvind Kejriwal, when rejected by people of Delhi in the election, did not stand with them for a single day and reached Punjab instead because he was addicted to power. He claimed that Kejriwal would implement the liquor policy implemented in Delhi in Punjab too. Sirsa said, "Kejriwal is working on an American policy. Like America destroyed countries like Iraq, Afghanistan, and Libya in the name of development, Kejriwal has done it with Delhi, and now it is being done in Punjab." He added that like the liquor mafia, the land mafia had also come to Punjab from Delhi, with the state government planning to acquire nearly 25,000 acres of land in villages of the state. Saying that he came to Ludhiana to highlight the modus operandi of Kejriwal and his team. Sirsa said, "This looters' gang has three ways. In Delhi, they first announced that they would end the problem of paddy straw with some chemical, even though there is no issue of paddy straw in Delhi. They purchased a Rs 28 lakh compound and spent Rs 32 crore on advertisement. Then they paid Rs 83 lakh to SC children in the form of scholarships and spent Rs 50 crore on the promotion of this scheme. The Delhi government also started the odd-even scheme. While the government has no role in the same, it still spent Rs 55 crore in Delhi on just advertisements," Sirsa said, adding that now, money from Punjab was being drained out by the AAP government in other states as well. Sirsa said that while AAP "damaged" Delhi, the BJP gave a chance to three Sikh faces. Hailing the Union government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, he said that the government had reduced the number of people living below poverty line to 75.24 million from 344.47 million. He also observed that states governed by the BJP were more developed than Punjab. Soliciting votes for Jiwan Gupta, Sirsa urged residents to give him a chance and ensure development of the constituency. Attacking AAP again, he said that the party had only intensified the drug menace instead of curbing it. Drugs are even being peddled in schools, he claimed. Meanwhile, Jagpal Singh Nambderdar, booth in-charge of Aam Aadmi Party, Satpal Singh Khalsa, vice- president of AAP rural SC Morcha, Janak Raj, booth in-charge, Raj Kumar, ex-block president of AAP rural, Bhupinder Kumar, and Kanwardeep Singh joined BJP in the presence of Manjinder Singh Sirsa. BJP leaders like Anil Sarin, BJP state general secretary, district president Rajnish Dhiman, Parminder Singh Brar, Gurdev Sharma Debi, etc., attended the press conference. MSID:: 121693518 413 |
