TAMWORTH
BEST BET
Huge run on debut here; even better the next time here as well.

Won't be left with any excuses from the rails draw.
VALUE
Race 3 No. 3: HE'STHECHIEF
Placed at three of four, lost the rider in the other one.
QUADDIE
Race 5: 3, 6, 7, 14
Race 6: 2, 4, 5, 6
Race 7: 1, 10
Race 8: 2, 5, 6, 9

ALBURY
BEST BET
Race 2 No. 3: STRAIGHT FIRE
Arguably 'the best horse in the race' which is a good place to start.
NEXT BEST
Race 8 No. 6: JUST LUKE LIAM
Has a good record at the home track and at this trip.
VALUE
Race 6 No. 4: ELLIS BEACH
Might be the best of a questionable bunch.

INSIDE MAIL - TAMWORTH
RACE 5: McDonalds Tamworth (Bm58) 1400m
CONSIDERED (7) is a So You Think granddaughter of Kiss From A Rose which belies her $30,000 price-tag. Chalk her up as another bargain for Group One Thoroughbreds; she's already won back her purchase price in four starts. Last start winner, drawn well, at home. VISUALISE (6) has been rock solid in his four runs since he got to local trainer Jacob Perrett's stable. Beaten a lip at this track and trip by To Be Frank the other day.
Bet: Considered to win, quinella 6, 7
â– â– â– â– â–
RACE 6: Koobah Performance Horses (Bm82) 1600m
RAJNISH (5) has raced at Tamworth twice for a second and then that last start win which also happened to be over the mile. It was a very comprehensive victory too; he came from off the speed to chase down a very respectable bunch. WEALTHY INVESTOR (6) won his fourth race at start 41 out at Dubbo on June 29 but for one, he won very easily indeed and two, his poor win record is more a reflection of some of the strong races he has contested.
Bet: Rajnish to win, Daily Double 1st Leg 5, 2nd Leg 6
â– â– â– â– â–
SAINTLY SANDS (10) turned in a fantastic debut here when third to a nice style of horse in Savethebesttilast back on January 6. The Rodney Northam trained filly came back to Tamworth 17 days later and won her 1400m Maiden. Spelled, no public trials, but she is clearly handy filly in a top barn. DEEBO (1) boasts some outstanding figures right across the board but those home track, and trip, numbers are hard to go past.
Bet: Saintly Sands to win, exacta 10 to beat 1, quinella 1, 10
â– â– â– â– â–
ZAKOR (6) has always raced well at Tamworth from the day he broke his Maiden here way back as a two-year-old prior to his fourth in the Romantic Dream. The Justin Bowen-trained gelding tries his heart out every time, if he gets beaten it is usually either bad luck or he just wasn't quite good enough on the day. SPECK (8) resumes on a hat-trick, bearing in mind that the second of the sequence was a Randwick TAB Highway. WHO GOES HERE (3) is four from four at the track and trip.
â– â– â– â– â–
INSIDE MAIL - ALBURY
LUNAR MOJO (1) has been awfully costly to follow but at the same time he has placed at six of his eight starts and four of them are seconds. On top of that he has two seconds and a third from four Albury runs and has twice placed second on Heavy It's now or never again. FITZALAN (6) led and was passed late on debut at Wangaratta, One would imagine that is the modus operandi again here from barrier 2. MACHETE (8) is trained here now and was good in her two Victorian runs.
Bet: Lunar Mojo to win
â– â– â– â– â–
ELLIS BEACH (4) is having his first run for the new management. It will be his first run in NSW as well but he is fit for purpose on the score of a July 7 trial (ran second) at home at Wangaratta. Finds a winnable race. Not sold on the Heavy form of POWERFUL MAJIK (5) but he ran a good race here on debut. CAYMAN ISLAND (7) turned in his best career run when fourth to a handy horse at Wagga at $101.
Bet: Ellis Beach to win, Daily Double 1st Leg 4, 2nd Leg 6
â– â– â– â– â–
BLAZING SWORD (5) is a Bendigo-housed three-year-old who shares his name with Contract Racing's exceptional late 1980s colt who ended up as a stallion in Thailand. The 2021 model of Blazing Sword has a tidy little resume of one win, three seconds and a third in his 10 starts. Best of all, the son of Too Darn Hot has a win and a third on his only two Heavy runs. GOOFINATOR (10) sent out some rather positive signs second-up that a win was close at hand. FLUTTERBY (6) is flying.
â– â– â– â– â–
JUST LIKE LIAM (6) is from the 17th and final crop of Albert Stapleford's beloved Magic Albert, a great little over-achiever at stud he was too. Anyway, Just Like Liam is trained here at Albury by Garry Worsnop; 11 times he has raced there for two wins and three placings. He has also won at the track and distance. FREDDY'S SHOCK (10) ran second to Sorry Sunshine on a Heavy 10 at Wagga last start. Both are clearly in the mix here. As is RUSHFORD (1) who was fifth in that same race.

