From Uyinene to Olorato: GBV cases that sparked a national outcry
As South Africa grapples with an alarmingly high rate of gender-based violence (GBV) incidents, numerous cases have sparked a widespread outrage and calls for urgent action.
Nine-hundred-and-fifty seven women were murdered between July and September 2024 and thousands more were victims of attempted murder.
The recent murder of Olorato Mongale has reignited the debate on GBV
Here are some notable cases that have shocked the nation.
1. Olorato Mongale, 30
What seemed to be an innocent date turned into a nightmare for Mongale. Her body was found near Lombardy West after she went on a date with her alleged killer. The man allegedly drove with the victim, killed her and dumped her body.
2. Uyinene Mrwetyana, 19
A University of Cape Town student was brutally raped and murdered inside a post office in 2019. She went to the post office to collect a parcel she had bought online.
3. Tshegofatso Pule, 28
Her heavily pregnant body, covered in blood, was found hanging from a tree after she was shot dead in June 2020 in Durban Deep, Roodepoort. She was eight months pregnant at the time. The police established that her boyfriend, Ntuthuko Shoba, hired a hitman to kill her. He was sentenced to life in prison in 2022.
4. Reeva Steenkamp, 29
A model and reality TV star who was shot and killed by her boyfriend, Oscar Pistorius, in 2013, claiming that he thought it was an intruder. The case drew international attention and raised questions about domestic violence and gun control.
5. Nosicelo Mtebeni, 23
The Fort Hare student was brutally killed and dismembered in August 2021 by her boyfriend. Her body parts were found in a suitcase near a dump site in East London
6. Karabo Mokoena, 22
The young woman was brutally murdered by her boyfriend Sandile Mantsoe who initially claimed Karabo committed suicide in April 2017. She went missing and her body was found a few days later burnt in a field in Lyndhurst, Johannesburg. Her case sparked widespread outrage and calls for justice.
7. Chesnay Keppler, 22
A crime prevention warden who was allegedly killed by her boyfriend, a police officer, in 2022.
8. Gontse Ntseza, 19
A murdered young woman whose body was found under a bridge in Hammanskraal in 2024 after going missing after a night out with friends.
9. Nomsa Jass, 26
Jass went missing after she left her place of work in Potchefstroom, North West. Her body was found in Carletonville in Gauteng.
10. Hannah Cornelius, 21
Cornelius, a Stellenbosch university student was abducted by a gang in Stellenbosch in May 2017 after a night out, which led to her being raped and murdered.

"It is with shock, sadness, and utter grief that the IFP announces the untimely passing of Mr Sithole, who was assassinated by unknown assailants. The Honourable KP Sithole was a member of the IFP's National Council and served as the Party's Deputy Chief Whip in Parliament." While details of his murder are still sketchy at the moment, the EFF in Gauteng through its provincial chairperson, Nkululeko Dunga also voiced its condemnation of the murder. "The EFF in Gauteng extend our heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and comrades of the IFP following the tragic and senseless Murder of Hon. Khethamabala Petros 'KP' Sithole MP. "Sithole, who was the IFP Deputy Chief Whip in Parliament, was gunned down in Katlehong on Gauteng's East Rand on Saturday evening. And in the same incident the Provincial Secretary of the IFP Alco Ngobese was shot and sustained injuries, and we wish him a speedy recovery. "The IFP has classified this tragic incident as an act of assassination which might be politically motivated. Political killings are unacceptable and undermine our democracy. We therefore condemn all acts of political violence and urge all parties to show maximum tolerance and respect for opposing views. Democracy must be built on peace, not violence," Dunga said. "We have lost a trusted patriot and a diligent leader of the IFP who joined the IFP in his youth and served in various party structures including being IFP Gauteng provincial chairperson," he said. Sithole also served as a Councilor in Ekurhuleni and thereafter served a brief stint in the Gauteng Legislature from 2009 to 2010. He was redeployed to the National Assembly in 2010. "The IFP is poorer today with Jobe's (Sithole) passing and South Africa has lost a good man who served his country par excellence," Hlengwa added. According to Gauteng police spokesperson, Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi it is reported that Sithole was killed after a group of unknown men had a meeting at the Buyafuthi Hostel in Katehong on Saturday. "At about 5.30pm, three unknown men passing by the meeting opened fire on the group. One person was declared dead on scene the while two more people were taken to hospital with gunshot injuries. One of the two injured was treated and discharged while the other one is still in hospital. The motive of the shooting is unknown at this stage, and no one has been arrested," said Nevhuhulwi.

