Old Friends, New Goals: Messi joins Suarez in Uruguayan club venture
From their glory days at Barcelona to reuniting at Inter Miami, Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez have now brought their enduring partnership into a new chapter, co-founding Deportivo LSM, a club set to compete in professional Uruguayan football.
Formerly known as Deportivo LS, the club was founded by Suarez in 2018 in Uruguay's Ciudad de la Costa with a focus on developing local talent and giving back to the community through job opportunities and social initiatives.
On Tuesday, Suarez announced the rebranding of his club, adding an 'M' in honour of the Argentine captain, who has officially joined the project as a partner.
The team are now set to take their next step by entering professional competition in the Uruguayan fourth division.
'Deportivo LS, a family project, is a family dream that started in 2018. We have grown a lot with more than three thousand members and infrastructure,' Suarez said in a video on his Instagram account.

'That's why I made the decision for Deportivo LS to be part of the AUF (Uruguayan FA) structure, both at youth and professional level.
'This project is the perfect place to continue sharing our vision of football. So I invited my friend to join Deportivo LSM's professional project,' added the 38-year-old striker, referring to Messi.
According to media reports, the South American pair will jointly oversee operations while appointing a sports manager with experience in the local football scene.
'I would like to thank Luis for giving me this opportunity and share this project that he has been working on for many years and which has grown so much,' the 37-year-old Messi said.
'I hope to contribute as much as I can to continue growing and to be here alongside you.'
Uruguay's top scorer Suarez became Messi's close partner on the pitch at Barcelona from 2014 to 2020, forming one of the most prolific attacking duos in modern football.
In six seasons, they won 13 major titles together including the Champions League, four LaLiga crowns and four Copa del Rey trophies while also forging a strong personal friendship off the pitch.
Their bond continued in 2023 when Suarez joined Messi at Inter Miami. Alongside former Barca teammates Jordi Alba and Sergio Busquets, the pair led the MLS club to the 2024 Supporters' Shield.

Inter coach Inzaghi delays talk about future after ‘bitter' defeat
MUNICH: Inter Milan coach Simone Inzaghi said there was 'too much disappointment and bitterness' to make a call on his future after Saturday's 5-0 Champions League thumping by Paris Saint-Germain. PSG were utterly dominant against the Italians, winning their first Champions League trophy by the biggest margin in the history of the competition. Inzaghi, who has been linked with an Inter exit, said discussions about his future – and that of the club – would need to take place another time. 'There will be time to talk about it calmly with the club,' the coach told reporters, adding 'it's not the right time… It's awkward to talk about my future now.' On track to repeat the treble heroics of 2010 just a few weeks ago, Inter end the season trophyless after falling away in each competition. Booted out of the Italian Cup semi-finals by bitter rivals AC Milan, Inter fell behind Napoli in Serie A and end the season empty handed. Inzaghi took over Inter in 2021 and has a contract until 2026. The 49-year-old has taken the side to one Serie A title and two Italian Cups, but Inter have now lost two Champions League finals in the past three seasons. Inter had made it past the Dutch, German and Spanish champions to reach the final, but could barely lay a finger on the French champions in Munich. Wild celebrations in Paris after PSG's Champions League win The coach said 'the club is strong, the club supports us,' but lamented 'as it was two years ago, we failed to win the most important match'. With the average age of Inter's starting XI just over 30 – six years older than that of PSG – Inzaghi will need to oversee a rebuild, if he elects to stay on. Inzaghi said his side showed tiredness in the final, having 'played 58 or 59 games since last July'. Inter midfielder Nicolo Barella agreed, but said 'fatigue is not an excuse in a final. 'The impression is that they wanted it more and this is the biggest disappointment. Heart is much more important than tactics and today it was missing'. Inter goalkeeper Yann Sommer said his side were 'unbelievably disappointed'. It was a 'tough night, we didn't perform well,' he added. 'What we prepared all week, we didn't manage to bring it onto the pitch. 'We need to swallow it. It hurts a lot. It was a big opportunity to win a huge title.'

