Truck driving hobby trainer Craig Cousins sets sights on Sydney first
All that is about to change.
Cousins, whose fairytale horse The Inflictor raced in the Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap and won a stakes race a fortnight later, has set his sights on the big time of racing in Sydney.
Cousins has never set foot on a Sydney racetrack but that will change when he heads south with The Inflictor who he will deploy in the $1.5m Alan Brown Stakes (1400m) at Rosehill in October.
There is even an outside chance he could race in the $2m Five Diamonds if he impresses in Sydney.
'As far as going interstate with racing, Murwillumbah is as far as I've been,' Cousins said.
'I've never even set foot on Rosehill or any of the Sydney tracks.
'I've driven past them, but never been at them.
'At this stage, the Alan Brown would be his only run in Sydney.
'But if he happened to win by six lengths or something, I guess we would think about the Five Diamonds.'

The Inflictor is one of the feel-good stories of racing in 2025, given Cousins has a full-time job as a truck driver and only three horses which he stables out the back of his parents' house in Brisbane.
The Inflictor raced without luck in the Stradbroke, finishing 11th, before rebounding to score the Listed Tatt's Mile a fortnight later.
He was last seen finishing a brave third in the Glasshouse Handicap after not being given much peace up front.
Currently having a short spell, Cousins will bring The Inflictor back for the spring and he will also contest the Weetwood Handicap in Toowoomba.
'He will be first-up in a race at Doomben over 1110m on September 13 and then he will race up in Toowoomba in the Weetwood before going to Sydney,' Cousins said.
'Cejay Graham will have the ride on him for the Queensland races.
'At this stage, he will have three runs in his next campaign.
'The idea of that is to then give him a small break and set him for a good race over the Queensland summer carnival.'

AFL 2025: Roos hit by triple blow as McDonald, Larkey, Xerri ruled out
Don't miss out on the headlines from AFL. Followed categories will be added to My News. A combination of injury and suspension has left North Melbourne with holes in each third of the ground. The Kangaroos will face an in-form Sydney without Luke McDonald, Tristan Xerri and Nick Larkey on Saturday. McDonald has been ruled out for the remainder of the year after being rushed into shoulder surgery this week. He sustained the injury in the Roos' poor loss to Hawthorn and failed to recover well enough to return this year. 'When we went and saw the specialist they said, 'Let's leave it for a couple of weeks and see if he can regain some strength in it', knowing full well he was probably going to require surgery at the end of the year,' North Melbourne coach Alastair Clarkson said. 'But it just hasn't improved enough in terms of the strength or function to get him to the line, so he's gone in for surgery today (Thursday). 'He'll be out for the rest of the season. He's still contracted, so he'll repair the shoulder and get going again.' The Kangaroos are taking a cautious approach with spearhead Larkey after scans revealed a 'slight' PCL tear. 'He got that knock against Western Bulldogs, we thought it was ever so slight, but when we got it scanned, it revealed the slightest of damage,' Clarkson said. 'We're just waiting for that to repair, really, not wanting to take too much of a risk with him. 'As we saw today, he couldn't do the required training we needed him to do to make him available this week, so maybe a week-by-week thing.' Xerri, meanwhile, leaves the biggest hole against Sydney and Brodie Grundy after his suspension was upheld. The All-Australian fancy was issued a three-week ban for his high contact on Melbourne midfielder Tom Sparrow. 'It's a pretty significant challenge, especially this week because (Brodie) Grundy has been in such terrific form for the Swans,' Clarkson said. '(Grundy) has been a key part in their turnaround in form in the last six to eight weeks in particular. 'It's not ideal we lose 'Big X', but it presents an opportunity for someone else to step up in that role. We'll decide that this afternoon.' In positive news, North is set to regain gun midfielders George Wardlaw and Luke Davies-Uniacke from their respective concussions. Tamworth, Albury best bets, inside mail for Friday July 19, 2025
Form analyst Shayne O'Cass provides his best bets and race-by-race analysis for Tamworth and Albury on Friday. The Form: Complete NSW Racing thoroughbred form, including video replays and all you need to know about every horse, jockey and trainer. TAMWORTH BEST BET Huge run on debut here; even better the next time here as well. NEXT BEST Won't be left with any excuses from the rails draw. VALUE Race 3 No. 3: HE'STHECHIEF Placed at three of four, lost the rider in the other one. QUADDIE Race 5: 3, 6, 7, 14 Race 6: 2, 4, 5, 6 Race 7: 1, 10 Race 8: 2, 5, 6, 9 JOCKEY TO FOLLOW GRANT BUCKLEY could be in for a good day. ALBURY BEST BET Race 2 No. 3: STRAIGHT FIRE Arguably 'the best horse in the race' which is a good place to start. NEXT BEST Race 8 No. 6: JUST LUKE LIAM Has a good record at the home track and at this trip. VALUE Race 6 No. 4: ELLIS BEACH Might be the best of a questionable bunch. â– â– â– â– â– INSIDE MAIL - TAMWORTH RACE 5: McDonalds Tamworth (Bm58) 1400m CONSIDERED (7) is a So You Think granddaughter of Kiss From A Rose which belies her $30,000 price-tag. Chalk her up as another bargain for Group One Thoroughbreds; she's already won back her purchase price in four starts. Last start winner, drawn well, at home. VISUALISE (6) has been rock solid in his four runs since he got to local trainer Jacob Perrett's stable. Beaten a lip at this track and trip by To Be Frank the other day. Bet: Considered to win, quinella 6, 7 â– â– â– â– â– RACE 6: Koobah Performance Horses (Bm82) 1600m RAJNISH (5) has raced at Tamworth twice for a second and then that last start win which also happened to be over the mile. It was a very comprehensive victory too; he came from off the speed to chase down a very respectable bunch. WEALTHY INVESTOR (6) won his fourth race at start 41 out at Dubbo on June 29 but for one, he won very easily indeed and two, his poor win record is more a reflection of some of the strong races he has contested. Bet: Rajnish to win, Daily Double 1st Leg 5, 2nd Leg 6 â– â– â– â– â– SAINTLY SANDS (10) turned in a fantastic debut here when third to a nice style of horse in Savethebesttilast back on January 6. The Rodney Northam trained filly came back to Tamworth 17 days later and won her 1400m Maiden. Spelled, no public trials, but she is clearly handy filly in a top barn. DEEBO (1) boasts some outstanding figures right across the board but those home track, and trip, numbers are hard to go past. Bet: Saintly Sands to win, exacta 10 to beat 1, quinella 1, 10 â– â– â– â– â– ZAKOR (6) has always raced well at Tamworth from the day he broke his Maiden here way back as a two-year-old prior to his fourth in the Romantic Dream. The Justin Bowen-trained gelding tries his heart out every time, if he gets beaten it is usually either bad luck or he just wasn't quite good enough on the day. SPECK (8) resumes on a hat-trick, bearing in mind that the second of the sequence was a Randwick TAB Highway. WHO GOES HERE (3) is four from four at the track and trip. â– â– â– â– â– INSIDE MAIL - ALBURY LUNAR MOJO (1) has been awfully costly to follow but at the same time he has placed at six of his eight starts and four of them are seconds. On top of that he has two seconds and a third from four Albury runs and has twice placed second on Heavy It's now or never again. FITZALAN (6) led and was passed late on debut at Wangaratta, One would imagine that is the modus operandi again here from barrier 2. MACHETE (8) is trained here now and was good in her two Victorian runs. Bet: Lunar Mojo to win â– â– â– â– â– ELLIS BEACH (4) is having his first run for the new management. It will be his first run in NSW as well but he is fit for purpose on the score of a July 7 trial (ran second) at home at Wangaratta. Finds a winnable race. Not sold on the Heavy form of POWERFUL MAJIK (5) but he ran a good race here on debut. CAYMAN ISLAND (7) turned in his best career run when fourth to a handy horse at Wagga at $101. Bet: Ellis Beach to win, Daily Double 1st Leg 4, 2nd Leg 6 â– â– â– â– â– BLAZING SWORD (5) is a Bendigo-housed three-year-old who shares his name with Contract Racing's exceptional late 1980s colt who ended up as a stallion in Thailand. The 2021 model of Blazing Sword has a tidy little resume of one win, three seconds and a third in his 10 starts. Best of all, the son of Too Darn Hot has a win and a third on his only two Heavy runs. GOOFINATOR (10) sent out some rather positive signs second-up that a win was close at hand. FLUTTERBY (6) is flying. â– â– â– â– â– JUST LIKE LIAM (6) is from the 17th and final crop of Albert Stapleford's beloved Magic Albert, a great little over-achiever at stud he was too. Anyway, Just Like Liam is trained here at Albury by Garry Worsnop; 11 times he has raced there for two wins and three placings. He has also won at the track and distance. FREDDY'S SHOCK (10) ran second to Sorry Sunshine on a Heavy 10 at Wagga last start. Both are clearly in the mix here. As is RUSHFORD (1) who was fifth in that same race.

