Oscar Piastri has been hailed by title rival Lando Norris after taking a major step towards a first world championship title by defying wet conditions to win a rain-delayed Belgian Grand Prix.
Heading home McLaren teammate Norris, who had started on pole, means Australian driver Piastri's lead has jumped from nine to 16 points.

Mitch Owen's ODI nod as Jake Fraser-McGurk axed

Australian white-ball captain Mitch Marsh labelled new batting weapon Mitch Owen a 'ripping kid' as he earnt an ODI squad call-up for the Top End series against South Africa, with Jake Fraser-McGurk's single West Indian failure enough for him to be axed. Owen, who made a half-century in his T20 international debut in Jamaica, is in both the ODI and T20 squads for the series and has put himself in the frame for a T20 World Cup spot next year. The ODI retirements of Steve Smith and Glenn Maxwell opened the door for Owen to join the 50-over squad, with Test discard Marnus Labuschagne also earning an international recall and Travis Head is back after skipping the T20s in the West Indies. Both Test captain Pat Cummins and 100-Test quick Mitchell Starc won't play as they save themselves for the Ashes, but Josh Hazlewood has been included in both squads. Cameron Green, named man of the series in Australia's history-making 5-0 T20 sweep of the Windies, will also play both the ODIs and T20s as he continues to build batting form after a significant period sidelined following career-saving back surgery. 'As we build towards the T20 World Cup, the flexibility and depth shown in the West Indies, outside of the obvious results, has been a huge positive,' Australian selection chief George Bailey said. 'The flexibility within the batting order and ability of bowlers to bowl in different stages of the innings were particularly pleasing to see. 'Mitch Owen and Matt Kuhnemann making their respective debuts and the preparation and work done by Nathan Ellis to allow him to play all five matches were highlights.' Australia has 14 more matches over the next six months to prepare for next year's T20 World Cup in India, starting with the three against South Africa next month. But Fraser-McGurk faces a battle to regain his spot, axed again making just two runs opening the batting in the first T20 in the West Indies after a surprise recall given his struggles in the IPL and Major League cricket T20 tournaments. Marsh, said the emergence of players in the West Indies added depth to the squad at the right time and lauded Owen for his debut series performance. 'I thought Mitch was fantastic,' Marsh said. 'He's a ripping kid, took on the challenge, didn't seem overawed by the occasion of playing international cricket and seems like a pretty calm figure. 'And as for Cam, I think the biggest thing for me is just him enjoying his cricket, played with a big smile on his face this series and he was awesome, played some really critical roles for us with the bat and was awesome in the field.' West Coast Eagles chief executive Don Pyke says club is eager to lock away Harley Reid before end of season

West Coast chief executive Don Pyke says there's been positive progress on talks around a contract extension for Harley Reid, with the Eagles boss eager to reach an agreement by the end of the season. Reid's management group has presented the Eagles with a proposal that would see the 20-year-old sign a two-year extension, with the option for that to then be pushed out to 11 years. If West Coast agree to that deal, it would put Reid on the richest contract in Australian sport, worth an estimated $24 million over 11 years. The West Australian revealed on Tuesday the young gun will head home to country Victoria for a spell after he was ruled out for the season with a syndesmosis ankle injury. After it was confirmed he would miss the club's final four games of the season, Reid gave the best indication yet he is keen to stay at the Eagles, posting 'BRB (be right back) on his Instagram, telling his followers the players would 'keep building together'. Pyke said he was confident Reid would see out the final year of his initial contract at the club next season and hoped to have him locked away by the end of 2025. 'Yeah we are. He is contracted here until next year and we hope to get something done. If we don't then we will maybe have to park it and pick it up later on,' he told SEN. 'He is enjoying his time here, he is really engaged with the group. He is very much part of the group and he wants to see us get back to where we want to be, which is not where we are at the moment.' Reid's manager, Nick Gieschen of Connors Sport Management group, was in Perth across the weekend. Pyke said discussions with Reid's camp had been positive. 'That's moving along well. Obviously, since Harley has arrived it has been a unique situation that probably continues,' he said. 'The pleasing thing for us is that all indications from Harley and his management are that he is really happy here and is keen to stay here, it's just about working through the next bit. 'We respect it is a big decision for Harley, he is a 20-year-old in his second year of football and I think we are all excited by the prospect of having him part of the next phase for West Coast. 'We will keep working through that with his management and Harley himself and see how we go. 'Obviously he is still contracted for next year, but if we can get something done we'd love to do that.' Pyke also confirmed the Eagles figures in charge of signing off on a deal for Reid. That group includes list boss Matt Clarke, head of football John Worsfold and senior coach Andrew McQualter and will be overseen by Pyke himself. The Eagles also met with Oscar Allen and his management last week, but Pyke said they were no closer in their talks with the co-captain, who now appears almost certain to be at Brisbane next season. 'They are still ongoing, we met with Oscar's management last week as well. We are in a position where we have had some offers in front of Oscar, they clearly haven't been accepted, otherwise we would have got the deal done,' he said. 'We are in the next phase of going 'OK, what is it he's looking for that will keep him at the club' and we will keep talking to his management about that and we will see where it gets to. 'There's been no real progress on that, so we will see where it gets to in coming weeks. I'm sure we will get to a point where we will understand what it will take to keep Oscar if he is looking at going and we will work through that.'

Big-hitting Owen receives another Aussie call-up

Big-hitting allrounder Mitch Owen is set to play his first ODI for Australia after making a stunning T20 debut against the West Indies. The Hobart Hurricanes hero has been selected in both of Australia's white-ball squads for their upcoming matches against South Africa in Darwin, Cairns and Mackay. On debut, Owen smashed a powerful fifty last week against the West Indies. In four matches for Australia in the Caribbean, the 23-year-old averaged 41.66, also hitting 37 and 36 not out to go with his stunning debut knock. It has been a rapid rise for Owen since last December, going from a virtual unknown before the BBL started to now being an important part of Australia's future. "As we build towards the T20 World Cup the flexibility and depth shown in the West Indies, outside of the obvious results, has been a huge positive," chairman of selectors George Bailey said. "The flexibility within the batting order and ability of bowlers to bowl in different stages of the innings were particularly pleasing to see. "Mitch Owen and Matt Kuhnemann making their respective debuts and the preparation and work done by Nathan Ellis to allow him to play all five matches were highlights." Three-format stars Travis Head and Josh Hazlewood return after resting for the 5-0 whitewash of the West Indies that followed the 3-0 win in the Test series. Test and ODI captain Pat Cummins will sit out both series, allowing him to prepare for the Ashes, starting in November. As expected Jake Fraser-McGurk has been axed after a torrid 12 months. Fraser-McGurk was unexpectedly recalled to face the West Indies, but was dropped after the first match. WA pair Cooper Connolly and Aaron Hardie have also made way, as has spinner Tanveer Sangha.