Australia Cup: Melbourne City suffers shock early exit

A-League champions Melbourne City have defended their controversial decision to field a youth team in the club's shock 2-0 Australia Cup loss to NPL NSW outfit APIA Leichhardt. Having entered the Cup at the round-of-32 stage, City's bid to reach the last 16 ended on Tuesday night in wet conditions at Leichhardt Oval. City's starting side included only one player – 19-year-old striker Max Caputo – that started in last season's A-League grand final, with the oldest player in the team being 21-year-old midfielder Alessandro Lopane. City's squad – which had an average age of 17.6 – was otherwise almost entirely made of teenagers, including 15-year-old substitute Akeem Gerald, from the club's NPL Victoria second division team. City's decision not to use almost all of the club's first-choice players led to accusations that the club had treated the Cup with contempt and had shown APIA a lack of respect. However, City's football director Michael Petrillo said the club had little choice but to field a team made up entirely of young players due to injuries and a late start to pre-season training. 'There was no way we were ready,' Petrillo said 'We came back to training really late (July 15). If it (the Cup game) was in maybe another two weeks, then we probably would have played another four or five of the senior players.' Melbourne City 15-year-old substitute Akeem Gerald (centre)_wins the ball during his team's 2-0 Australia Cup to APIA Leichhardt. Picture:Petrillo said the club wasn't willing to gamble on the fitness of players with City's AFC Champions League Elite campaign set to start in about six weeks' time. 'We would have played anyone that was ready but we didn't want to take any risks because we're a thin squad, we've got to play on two fronts (Champions League and A-League), and we need to make sure everyone's fit and well, particularly when we had a lot of injuries last season,' he said. 'We don't want to go down the same track again this season.' Petrillo was confident a host of regulars, including captain Aziz Behich, Joe Marston Medal winner Mathew Leckie, defenders Kai Trewin and Nathaniel Atkinson, midfielder Andreas Kuen and goalkeeper Patrick Beach, would be available for a couple of trial games City is hopeful of scheduling in late August. The club is also planing to sign two foreign attacking players in the upcoming weeks in a bid to further strengthen its squad. Australia Cup round-of-16 (games to be played August 9-13): South Melbourne v Auckland FC, Avondale v APIA Leichhardt, Brisbane City v Olympic Kingsway, Heidelberg United v Western Sydney Wanderers, Nunawading City v Wellington Phoenix, Sydney United 58 v Sydney FC, Cooks Hill United FC v Newcastle Jets, Metro Stars v Macarthur FC. ‘Coin toss': Zak Brown opens up on McLaren championship battle