Don Diego De Vega wins drama-filled Grafton Cup
There was no shortage of drama in the 2025 renewal of Thursday's $200,000 Grafton Cup (2350m). Race favourite Bear On The Loose was scratched just before the field was set to jump while second favourite Quietness ran off the track in the concluding stages and cost itself the race. • PUNT LIKE A PRO: Become a Racenet iQ member and get expert tips – with fully transparent return on investment statistics – from Racenet's team of professional punters at our Pro Tips section. SUBSCRIBE NOW! Quietness led the field of 12 and travelled strongly into the home bend before wandering about and opening the door for Don Diego De Vega to snatch the victory. Don Diego De Vega, trained by Annabel and Rob Archibald, also found his way into the centre of the track under Zac Lloyd after coming from closer to the fence but didn't impede the run of any other horses in doing so. DON DIEGO DE VEGA wins the Grafton Cup! @ZacLloydx gets the best out of the @ANeashamRacing grey to take out the @clarenceriverjc 's feature race, running down Quietness with Zoology in third. @tabcomau — Racing NSW (@racing_nsw) July 17, 2025 It gives Lloyd his first win in the day two feature and he admitted he had to change plans after Bear On The Loose was a late withdrawal. 'My plan sort of changed in the barriers when Bear On The Loose got scratched as one of the speed runners in the race,' Lloyd said. 'Going to the gates he was full of energy so I was confident he was going to begin well and once he did that it made my job pretty easy. 'Got the perfect run behind Quietness and obviously it rolled off the fence and my bloke shot through. 'I probably should have changed my whip when he ran out but he was in front and it didn't matter.' Quietness fought back but was unable to bridge back the margin after losing all of its momentum and finished second for John O'Shea and Tom Charlton. Queensland raider Zoology ran on for third spot while Touristic was fourth.
