Algeciras port pilots vote to strike amid Operation Crossing the Strait

Ya Biladi02-07-2025
The Corporation of Maritime Pilots at the Port of Algeciras has voted to go on strike, with 34 out of 47 members present supporting the move. Four voted against it, while nine abstained. Although no date has been announced, the strike is expected to take place during the high-traffic Operation Crossing the Strait (OPE), which began in Spain on June 15. According to El Estrecho Digital, the strike follows failed negotiations with the fleet department after seven months of conflict over equipment and staffing shortages.
The outlet describes the current moment as a «particularly sensitive period, marked by deep disagreements over the availability of material and human resources». The union accuses management of adopting an «intransigent and hostile attitude toward workers, blocking any path to agreement».
Joaquín Millán, a workers' representative quoted by local media, warned that the decision to strike during OPE could «have a direct impact on port operations in the coming days». «This is a critical period for maritime traffic in southern Spain», he said, referring to the surge in passenger and cargo movement between Europe and North Africa, which coincides with Operation Marhaba on the Moroccan side.
Maritime workers in Algeciras say efforts to resolve the conflict through dialogue have made little headway. They claim that management's approach has fostered «a climate of confrontation, deepening internal divisions and failing to recognize the vital role pilots play in ensuring port safety».
While the specific dates and details of the strike have not yet been finalized, the union is expected to announce its mobilization schedule this Thursday. Large-scale action has not been ruled out, but union leaders stressed that «the situation could still be resolved if management demonstrates a genuine willingness to negotiate».

Morocco Launches Housing Campaign for Moroccans Residing Abroad

Rabat — Morocco's Ministry of National Territory Planning, Urban Planning, Housing and City Policy has launched a special campaign for Moroccans living abroad as part of the 'Marhaba 2025' operation. To implement the initiative, the ministry specified that it launched a mobile outreach caravan on August 2 in Tangier. Held under the theme 'Urban Planning and Housing at the Service of Moroccans Worldwide,' the caravan is scheduled to land in 10 cities across Morocco's regions until August 31. Royal directives drive initiative The ministry noted that rolling out this national campaign program for 2025 is in line with King Mohammed VI's directives and his special care for Moroccan diaspora members. The campaign follows circular number 7049 that Minister Fatima Ezzahra El Mansouri sent to Al Omran Group, urban agencies, and regional and provincial directorates under the ministry. The directive calls for active participation in bringing services closer to citizens and strengthening trust and communication for Moroccans living abroad. Strategic vision centers citizens Ministry officials pointed out that this initiative reflects a strategic vision that places citizens — both inside and outside the country — at the heart of the ministry's focus. The initiative is designed to provide field support and information that allows diaspora members to learn about the missions of the ministry and its programs aimed at providing decent housing, particularly the Direct Housing Support Program. Practical measures improve services The campaign includes several practical measures to improve reception quality and deliver effective public service. Not only did the ministry create reception and guidance spaces at all central and decentralized services and institutions under its authority, but it has also dedicated special windows inside commercial agencies of Al Omran companies and set up reception units at urban agencies and border crossings. Additionally, the ministry is set to organize open days to share insights on its programs, missions, and services, as well as providing detailed explanations about real estate offers related to housing or investment. Digital access and simplified procedures The ministry is adopting a digital aspect as part of its campaign, in order to facilitate diaspora members' access to urban planning data through digital platforms and direct communication. It also simplifies procedures and ensures special support for investment or housing files concerning this category of citizens. Tags: Housinghousing aid programhousing in MoroccoMoroccan MREs

Morocco Continues to Strengthen Position as Key Fertilizer Supplier to India

Rabat – Morocco continues to strengthen its position as a fertilizer supplier for many countries, including India. Last week, India's Minister of State for Chemicals and Fertilizers, Anupriya Patel, said Morocco is among the alternative suppliers for India in terms of water-soluble fertilizers. She told the Indian parliament that a 'significant quantity is important from China as well as alternative suppliers like Belgium, Egypt, Germany, and the USA.' Morocco's OCP Group is one of the leading and giant fertilizer suppliers. In 2023, the Moroccan fertilizer giant announced a deal with India to supply the country with 1.7 million metric tonnes of phosphate-based fertilizer. The agreement sought to provide India with up to 700,000 MT of Triple Super Phosphate. It is a phosphate-based fertilizer that has the highest phosphate content. The fertilizers can be used to meet the specific needs of plants and soils in India. The agreement also includes the delivery of 1,000,000 tons of diamonium phosphate to Indian farmers. In July, OCP Nutricrops celebrated surpassing five million tonnes of Tripe Super Phosphate fertilizer production. The fertilizer is also known as TSP, a key concentrated phosphate fertilizer that contains over 90% of phosphorus in a plant-available form. This makes it suitable for nutrient-deficient soils and smart fertilizer strategies. Morocco's phosphates and their derivatives' exports brought in $2 billion to the North African country in the first quarter of 2025, representing an increase of 18.2%. Moroccan Household Debt Falls Slightly in 2024, Government Workers Most Indebted

Rabat — Moroccan households reduced their debt burden slightly in 2024, with the average debt-to-income ratio dropping to 34% from 35% a year earlier, according to the country's 2024 annual financial stability report. The report, published jointly by Bank Al-Maghrib (BAM), the Insurance and Social Welfare Control Authority (ACAPS), and the Moroccan Capital Market Authority (AMMC), analyzed data from credit institutions covering approximately 439,780 loan files granted during 2024. Government workers lead borrowing activity The composition of borrowers shifted significantly between professional categories. Private sector employees saw their share of total borrowers shrink from 42% in 2023 to 33% in 2024. Meanwhile, government workers increased their presence, rising from 24% to 28% of all borrowers. Retirees and self-employed professionals maintained stable shares at 19% and 9% respectively. Despite their growing numbers, government workers carry the heaviest debt burden, with an average debt-to-income ratio of 62%. High earners dominate lending market The report indicates that borrowers earning more than MAD 10.000 ($1000) per month accounted for 60% of the total loan amount granted in 2024. Paradoxically, this high-income group maintains the lowest debt ratio at 31%, suggesting they borrow more in absolute terms but remain within comfortable repayment limits. Meanwhile, the report found that the 30-40 age group represents 26% of all borrowers, while those over 60 account for 24%. However, people aged 50-60 carry the highest debt burden, with an average ratio of 39%. It also showed that a concerning 32% of individual borrowers carry debt payments exceeding 40% of their income in 2024. Among this heavily indebted group, 38% have debt ratios between 40% and 50%. Government workers and private employees make up the majority of those with excessive debt burdens, representing 68% of borrowers whose debt payments exceed 40% of their income. The slight improvement in overall debt levels offers modest relief, but the concentration of high debt ratios among certain professional groups and age brackets reveals ongoing financial stress for significant portions of Morocco's borrowing population.
