Mohammed Shami has been grinding it out in the nets after missing the cut for India's ongoing England tour.
In the space of 34 deliveries, India's lower order was dismantled on the second morning of the Oval Test against England in London. India lost their final four wickets for the addition of just 6 runs after beginning the day's play at 218/6 in their first innings. And not the first time that India's tail has failed to wag unlike that of England which has frustrated the visitors on several occasions in the ongoing Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy.
India's tour started with excellent contributions from their top-order batters at Headingley – the venue of the 1st Test. However, their listless lower-order show played a major role in them losing the contest by five-wicket. Captain Shubman Gill cited it as one of the reasons why the team lost a match in which they appeared in control.
'I think it was a brilliant Test match. We had our chances, we dropped catches and our lower-order didn't contribute enough, but I'm proud of the team and overall, a good effort," Gill had said.
Amidst the concerns over India's lower order batting, Mohammed Shami has shared a clip of him polishing his batting in the nets far away from the India limelight. Shami, who has been missing in action since the IPL 2025 was snubbed for the England tour with the team management not satisfied that he has built up the workload necessary for Test cricket.
Shami had stitched a famous 10th-wicket partnership with Jasprit Bumrah during the Lord's Test between India and England in August 2021 that helped the tourists storm to a 151-run win.
India were 209/9 when Shami and Bumrah got together. The duo then stitched an unbroken partnership of 89 runs with India declaring at 298/9 and setting England 272 to win.
Shami's Fitness Woes
Veteran fast bowler Shami had made his long-awaited international return earlier this year during a home white-ball series against England. After missing nearly 15 months of international cricket, he made his comeback in England T20Is and also featured in the ODI series that followed. He was also picked in India's squad for the Champions Trophy and then represented Sunrisers Hyderabad in IPL 2025.
However, he wasn't picked for the England Tests.
'He (Shami) has been trying to get fit for the Test series. I don't think he is fit enough to play five Tests at the moment." I don't think his fitness is where it needs to be. It's just the medical guys who have told us that he has been ruled out of the series," Agarkar had said.

66 no less than a century: When batter Akash Deep thrilled Shubman Gill, teammates

Shubman Gill and the Indian team were left in awe of Akash Deep's performance with the bat on Day 3 of the Oval Test. Having come in as a nightwatchman on Day 2, Akash showed incredible poise during his innings of 66 from 94 balls and hitting 12 boundaries in the process. His 107-run stand with Yashasvi Jaiswal, who scored a hundred, helped India put up a target of 374 runs for England to chase to win the match. While Akash has played entertaining cameos during his career so far, this was an innings of substance that had his captain and teammates singing his praises. In a video released by the BCCI, Gill said that the knock was nothing short of hundred for the team. advertisement"I think these 66 runs of Akash — it's no less than a century," said Gill. The Indian captain revealed that there has been constant banter between the batters and bowlers in the team. He said that the batters constantly keep telling the tailenders to contribute with some runs and the Indian captain felt that Akash settled all the scores with his knock. "For a long time, there's always been this banter going on between us. The batters keep saying, 'You lower-order bowlers, contribute a bit, man.' What to say — I think in this match, they settled all scores with us," said Gill. Akash certainly got a lot of tips along the way with batting coach Sitanshu Kothak and KL Rahul revealing what they told the pacer ahead of Day 3. Kothak said that he told Akash to go for a big shot if the ball was in his arc, rather than defending. "Yesterday when he was in the lift after we reached the hotel, I told him — 'Akash, if you get it in the slot tomorrow, just hit it. Don't defend compulsorily, because in the last two innings you got out defending,'" said Kothak. Rahul said that he advised Akash to think like a batter and not to throw his wicket away. "Yeah, this morning, just had a brief chat and told him to think like a batter and, you know, not throw his wicket away," said KL Rahul. Jaiswal and Prasidh Krishna also praised Akash for his knock in the video. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Team India (@indiancricketteam)'I'm not going to get out'Akash revealed his mindset during the knock and said that he told himself that he was not going to get out and throw away his wicket. "Last night when I went to sleep, my mindset was that I'm not going to get out. If the ball gets me out, that's a different thing — but I won't throw my wicket. Even if the ball hits the body or hits anywhere, I have to play. Where there was a need to play the ball, I did. With Jaiswal, we had a partnership of over 100 runs — so that's very special for me," said Akash. Akash said, while the fifty was dear to him, the knock was made special by the fact that he spent more than two hours in the middle for the team. "That fifty is special for me, but more special than that is that I played two hours in the morning for the team — that is very special for me," said Akash. The knock from Akash even brought out a smile from India coach Gautam Gambhir as it gave India the advantage on the day. - EndsTune InMust Watch

