Uttarakhand: 2 dead, 3 injured as debris falls near Junglechatti on Kedarnath trek

Rudraprayag (Uttarakhand) [India], June 18 (ANI): Two people died and three were injured after debris fell from a hill near Janglechatti on the Kedarnath trek route around 11:20 AM on Wednesday, Uttarakhand Police said.
Police and District Disaster Relief Force (DDRF) teams quickly reached the spot, rescued the injured, and took them to Gaurikund for treatment.
In a post on X, Uttarakhand Police shared, 'Today at 11:20 AM some travellers and dandi/kandi carriers were hit by the debris that fell from the hill near Jangalchatti.'

'SDRF and police immediately rescued 3 injured and sent them to Gaurikund. 2 passengers confirmed dead. Identity to be determined. Traffic on the travel route continues under police surveillance,' the post reads.
The identity of the deceased is yet to be confirmed, and the route is now under police watch.

DRI seizes leopard skins and bones, arrests one trafficker
New Delhi [India], June 18 (ANI): In a continued effort to combat wildlife crimes, the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) executed an operation on June 16, successfully obstructing the trafficking of leopard parts. Acting on credible intelligence, the two suspect persons were intercepted on a highway near Titajuri village on the outskirts of Nagaon, Assam, and two leopard skins and 20 bones of leopard (weighing 2.58 kgs) were recovered from their possession, according to a release. During the chaotic situation, one of the suspects took advantage of the crowd and managed to escape into a nearby forest. The confiscated leopard skins and bones, along with the apprehended individual, were handed over to the Kathiatoli Forest Range for further action. The leopard (Panthera Pardus) is listed in Schedule I of the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972, providing the highest level of protection for endangered species. Hunting of leopards, and possession and trading of their parts are illegal. The leopard is also listed in Appendix I of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Flora and Fauna (CITES), thereby banning commercial trade of its parts. The battle against poaching, hunting, smuggling, trafficking and illegal trade of protected species of animals and plants is an ongoing effort of the law enforcement agencies. Besides the present seizure, since January 2025, DRI and Customs in the North Eastern Region have also seized one tiger skin and tiger bones weighing 14 kilograms, two elephant tusks, three kilograms of ambergris (vomit of sperm whale), four leopard skins, two otter skins, one skin of bear head, two kilograms of pangolin scales and eight kilograms of leopard bones. These animals are protected under the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972, making their hunting prohibited and trading and possession of their parts also prohibited. (ANI)

CBI registers corruption case against former ONGC officials, others over fake bills worth Rs 45 lakh
New Delhi [India], June 18 (ANI): The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has registered a case against 10 accused including the then DGM (MS) and a Contractual Medical Officer (Occupational Health) of ONGC, Jorhat and Proprietors of 8 private medical shops on the allegation that accused public servants entered into criminal conspiracy with owners of private empanelled medical shops and unknown persons during 2019 to 2022, the agency said in a statement. According to CBI, it was alleged that the proprietors of 8 empanelled medical shops claimed false and bogus bills of Rs 45 lakhs raised on the basis of fake requisition slips for the issuance of medicines without the knowledge of beneficiaries of ONGC and their dependents. Searches were conducted in the different residential premises of all the above accused persons which led to recovery to some incriminating documents, CBI said. Investigation is underway. (ANI)

"CM should resign on moral grounds": Congress MP on gangrape of 20-yr-old woman in Odisha
New Delhi [India], June 18 (ANI): Days after the alleged gangrape of a 20-year-old woman at the Gopalpur beach in Odisha's Ganjam district, Congress MP Saptagiri Ulaka on Wednesday demanded the resignation of Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on 'moral grounds'. He also alleged that the State is witnessing an increase in crimes against women over the last year. Ulaka told ANI, 'It is a very sad and tragic a heinous crime, how dare they do something like this in Gopalpur? This is because over the last year, the atrocities against women have increased. We have been demanding continuously to take action. We wanted to form a House Committee. I have raised this in Parliament that around 50,000 women are missing. Multiple brutal rapes are happening all over the state' He further alleged that the BJP-led government is not taking any action to prevent crimes against women in the State. 'Because the Government is not taking any steps and nothing is happening, the perpetrators have the courage to do such activities. I think the CM should be held accountable for this because he is also the Home Minister. So, on moral grounds, ideally, the CM should resign. But we have seen that the BJP government never takes accountability.' 'If there is any shame left, the CM should resign immediately. This is our demand. Women's Commission has also taken suo motu cognisance. But this is not enough, someone has to take accountability and ensure that women and girls in the state are safe.' Earlier on the day, Congress leaders and workers enter into a scuffle with police on Wednesday as they protested against the recent Gopalpur beach gang rape case. The protesters, demanding the resignation of the Chief Minister, were marching towards the CM's residence when they were stopped by the police. The police detained several Congress leaders and workers during the protest. The horrific gang-rape of a 20-year-old college student at the Gopalpur beach in Odisha's Ganjam district sparked a row with the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) calling it a 'complete breakdown' of law and order. The police have nabbed 10 people - six adults and four juveniles - in connection with the gang rape of the 20-year-old-college student from Berhampur, who was out with her male friend in the Gopalpur beach on Monday. According to the police, around 8 pm, 10 local youths, six adults and four minors at the beach overpowered the woman and her male friend. Three of the accused allegedly raped the woman while others kept watch on her male friend. The police immediately launched an investigation after the woman and her male friend registered a police complaint at the police station after 10 pm. 'After 10 pm, the woman and man came to the police station. As soon as the police reported the incident, they formed a team, and seven suspects were detained for questioning. The rest of three accused were also detained. All 10 accused - six adults and four minors - the adults have been arrested, the minors have been produced before the Juvenile Justice Board. Pleas will be sent to the Juvenile Justice Board to treat minors as adults, as they are above 16. They are all 17 years old,' Berhampur SP said. Odisha CM Mohan Charan Majhi expressed deep condemnation of the heinous gang rape incident in Gopalpur, stating that strict and exemplary action will be taken against the perpetrators. (ANI)
