
150 restaurants closed in first quarter of 2025 due to business costs, survey shows
The Restaurants Association of Ireland (RAI) unveiled the findings of its Cost of Doing Business 2025 survey, highlighting the mounting financial pressures facing restaurants and hospitality businesses across the country.
With over 170 business owners participating, the results offer a sobering snapshot of an industry grappling with rising costs, shrinking margins, and growing uncertainty about the future, RAI said.

The pressure on the sector continues to result in closures, with 150 restaurants, cafés, gastropubs and food businesses shutting their doors in the first three months of 2025 alone.
RAI said these figures underline a deepening crisis and reinforce the urgent need for meaningful support.
65 per cent of respondents reported a decline in financial performance in 2024 compared to the previous year.
Business owners identified wage increases and escalating operating costs as the most pressing challenges. The impact of these pressures is already being felt, with many restaurants forced to reduce staff, raise menu prices and seriously question their long-term viability.

The survey reveals that payroll costs now account for nearly 39 per cent of turnover, a significant increase from just under 32 per cent in 2022.
Food costs and wages
Food costs have also surged, rising from 28 per cent to over 34 per cent of turnover, while insurance and utility bills have climbed by 32.89 per cent and 25.81 per cent, respectively, over the same period.
Employment trends reflect the strain, with full-time staff levels dropping by 10 per cent and part-time roles by seven per cent since 2022.
Wage increases between 2022 and 2025 have been particularly steep with minimum wage increasing by over 28 per cent. Meanwhile, menu prices have not kept pace with soaring input costs, increasing by just 16.92 per cent for lunch and 18.75 per cent for dinner.

The cost of ingredients and energy has also seen dramatic inflation. Between 2022 and 2025, the price of fruit and vegetables rose by nearly 50 per cent, beef by 96 per cent, and chocolate by a staggering 157 per cent, RAI said.
At the same time, gas costs increased by over 58 per cent per kilowatt-hour, and electricity by more than 96 per cent.
Looking ahead, 94 per cent of businesses expect food costs to continue rising in 2025, while 88 per cent foresee increases in beverage prices.
Four in five restaurants anticipate cutting staff hours due to wage inflation and increased costs, while 70 per cent expect to reduce overall staff numbers.

Commenting on the findings, Restaurants Association of Ireland chief executive, Adrian Cummins, said: "These findings are a glaring red alert for the Government and every politician in the country. The food-led hospitality sector is under relentless financial pressure and the consequences are playing out in real time.
"Without immediate and meaningful supports which include cost containment measures I can guarantee the pace of closures and job losses will continue in every town, city and village across Ireland.

The bargain retailer has pulled the plug on five stores in the last couple of weeks. 1 This comes after a further 200 loss-making stores were identified as possible closures. Poundland revenues dropped by 6.5% to 985 million euros (£830 million) for the six months to March, compared with a year earlier. RETAIL PAIN IN 2025 The British Retail Consortium has predicted that the Treasury's hike to employer NICs will cost the retail sector £2.3billion. Research by the British Chambers of Commerce shows that more than half of companies plan to raise prices by early April. A survey of more than 4,800 firms found that 55% expect prices to increase in the next three months, up from 39% in a similar poll conducted in the latter half of 2024. Three-quarters of companies cited the cost of employing people as their primary financial pressure. The Centre for Retail Research (CRR) has also warned that around 17,350 retail sites are expected to shut down this year. It comes on the back of a tough 2024 when 13,000 shops closed their doors for good, already a 28% increase on the previous year. Professor Joshua Bamfield, director of the CRR said: "The results for 2024 show that although the outcomes for store closures overall were not as poor as in either 2020 or 2022, they are still disconcerting, with worse set to come in 2025." Professor Bamfield has also warned of a bleak outlook for 2025, predicting that as many as 202,000 jobs could be lost in the sector. "By increasing both the costs of running stores and the costs on each consumer's household it is highly likely that we will see retail job losses eclipse the height of the pandemic in 2020."

