‘I am your friend and I'll look after you but I am not your best friend': Nasser Hussain on Ben Stokes-Jofra Archer camaraderie

Indian Express5 days ago
Former England player Nasser Hussain discussed the camaraderie between pacer Jofra Archer and captain Ben Stokes, explaining how the Three Lions skipper makes the pacer tick. Archer has been in hot form since his comeback helping England defeat India at Lord's with the series currently at 2-1 in the hosts' favour.
'I like him. I like the fact that Ben knows what makes Jofra Archer tick. There's a huge amount of respect between the two of them and I said to you in the other game. At Lord's, exactly the same happened,' Hussain said on Sky Sports.
'Stokes has that mentality 'I am your friend and I'll look after you but I am not your best friend'. If you don't quite get it right, I will have a word with you. Even here, you see, he is having a word with him but in a nice way. I think you know your premier fast bowlers, you know your cricketers. You know what makes them tick. You'd have had Anderson and Broad. You'll know what to do with Anderson and you might have to do something different to Broad. You play one off against the other. He'll know what will make Archer tick an I think Archer is actually a better bowler when he is a little fired up and his legs start pumping a little bit,' he added.

Archer has been on Stokes side when the two won the 2019 Cricket World Cup with the pacer bowling the Super Over after the match was tied. Archer returned to the red ball setup for the first time since February 2021 against India in the 3rd Test at Lord's of the ongoing Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy where he took 5 wickets in the match. He also played the 4th Test at Manchester taking 4 wickets in both innings.
Archer, who was added to the England squad for the five-match series last month, had missed the second Test after he missed a training session at Edgbaston due to a family emergency. Archer, who has struggled with elbow-related injury to his bowling arm over the last several years, last played in a Test more than four years ago against India in Ahmedabad.

Watch: Amidst India's Lower-Order Batting Collapses, Mohammed Shami's Insta Video Creates A Stir

Last Updated: Mohammed Shami has been grinding it out in the nets after missing the cut for India's ongoing England tour. In the space of 34 deliveries, India's lower order was dismantled on the second morning of the Oval Test against England in London. India lost their final four wickets for the addition of just 6 runs after beginning the day's play at 218/6 in their first innings. And not the first time that India's tail has failed to wag unlike that of England which has frustrated the visitors on several occasions in the ongoing Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. India's tour started with excellent contributions from their top-order batters at Headingley – the venue of the 1st Test. However, their listless lower-order show played a major role in them losing the contest by five-wicket. Captain Shubman Gill cited it as one of the reasons why the team lost a match in which they appeared in control. 'I think it was a brilliant Test match. We had our chances, we dropped catches and our lower-order didn't contribute enough, but I'm proud of the team and overall, a good effort," Gill had said. Amidst the concerns over India's lower order batting, Mohammed Shami has shared a clip of him polishing his batting in the nets far away from the India limelight. Shami, who has been missing in action since the IPL 2025 was snubbed for the England tour with the team management not satisfied that he has built up the workload necessary for Test cricket. Shami had stitched a famous 10th-wicket partnership with Jasprit Bumrah during the Lord's Test between India and England in August 2021 that helped the tourists storm to a 151-run win. India were 209/9 when Shami and Bumrah got together. The duo then stitched an unbroken partnership of 89 runs with India declaring at 298/9 and setting England 272 to win. Shami's Fitness Woes Veteran fast bowler Shami had made his long-awaited international return earlier this year during a home white-ball series against England. After missing nearly 15 months of international cricket, he made his comeback in England T20Is and also featured in the ODI series that followed. He was also picked in India's squad for the Champions Trophy and then represented Sunrisers Hyderabad in IPL 2025. However, he wasn't picked for the England Tests. 'He (Shami) has been trying to get fit for the Test series. I don't think he is fit enough to play five Tests at the moment." I don't think his fitness is where it needs to be. It's just the medical guys who have told us that he has been ruled out of the series," Agarkar had said. Get latest Cricket news, live score and match results on News18. 'Stay out of the way': Ravi Shastri, Mike Atherton criticise Akash Deep's send-off to Ben Duckett