McLaren boss Zak Brown has insisted the team won't be playing favourites and that the championship race will be a 'coin toss' between his two drivers. Australian Oscar Piastri has had the upper hand on teammate Lando Norris for the majority of the season having won six of the first 13 races. Fox Sports, available on Kayo Sports, is the only place to watch every practice, qualifying session and race in the 2025 FIA Formula One World Championship™ LIVE in 4K. New to Kayo? Join now and get your first month for just $1. The 24-year-old from Melbourne holds a 16-point advantage over his 25-year-old British teammate ahead of this weekend's Hungarian Grand Prix. With McLaren on track to secure their first drivers' championship since 2008, Brown is leaving the championship door open and refusing to back just one of the two. 'I think Oscar was a little disappointed with qualifying in Belgium. Lando was very happy. I'm sure he'll be a little bummed that he didn't win today, but it's coming off two wins. I think it's going to be a coin toss every weekend,' he told Sky Sport following the Belgian Grand Prix. 'Oscar is a machine. And what's impressive is how aggressive he is, and yet he always brings the car home. That's quite a talent.' With four-time world champion Max Verstappen sitting in third place, 81 points behind, Brown isn't ruling the Red Bull driver out of the equation. 'I think it's too early. It's looking good, but Max … there's a lot of racing left to go. We've got a nice gap, but I wouldn't say we're there,' he said. 'We've all been around this sport too long. To start dancing before you're in the end zone is a very dangerous thing to do.' The Formula 1 grid will descended into Hungary, the place where last season Piastri claimed his maiden victory. Fast forward 12 months and the rising star has equalled Daniel Ricciardo's tally of career wins with eight. But with two drivers in the one garage fighting it out for the right to be crowned the world champion, McLaren could face an ugly fight in the second half of the season. Team principal Andrea Stella believes that driver ability will decide the world championship rather than team orders. 'We saw in Silverstone that a sporting issue for Oscar during the safety car restart and [the resulting] penalty cost him the race,' he said. 'In Spa, it was always going to be very difficult for Lando to keep the position [from Piastri], starting first at the safety car restart. At the same time, I think Lando didn't help himself by not having a great gap on the finish line. 'So, I think the execution is what is going to make the main difference.'