ENG vs IND, 5th Test: Jaiswal savours century vs England, says surface has ‘enough bounce' for fourth innings

The last couple of weeks were challenging for Yashasvi Jaiswal. After starting the series on a high — he hit a century and an 87 in the first two Tests — Jaiswal struggled in the next six innings, scoring just 101 runs. However, the young batter struck form at The Oval on Saturday as his century put India in command in the fifth and final Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. Jaiswal claimed that while he was mentally ready for the challenge, it was all about putting in that extra effort. 'I think it's very important for all of us that we need to keep pushing ourselves. And this was our last innings here. So, mentally I was ready, and I had to keep pushing on and try to get as much as I could,' he said. 'Of course, after seeing the wicket in the first inning, I was thinking what would be the best option on this wicket? And I was just trying to play like that and be positive. My intent was very good, that I wanted to put pressure on the bowler — where they are going to bowl and where I can score runs. So my mentality is always like that. I think positively and go for my shots,' Jaiswal added. It was Jaiswal's sixth ton in Test cricket, and he enjoyed batting on a 'spicy' surface, and as he made the most of the reprieves and marched on, the southpaw also received a message from erstwhile India captain Rohit Sharma, who was in attendance on the third day. 'I saw Rohit bhai and I said hi to him. He gave me the message to keep playing,' he said. Jaiswal also admitted that the surface played better after India opted for a heavy roller in the morning. However, by his own admission, 'there is enough bounce'. 'If we keep bowling in the channel, it will be amazing. There is always movement on the wicket. It's not that easy to bat,' he said, hoping for the bowlers to come good in the second innings. 'Of course, we are quite confident. We just need to focus on our process and keep bowling in the right areas. That's what we are thinking, and we will try our best. Of course, we are all enjoying ourselves here. We want this. We want fun. We want some battle in the middle,' he said, adding with a smile, 'That is the fun. That's why you play Test cricket…'

MS Dhoni speaks about CSK's future, says 'we need to try to fix some loopholes'

Former India and CSK captain MS Dhoni said Chennai Super Kings' batting order has been sorted after two disappointing seasons and that the return of captain Ruturaj Gaikwad will further strengthen the team. Dhoni had to take over the leadership role in IPL 2025 after the Gaikwad was ruled out due to an elbow injury mid-way through the tournament. The five-time champions struggled throughout the season and finished last on the table with just four wins from 14 matches, struggling for consistent batting efforts.'We are slightly worried about our batting order. But I think our batting order is quite sorted out now. Rutu (Gaikwad) will be coming back. He got injured. But he will be coming back. So, we are quite sorted now,' said Dhoni during a private event in Chennai. Dhoni said that the franchise will look to strengthen the team even more in the mini-auction that would be held later this year. 'I won't say we (CSK) slacked off (in IPL 2025). But there were certain holes that we needed to plug in. A small auction is coming in December. Some loopholes are there, and we will try to plug those in,' he last played at the professional level for CSK against Punjab Kings at Mullanpur on April 8. The Maharashtrian had signed an English County deal with Yorkshire but withdrew citing personal he has been named in the West Zone squad for the Duleep Trophy, beginning later this acknowledged the previous two seasons as below-par and said it is important for the team to identify those grey areas.'Yes, the last couple of years have not been good for us. We have not been up to the mark. But what is important is for you to see the learnings. Yes, you had a bad season. But what went wrong? And that was the question for us last year also.'We were like, okay, there are some shortcomings. But first we needed to exactly figure out what were the shortcomings and then look at solutions,' he noted. Dhoni also thanked the loyal CSK fans for their wholehearted support during the strife time, and promised to give a better account of themselves in the coming season. 'I feel more often than not we have been able to figure out what exactly went wrong. In sports, you know you can have a very good time and at the same time there will be periods when you won't be performing well. In CSK, more often than not, we are on the higher side.'So, we do talk about the processes. But at the same time we do want the result to come to our side. Last year it (result) wasn't there. But looking ahead, we will try to sort out most of the things and we will hopefully be at our best,' he 44-year-old legend also underlined the strong relationship he has fostered over the years with Chennai and the IPL team based in the city.'It's a very long relationship that we have had and it started much before the start of IPL... 2005 was the time when I made my Test debut which happened to be in Chennai. So, it started from that point of time. And yes, CSK helped in a big way because all of a sudden I'm spending 45-50 days here." 'So, I feel the relationship over the years has grown. It helped me improve as a person. It helped me improve as a cricketer. So, CSK just happened. I think it's good for Chennai. So, today it's good for me also. Nowadays when we go and say CSK, it's not a brand only in India, but when we go to Australia, South Africa, or any of the cricket playing nations,' he noted.
