Newton Aycliffe girl, 9, writes book to help children with grief

BBC News16-06-2025
A nine-year-old girl has written a book to "help other young children cope with grief" after her dad died in a superbike race.Daisy Blu Mathison, from Newton Aycliffe in County Durham, was three years old when her dad Daley died in the opening race of the Isle of Man TT in 2019.Daisy & Hugsy - The Missing Star tells the story of a magical bear who learns to navigate life after his best friend - a wise old star - disappears from the sky.Daisy and her mum Natalie want the book to provide comfort to other children dealing with losing someone they love.
Mrs Mathison said when Daisy was growing up she felt like she was on her own a lot because "she was the only child that had lost somebody"."And then she got a little older and realised that she wasn't alone and saw it happen to other children," Mrs Mathison said."That kind of inspired her to say, 'right mam, can we actually make it a reality and shine a bit of a light on other people's darkness?'"
The idea began as a drawing by Daisy of a cuddly bear with a glowing heart and has now developed into a self-published book.Mrs Mathison said her husband would be "really proud" of their daughter's work, helping to brighten up other children's lives.Daisy thinks her dad would be first in line to buy a copy."If he could, I feel like he would have got one," she said.

Liverpool ‘in pole position to land Marc Guehi as Chelsea prioritise other transfer targets'

LIVERPOOL are the front-runners to sign Marc Guehi if he leaves Crystal Palace this summer. Chelsea were also keeping tabs on Guehi but have set their sights on prioritising other transfer targets. The England centre-back has a year left on his contract and Liverpool value the defender at £40-million. Blues boss Enzo Maresca revealed the club 'are trying also to find different solutions' after Levi Colwill's ACL injury but Guehi is not being considered as a potential replacement. Newcastle had three bids for Guehi rejected last year, while Tottenham saw a £70m offer turned down in January - months before the Eagles won the FA Cup. Liverpool were believed to be leading the race to sign Guehi this summer as part of their major spending spree to bolster their defence, particularly with Real Madrid sniffing around Ibrahima Konate. Palace manager Oliver Glasner also has a year left on his contract and on the eve of the FA Cup final said: 'Marc and me, we have the same fate, but I can't speak on behalf of Marc.' Arne Slot's side will face Guehi and co in the Community Shield at Wembley on Sunday. Guehi is still on the five-year deal he signed when joining from Chelsea in 2021, ignoring new contracts and waiting for the right step up, which could be now to Anfield. Palace are not interested in swaps, despite the Kop's highly-rated Ben Doak, 19, and others being potentially available, as they need the cash to land replacements.

St Mirren 0-0 Motherwell: What Robinson said

St Mirren manager Stephen Robinson tells BBC Scotland: "It was a poor game overall. We certainly weren't at our best today. "Motherwell passed the ball around a lot in their own half of the pitch without really getting anywhere and I take responsibility for it."We overthought the press a little bit and they were expecting us to press with real positivity and I don't think we did. But I take the blame for that. We probably complicated it a little bit. On the ball, as a group, we can be a lot better."But we still had the best chances of the game and arguably should win the game. There's improvement all round. Keanu Baccus was excellent. I thought Miguel Freckleton was excellent as well. Some good performances and others that can be a lot better, which they know."We knew they'd play a lot at the back. I imagine they expected us to press them more aggressively than what we did and, as I say, I take full responsibility for that. I may have complicated that a little bit more than we needed to, instead of just pressing in a straight line. We'd spoken about that at half-time. It was better in the second half."We took the ball off them on lots of occasions, high up the pitch, but we didn't take advantage of that press, unfortunately, and probably a draw is a fair result in the outcome."Even though we didn't play well, there was half-chances, there was decent chances. Our decision-making as a group has to be better and will be better."We're a more creative team than what we showed and players will play better than what they showed today. We know that. But, all in all, we take a point."
