Dow Jones falls while Nasdaq rises on Nvidia boost
The Dow fell by 313 points, or 0.5%, weighed down by inflation concerns and underwhelming bank earnings. Meanwhile, the Nasdaq gained 0.5%, lifted by a more than 4% rise in Nvidia shares after the chipmaker announced that it hopes to resume sales of its H20 GPUs to China soon. The S&P 500 edged down 0.1%, despite touching a new record high earlier in the session.
New inflation numbers for June were released, showing a monthly rise of 0.3%, which puts annual inflation at 2.7%, in line with expectations. However, this was still an uptick compared to May. Core inflation, which excludes food and energy prices, rose 0.2% from the previous month and 2.9% from the year before. Experts say while the numbers met forecasts, they still reflect a slight heat-up in inflation, possibly due to tariffs that haven't fully shown up in the data yet.
Big banks reported earnings, but most of the results disappointed investors. Wells Fargo beat expectations but lowered its outlook for interest income, sending its stock down over 4%. JPMorgan also posted better-than-expected numbers, but its shares slipped slightly. BlackRock tumbled more than 6% after missing on revenue. Citigroup was the exception, with its stock rising about 1% after beating estimates.
Despite the weak bank results, Wall Street is cautiously hopeful that the overall second-quarter earnings season will help keep the stock market near its record highs. Analysts predict the S&P 500 will show earnings growth of about 4.3% compared to last year, not huge, but still positive.
One technical signal from the S&P 500 is raising eyebrows. The index has stayed above its 20-day moving average for 55 days straight, the longest stretch since early 2021. Analysts at BTIG say this kind of streak is usually bullish in the long run, but it could mean a short-term pullback is coming. They expect some market choppiness as we move into late July and August.
In individual stock news, MP Materials soared over 25% after landing a $500 million deal with Apple to supply rare earth magnets made from recycled materials. The magnets will be produced at MP's plant in Fort Worth, Texas. This follows another recent boost for MP when the Pentagon took an equity stake in the company, sending its stock up nearly 50% last week.
Meanwhile, former President Donald Trump chimed in on the inflation report, using it as an opportunity to once again call on the Federal Reserve to cut interest rates. He argued on his Truth Social platform that rates should be cut by 3 full percentage points to save the U.S. economy money and support growth. His comments came after the June CPI report showed moderate price increases that, while not alarming, were higher than the previous month.
All in all, it was a day of mixed messages for the markets, with solid tech performance offset by concerns about inflation, rate policy, and bank earnings.

Trump suggests Fed renovations could be fireable offense for Powell
President Donald Trump suggested that a $2.5 billion renovation plan at the Federal Reserve might be sufficient cause to fire Fed Chair Jerome Powell, an escalation of his recent attacks against the central banker. 'I think he's terrible… But the one thing I didn't see him as a guy that needed a palace to live in,' Trump told reporters. He said talking to Powell was like 'talking to a chair' because of a lack of personality. 'But the one thing I would have never guessed is that he would be spending two and a half billion dollars to build a little extension onto the Fed,' Trump said. A reporter asked if that was a fireable offense. 'I think it sort of is,' Trump said. Trump has railed against Powell for months, demanding lower interest rates. But Fed officials have held rates steady this year, much to Trump's ire. Nevertheless, the attacks have raised concerns that the data-dependent Fed could see its independence eroded. Markets favor independent central banks – monetary authorities that set interest rates based on data and clear mandates, rather than political considerations potentially pushed by elected officials. 'The independence of the Fed is absolutely critical, and not just for the current Fed chairman, who I respect, but for the next Fed chairman,' JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon, one of the most prominent Wall Street leaders, told reporters in a conference call earlier on Tuesday. 'Playing around with the Fed can often have adverse consequences, absolutely opposite of what you might be hoping for,' he continued. Trump has admitted that his more personal attacks and pressure campaigns against Powell haven't given him the lower interest rates he wants. The renovations have come up as a more recent line of attack against the Fed chair. Powell has asked the central bank's inspector general to conduct an additional review of the ongoing renovation, CNN previously reported. Last month, some Senate lawmakers grilled Powell over what they depicted as lavish upgrades to its DC headquarters at Powell's semiannual monetary policy hearing. The Fed's renovation project was approved by its board in 2017 and originally cost $1.9 billion in 2019. Construction began in 2021, but the cost swelled to $2.5 billion because of 'unforeseen conditions' requiring more spending to rectify, such as 'more asbestos than anticipated, toxic contamination in soil, and a higher-than-expected water table,' according to the Fed's website. Trump has long directed his frustrations at Powell, calling him everything from a 'numbskull' to a 'moron.' Powell has publicly said that if it weren't for the tariffs, the Fed would have already lowered rates this year by now and that Fed officials are waiting to see the impact of those tariffs before deciding to lower rates. Trump disagrees. 'We should be at 1%,' Trump said at a luncheon event on Monday. 'We should be less than 1%.' CNN's John Towfighi contributed to this report. Trump says Vietnam trade deal is 'pretty well set'
By Andrea Shalal WASHINGTON (Reuters) -U.S. President Donald Trump said on Tuesday that a trade agreement with Vietnam was nearly complete. Trump told reporters at Joint Base Andrews near Washington that he could release details of the Vietnam trade agreement, but did not think it was necessary. The U.S. president announced earlier this month that he had struck a preliminary trade deal with the Communist country, which would cut planned U.S. tariffs on imports from Vietnam to 20% from the 46% level he had threatened in April. At the time, Trump also said goods that Washington deemed to be illegally transshipped through Vietnam to other countries would be subject to a 40% levy. The agreement has not been finalized and details have not been released, leaving questions over how Washington will define an illegal transshipment and how much value Vietnam must add to imported products to avoid the 40% tariff. It also remains unclear which products would fall under Trump's 20% tariff. Vietnam has not confirmed the specific tariff rates, celebrating what it described as an agreement on a joint statement about a trade framework. Asked if he planned to release details of the trade pact with Vietnam, Trump told reporters, "Well, I might. I don't think it matters how much you release of the deal. We have a Vietnam deal, and I would say that that deal is being pretty well set." Vietnam has nearly tripled its exports to the United States since the start of the U.S.-China trade war in 2018, when the first Trump administration imposed wide-ranging tariffs on Beijing, pushing some manufacturers to move production south. At the same time, Vietnam vastly expanded imports from China, with their inflow almost exactly matching the value and swings of exports to the United States, each totalling around $140 billion in 2024, data from the U.S. and Vietnam show.