Coffs Harbour, Kembla Grange best bets, inside mail for Friday, August 1, 2025

Racenet and The Daily Telegraph form analyst Shayne O'Cass provides his best bets and race-by-race analysis for Coffs Harbour and best bets for Kembla Grange on Friday. The Form: Complete NSW Racing thoroughbred form, including video replays and all you need to know about every horse, jockey and trainer. COFFS HARBOUR BEST BET Race 2 No. 3: PIEDI VELOCI Has the talent but needs to execute and he'll make the grade. NEXT BEST Debuts off a series of truly outstanding trials. VALUE Race 3 No. 4: TWIGMAN Ran in the Australian Derby as a three-year-old. Won two starts ago. QUADDIE Race 5: 2, 6, 11, 13 Race 6: 4, 5, 9 Race 7: 1, 7, 13 Race 8: 7, 8, 14 JOCKEY TO FOLLOW AARON BULLOCK starts his defence of his 2024/25 Statewide Jockey Premiership title. KEMBLA GRANGE BEST BET Race 7 No. 3: MR ROCK IT Has all the numbers to ensure back-to-back Kembla wins. NEXT BEST Race 6 No. 1: BILLUND Superbly bred Team Hawkes gelding who trials well. VALUE Race 1 No. 4: POUR BENN Ace High son in the same stable as the former VRC Derby winner. Has scope. QUADDIE Race 5: 1,2,3,4 Race 6: 1,2,6,12 Race 7: 3,5,8 Race 8: 2,10,11,13 JOCKEY TO FOLLOW KEAGAN LATHAM was a tearaway winner of his fifth Provincial Jockeys crown in 2024/25. LAY OF THE DAY Kembla Race 1 No. ZELJKO OMSIDE MAIL — COFFS HARBOUR RACE 1: Coffs Asphalt Showcase (Bm74) 1000m ZOOM OUTCOME (4) is a great advertisement for his Tuncurry based trainer Joseph Burges. The horse has won three of his past six starts and was second at another. His overall record is six wins and five placings, four of them seconds. Has accepted for Newcastle, where it is his preferred Heavy surface. Assuming he is absent, all roads lead back to the stablemate MARKWELL DREAMER (1) who is one for one here and is blissfully happy on Soft going. Bet: Zoom Outcome to win or if scratched Markwell Dreamer to win â– â– â– â– â– PIEDI VELOCI (3) is a rather promising horse from the local Donna Grisedale barn. The long and the short of this son of Supido's story so far is that he is indeed talented but he is quite raw and is prone to beating himself. If and when he can execute, he'll rocket through the grades. IMPENDING FORTUNE (2) has drawn very well indeed and just could be better equipped or given a better lead-in to the 1400m. OL' MATE COOP (13) is costly but ultra-consistent. Bet: Piedi Veloci to win â– â– â– â– â– TWIGMAN (4) is a son of the VRC Victoria Derby winner, Preferment, and actually ran in the Australian Derby himself. Still on pedigree matters, Twigman's third dam was the super-fast Newmarket Handicap winner, Ruffles. Twigman's 'best' is better than the rest here. SHERRIFF CODY (6) has a fine set of numbers right across the board not least that he has a second and a third among his three track and distance runs. CENOTES (7) can figure on his 'old form'. STROBING (11) is very fit and can stay. Bet: Twigman to win â– â– â– â– â– HEAD OF THE RIVER (12) was bought by Proven Thoroughbreds for $100,000 at the 2024 Inglis Classic Yearling Sale. This now three-year-old daughter of Shamus Award has been trialling up in Queensland like a 'good horse' and was dealt a 'winning draw' if he can convert. Speaking of good trials and good horses, Matthew Dunn's Yes Yes Yes filly MRS GOLDBERG (13) was so impressive when she won her 1050m Heat at Deagon on July 8. MOREBAR (7), the Noel Mayfield-Smith local, was better than it reads in his trial here. Bet: Head Of The River to win, quinella 12, 13, box trifecta 7, 8, 12, 13 â– â– â– â– â– MY PEPPERJACK (13) was racing around Rockhampton, Yeppoon, Mackay and such until coming back to NSW to Sally Taylor who can run here or at home on Tuesday at Taree. If she runs here, she will have Jon Grisedale on again subsequent to their third at Grafton on Ramornie Day. SNITZENEGGER (6) is a huge player here but just wanted to point out his fascinating pedigree; yes, he is by Snitzel but his dam is pretty much a three-quarter-sister to Lonhro. DUPONT (11), POINT OUT (2) and PIERRE CARDINNIGAN (1) all have claims. â– â– â– â– â– SAMMY CONQUERS ALL (9) is housed at Coffs Harbour by Angst's trainer Noel Mayfield-Smith. This son of Nick Moraitis's former iron horse Love Conquers All is on a hat-trick but better still, the first one was an easy one here at home in a Class 3 which he followed up with an away win on the Kensington track. Have seen SLIPPIN' JIMMY (5) do some really good things in the past, not least that super emphatic win here in a Bm74 on last year's Coffs Harbour Cup Day meeting. OAKFIELD DUKE (4) (Bullock) and LADY WARDELL (10) (Morgan) are well in this. Bet: Sammy Conquers All to win, quinella 5, 9, Daily Double 1st Leg 9, 2nd Leg 7 â– â– â– â– â– IT'S A KNOCKOUT (7) has a lot going for her but two things really stand out, for me anyway. One, she is a Group 3 placegetter over 1600m on the limit weight here, and two, barrier four for Ash Morgan is just a gift to the Dynamic Syndications mare. Granted it is not an out and out slam dunk, a horse like SIBAAQ (1) commands great respect and attention given his 96 benchmark rating alone. If there was a total blowout, it could be OSTRACISED (13). He is a local on a hat trick but can he run a mile? â– â– â– â– â– WILD SENSATION (7) has done more good than bad in her 10 starts. She beat Hell Of A Fox to win her maiden on his home turf down in Canberra back in April. Fast forward to the present and this Matthew Smith-trained filly led throughout for a big Class 1 win at Scone on July 11 beating handy locals Cresta Run and Pindorama. On the right trajectory. BEEBEE (8) is a last start winner here at the home track. He's got a great draw and a great jockey (Luke Rolls). WAHINE GALAXY (14) and Boambee Beach stay under notice.