Macy's is opening a new store in a surprising location amid hundreds of closures
Macy's has unveiled plans for a surprising new location amid a dramatic spree of closures. The new store will open in the Midway Crossings mall west of Miami, the mall's property management company revealed. It is a surprising choice for the struggling retailer which has previously expressed plans to move away from malls and invest further in to its luxury Bloomingdale's brand. The 55-year-old Florida mall is located off the busy Palmetto Expressway. The new Macy's store will be housed alongside brands such as Marshall's, Costco and Five Below. A representative for the mall's property management company Sterling Organization confirmed the upcoming Macy's opening to the Miami Herald. Although a lease is in place, the location does not yet have an opening date, the outlet reported. 'We're not able to comment on any specific plans at this time,' Macy's said in a separate statement. According to Sterling Organization's plans, the new Macy's will be around 31,000 square feet, making it one of the larger stores in the mall. The shopping center was first opened in 1970 as 'Midway Mall,' and was established to serve the rural community living around six miles away from Dadeland, according to the Herald. After several incarnations it was renamed Midway Crossing in 2022 as part of a revitalization campaign. Macy's is currently in the process of closing 66 stores across 23 states by the end of the year. Among the closures was its enormous location inside Sunrise Mall in Massapequa, Long Island, which had been there for more than 50 years. The Macy's at Center City in Philadelphia was also closed for good in March. By 2026, there will be just 350 Macy's stores, the 166-year-old company announced in February 2024. 'We are closing underproductive Macy's stores to allow us to focus our resources in our go–forward stores,' Tony Spring, chairman and chief executive officer of Macy's said at the time. As well as revamping remaining stores, Macy's also plans to expand its footprint with 15 new Bloomingdale's and 30 new Bluemercury locations. The major turnaround comes as the department store tries to win back shoppers, amid growing pressure from online rivals. It is also trying to cut costs by culling stores in malls and downtown districts which experts say have been 'left to rot.' 'The plans are about correcting what has gone wrong at Macy's, and the biggest things that have gone wrong at Macy's are the quality of the stores and the product assortment, Neil Saunders, an analyst at Global Data Retail, previously told 'And so over the years customers have deserted it, sales have tumbled and store productivity has gone down. All the metrics have gone in the wrong direction.' The company is closing down stores that are not working and investing in the locations that it wants to keep, he added, in order to put the business on a much better footing. 'But of course, turning around something that has been left to rot for many years isn't easy, it isn't cheap, and it isn't quick,' Saunders said.

Nationwide 82-year-old chain to shutter final stores in weeks… but not before a huge closing down sale
Joann is closing for good after 82 years — and everything must go. The once-popular craft retailer confirmed it will shutter all remaining stores in the coming weeks. It will wrap up its nationwide going-out-of-business sales that offer shoppers up to 90 percent off. Joann's demise has come fast. It filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in January in the hope of restructuring and keeping the business afloat. But just a month later bosses said would Joann would close all its 800 stores. After shutting 255 in April, the rest will go this month. Until 2018, it was known as Jo-Ann Stores but rebranded as 'Joann' to move beyond fabrics to embrace a wider range of crafts. Fans of Joann were furious to learn the chain canceled gift cards on February 28. Joann is the latest retailer to face challenges after experiencing a pandemic-era sales boom. With Americans now returning to work, the surge in home crafting has significantly declined. Joann's closures come after a widespread 'retail apocalypse' last year saw major companies file for bankruptcy and brick-and-mortar stores close in their droves. Up until mid-December, US retailers have shut 7,300 stores - up nearly 60 percent from 2023. The most recent big retail bankruptcy was Container Store, which filed for Chapter 11 protection on December 22. There has been no news yet on its The store - known for its home organizational goods, including closet organizers and storage bins - has been around for 46 years. Despite receiving a boost from Marie Kondo's hit Netflix show 'Tidying Up' during the Covid-19 pandemic, the chain has been weighed down by mounting losses in recent years. Joann specialized in fabrics and arts and crafts supplies, and its major competitors included Michaels and Hobby Lobby. It first filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in March last year after pandemic-era sales growth faded, leaving the retailer with $1.2 billion in debt. It emerged from bankruptcy the next month - with 815 stores across 49 states - after creditors agreed to cancel $505 million in debt in exchange for ownership of the company. Unfortunately, it was not enough for the chain to make a financial comeback. The retailer had $615.7 million in debt before its second filing and later sold all its assets to the GA Group and various lenders. Now that Joann has bitten the dust, so will the jobs of nearly 20,000 employees. Burlington is using Joann's unfortunate demise as an opportunity for store expansion. The department store retailer confirmed it would begin transitioning 45 Joann locations into Burlington stores in May and June. Some locations will be in California, Texas, and Joann's home state of Ohio. Despite Joann's failure, Michaels is continuing its reign of being the North America's largest provider of arts and crafts and currently operates over 1,200 stores. Hobby Lobby is thriving after opening several stores this year, one being in Arizona last week. As of now, Michaels and Hobby Lobby have never filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.
