Truck driving hobby trainer Craig Cousins sets sights on Sydney first
All that is about to change.
Cousins, whose fairytale horse The Inflictor raced in the Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap and won a stakes race a fortnight later, has set his sights on the big time of racing in Sydney.
Cousins has never set foot on a Sydney racetrack but that will change when he heads south with The Inflictor who he will deploy in the $1.5m Alan Brown Stakes (1400m) at Rosehill in October.
There is even an outside chance he could race in the $2m Five Diamonds if he impresses in Sydney.
'As far as going interstate with racing, Murwillumbah is as far as I've been,' Cousins said.
'I've never even set foot on Rosehill or any of the Sydney tracks.
'I've driven past them, but never been at them.
'At this stage, the Alan Brown would be his only run in Sydney.
'But if he happened to win by six lengths or something, I guess we would think about the Five Diamonds.'

The Inflictor is one of the feel-good stories of racing in 2025, given Cousins has a full-time job as a truck driver and only three horses which he stables out the back of his parents' house in Brisbane.
The Inflictor raced without luck in the Stradbroke, finishing 11th, before rebounding to score the Listed Tatt's Mile a fortnight later.
He was last seen finishing a brave third in the Glasshouse Handicap after not being given much peace up front.
Currently having a short spell, Cousins will bring The Inflictor back for the spring and he will also contest the Weetwood Handicap in Toowoomba.
'He will be first-up in a race at Doomben over 1110m on September 13 and then he will race up in Toowoomba in the Weetwood before going to Sydney,' Cousins said.
'Cejay Graham will have the ride on him for the Queensland races.
'At this stage, he will have three runs in his next campaign.
'The idea of that is to then give him a small break and set him for a good race over the Queensland summer carnival.'

The All-Australian fancy was issued a three-week ban for his high contact on Melbourne midfielder Tom Sparrow. 'It's a pretty significant challenge, especially this week because (Brodie) Grundy has been in such terrific form for the Swans,' Clarkson said. '(Grundy) has been a key part in their turnaround in form in the last six to eight weeks in particular. 'It's not ideal we lose 'Big X', but it presents an opportunity for someone else to step up in that role. We'll decide that this afternoon.' Bet: Ellis Beach to win, Daily Double 1st Leg 4, 2nd Leg 6 â– â– â– â– â– BLAZING SWORD (5) is a Bendigo-housed three-year-old who shares his name with Contract Racing's exceptional late 1980s colt who ended up as a stallion in Thailand. The 2021 model of Blazing Sword has a tidy little resume of one win, three seconds and a third in his 10 starts. Best of all, the son of Too Darn Hot has a win and a third on his only two Heavy runs. GOOFINATOR (10) sent out some rather positive signs second-up that a win was close at hand. FLUTTERBY (6) is flying. â– â– â– â– â– JUST LIKE LIAM (6) is from the 17th and final crop of Albert Stapleford's beloved Magic Albert, a great little over-achiever at stud he was too. Anyway, Just Like Liam is trained here at Albury by Garry Worsnop; 11 times he has raced there for two wins and three placings. He has also won at the track and distance. FREDDY'S SHOCK (10) ran second to Sorry Sunshine on a Heavy 10 at Wagga last start. Both are clearly in the mix here. As is RUSHFORD (1) who was fifth in that same race.

Don Diego De Vega wins drama-filled Grafton Cup
There was no shortage of drama in the 2025 renewal of Thursday's $200,000 Grafton Cup (2350m). Don Diego De Vega, trained by Annabel and Rob Archibald, also found his way into the centre of the track under Zac Lloyd after coming from closer to the fence but didn't impede the run of any other horses in doing so. 'My plan sort of changed in the barriers when Bear On The Loose got scratched as one of the speed runners in the race,' Lloyd said. 'Going to the gates he was full of energy so I was confident he was going to begin well and once he did that it made my job pretty easy. 'Got the perfect run behind Quietness and obviously it rolled off the fence and my bloke shot through. 'I probably should have changed my whip when he ran out but he was in front and it didn't matter.' Quietness fought back but was unable to bridge back the margin after losing all of its momentum and finished second for John O'Shea and Tom Charlton. Queensland raider Zoology ran on for third spot while Touristic was fourth.