Akash Deep of India celebrates after dismissing Ben Duckett of England. NEW DELHI: One of the more controversial moments of Day 2 at The Oval came not from bat or ball, but from an overly zealous send-off. During England's innings in the fifth and final Test, India's pacer Akash Deep dismissed Ben Duckett after an intense exchange — and celebrated by wrapping an arm around the batter's shoulder, flashing a grin and muttering a few words. Live Score: India vs England 5th Test It began when Duckett, in the heat of an entertaining Bazball-fuelled 43 off 38 balls, tried to rattle the young Indian quick, reportedly saying, "You cannot get me out in here." The opener followed it up with a cheeky reverse ramp, delighting the crowd. Akash Deep had Duckett caught behind by Dhruv Jurel and followed it up with a demonstrative send-off—fist-pump, shoulder grab, and all. While the moment seemed playful to some, former cricketers Michael Atherton and Ravi Shastri didn't see it that way. Speaking on Sky Sports, Atherton was blunt in his disapproval. 'Can you imagine doing that to Viv Richards or any number? I would have hated that. If a bowler puts his arms around me, having just dismissed me — stay out of the way,' he said. Poll Do you think Akash Deep's send-off to Ben Duckett crossed the line? Yes, it was inappropriate No, it was just playful It depends on the context Shastri, offering a cheeky quip in return, added, 'If Athers had put his hand around me getting me out, I'd have said, 'Get out of the way!'' But the former India coach quickly turned serious: "No, no physical contact. I mean Duckett at that moment of time might have been thinking something else. Another player with a feisty temperament wouldn't have liked it and could have done something which he would have regretted. Just because it's being watched by millions around the globe and the match referee will be forced to take action because of the rules and the rulebook." Atherton added that while passion on the field is welcome, cricket is a non-contact sport and boundaries must be respected. "It's a serious point actually that, as I say, it seemed good natured and I like to give cricketers maximum leeway on the field because it is an emotional, passionate game. I like to see them getting stuck in. I don't like the match referees getting involved but it's a non-contact sport and something like that will end in problems. So I think the match referee has to stamp that out," Atherton elaborated. While the moment between Akash and Duckett may have seemed harmless on the surface, the incident has sparked debate about the lines between competitive spirit and overstepping boundaries in modern cricket. "Why are you going?" Mohammed Siraj Asked Jasprit Bumrah. Reply Was...

As the Indian cricket team was getting ready for the Day 2 of the 5th Test against England, came an update from the BCCI. Fast-bowling spearhead Jasprit Bumrah was released from India's squad, after not being included in playing XI for the ongoing fifth Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy Test against England at The Oval, due to workload management, said the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). Bumrah wasn't spotted in the Indian team bus ahead of arriving at the venue for day two's play. 'Mr Jasprit Bumrah has been released from India's squad for the fifth Test of the series against England. The fifth and final Test of the series is underway at Kennington Oval, London,' said the BCCI in a statement on Friday. After the Day 2 eneded, with Indian bowlers giving a good account of themselves - with Prasidh Krishna and Mohammed Siraj picking four wickets each - Bumrah was again discussed. Siraj revealed in a video chat with BCCI that he a funny convesation with Bumrah. 'I asked Jassi bhai, 'Why are you going? Who will I hug when I take five wickets?' He said, 'I'm here, you take your five wickets!'' Siraj told BCCI. Before the five-match series began in England, chief selector Ajit Agarkar and head coach Gautam Gambhir said Bumrah wouldn't feature in more than three Tests on tour due to workload management. Bumrah featured in the first Test at Headingley, Leeds, followed by the third and fourth games at Lord's and Old Trafford, Manchester, respectively. In three games, Bumrah picked 14 wickets, including two five-wicket hauls, coming off bowling 119.4 overs at an average of 26 to be the leading wicket-taker for India in the ongoing series. Bumrah could have been expected to play in the fifth Test at The Oval, but he wasn't included in the playing eleven. 'We obviously want to wheel him out, but we also want to respect where his body is at, and on the basis of that, we just felt that it wasn't worth including him in the squad. He has bowled a large number of overs, I know it doesn't always seem like that because he's only played three tests and he's only bowled in one innings in Manchester.' 'But if you look at the loads, he's bowled a lot of overs, and like he did say coming into the tour, he was going to be available for three games, and we just felt it was right on that call,' said India assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate at the end of day one's play. India's updated squad for fifth Test: Shubman Gill (C), KL Rahul (VC), Yashasvi Jaiswal, Sai Sudharsan, Abhimanyu Easwaran, Karun Nair, Ravindra Jadeja, Dhruv Jurel (WK), Washington Sundar, Shardul Thakur, Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, Akash Deep, Kuldeep Yadav, Anshul Kamboj, Arshdeep Singh, and N Jagadeesan (WK)