Wild celebrations in Paris after PSG's Champions League win
PARIS: Thousands of Paris Saint-Germain supporters took to the streets of the French capital on Saturday to celebrate their club's victory in the Champions League final, but nearly 300 arrests were made after some clashes with police. The majority of fans celebrated peacefully, but Paris police said scuffles broke out near the city's Champs-Elysees avenue and PSG's Parc des Princes stadium, where 48,000 had watched the 5-0 win against Inter Milan in Munich on big screens. Most of the nearly 300 people detained were suspected of possessing fireworks and causing disorder, Paris police said. AFP journalists saw police use a water cannon to stop a crowd reaching the Arc de Triomphe. 'Troublemakers on the Champs-Elysees were looking to create incidents and repeatedly came into contact with police by throwing large fireworks and other objects,' police said in a statement. Outside Paris, police said a car careered into fans celebrating PSG's win in Grenoble in southeastern France, leaving four people injured, two of them seriously. All of those hurt were from the same family, police said. The driver handed himself in to the police and was placed under arrest. A source close to the investigation said it was believed the driver had not acted intentionally. In Paris, most fans showed their joy by singing and dancing in the streets, with cars sounding their horns, after their team won the biggest prize in European club football for the first time in their history. One 20-year-old PSG supporter, Clement, said: 'It's so good and so deserved! We have a song that talks about our struggles and it hasn't always been easy. Lionel Messi double as Miami hit five past Columbus 'But we got our faith back this year with a team without stars. They're 11 guys who play for each other.' French President Emmanuel Macron's office said he would host the victorious players on Sunday to congratulate them. In a separate message on X, Macron hailed a 'day of glory for PSG'. 'Bravo, we are all proud,' he wrote. 'Paris is the capital of Europe tonight.' Paris mayor Anne Hidalgo hailed it as a 'historic' win. The PSG team will hold a victory parade on the Champs-Elysees on Sunday when tens of thousands of supporters are expected to gather to get a glimpse of their returning heroes.

Lionel Messi double as Miami hit five past Columbus
FORT LAUDERDALE: Lionel Messi scored twice and created two more as Inter Miami warmed up for the Club World Cup in style with a 5-1 win over the Columbus Crew in Major League Soccer on Saturday. Miami will open the new FIFA tournament on June 14 against Egyptian and African champions Al Ahly and after a major dip in form they have found their touch again in their last two MLS games. A 4-2 win over Montreal in midweek, with Messi and Luis Suarez scoring two goals each, eased the tensions around Javier Mascherano's team and their renewed confidence was evident from the outset. Miami were helped by some uncharacteristically loose defending from Columbus, who have been one of the most consistent performers in MLS over the past three seasons but were easily opened up by Messi and Company. Argentine Tadeo Allende opened the scoring in the 13th minute when Messi, who had dropped deep into midfield, sent him goalwards with a long ball over the top and the forward confidently slotted home. Two minutes later, Columbus's Guatemalan goalkeeper Nicholas Hagen, standing in for the injured Patrick Schulte, then gifted Miami's second when he hesitated with the ball at his feet and passed straight to Messi, of all people, with the World Cup winner then attempting to chip him. Hagen scrambled, getting an outstretched palm on the ball but the shot looped into the net to make it 2-0 and leave the visitors in deep trouble. Messi made it three in the 24th minute when Sergio Busquets spotted the Crew defence were asleep and floated a pass over the top which Messi raced on to before lobbing the advancing Hagen. Messi and Miami fight back for 3-3 draw at Philadelphia Columbus gave themselves a glimmer of hope with a thundering header from Cesar Ruvalcaba in the 58th minute but six minutes later Miami had restored their three goal advantage. Messi broke through the middle and then fed Telasco Segovia who slipped the ball outside to Suarez who buried the ball into the bottom corner. The eight-times Ballon d'Or winner was the creator again when he fed substitute Fafa Picault who broke away before a clinical finish to complete the rout. Messi now heads off for international duty with Argentina, who have already qualified for the 2026 World Cup and are away to Chile on Thursday and host Colombia on June 10.