Government directive on virginity testing sparks controversy in KwaZulu-Natal

Image: Supplied A cultural clash is looming again between government and Zulu culturists over the virginity testing of young girls in KwaZulu-Natal following the directive of the Commission for the Promotion and Protection of the Rights of Cultural, Religious and Linguistic Communities (CRL) which prevents the practice on girls below 16 years of age. The commission's chairperson Thoko Mkhwanazi-Xaluva met Social Development MEC Mbali Shinga last week and directed that the testing of maidens below 16 years of age was illegal and should be stopped, however, culturists have vowed to defy this. Dr Nomagugu Ngobese, the founder of Nombukhubulwane Institute, a cultural body advocating for the preservation of African cultural practice said the practice will continue and will not be stoped. Ngobese said the practice has helped to reduce sexual violence against children as the organisation conducts tests randomly. She said even perpetrators are scared to rape girl children who are being tested because they know testers will uncover if a child has been abused and that the practice has helped to reduce cases where young girls had been repeatedly raped and could not report this due to fear. 'We will not stop our practice and no one will dictate to us how we raise our kids. We are doing this in the best interest of our kids, the same interest the government claims to uphold. She also questioned the government's decision in allowing 12-year-olds to conduct an abortion of a pregnancy if those girls are too young for virginity testing. In the meeting between Mkhwanazi-Xaluva and Shinga, Mkhwanazi-Xaluva raised specific concerns about child protection gaps in religious settings and cultural practices, such as virginity testing. She said unlike schools, where staff are thoroughly vetted and screened, many religious spaces lack such safeguards, thus leaving children vulnerable. Mkhwanazi-Xaluva said her commission's constitutional mandate is to protect and promote the rights of cultural, religious, and linguistic communities while strengthening democracy and called on the provincial government to work together to ensure that children are protected from abuse and exploitation in all environments. 'Legislation clearly states that virginity testing may only be conducted on girls over the age of 16 who have provided informed consent. Test results must remain confidential, and marking girls on their foreheads is illegal," said Mkhwanazi-Xaluva Shinga also acknowledged the growing concern around gender-based violence, religious exploitation, and lack of accountability in certain faith-based institutions. She noted that partnerships such as these are essential for crafting effective, long-term strategies to protect vulnerable communities. 'We remain steadfast in our commitment to upholding the rights of children and promoting their safety, as enshrined in our Constitution,' she concluded. The commission's visit to the province came at time when mass virginity testing is set to start in preparation for the annual Reed Dance ceremony which is presided over by Zulu King Misizulu kaZwelithini. All maidens who attend the ceremony have to be tested before they are allowed to present their reeds to the king.

Image: X Olorato Mongale, the 30-year-old former Wits student who was killed after going on a date last Sunday has been described by her family as a fighter who fought to the end of her life. This is how her mother Basetsana Mongale described her daughter as she paid her last respects during an emotional send off as scores of mourners, including friends, relatives and community members gathered at the Bloemfontein City Hall for her funeral on Sunday. Last week police named three suspects linked to the killing including Fezile Ngubane, Philangenkosi Sibongokuhle Makhanya and Bongani Mthimkhulu. On Friday Makhanya shot at police, who returned fire and killed him at a residential complex in Amanzimtoti while Ngubane was cleared in the investigation after police established that he had also been a victim of Makhanya and Mthimkhulu. Government officials and political leaders also attended the funeral. "We might not understand the ways of life, but she fought. My daughter was extra careful and would not have allowed a total stranger to fetch her from her gate, I know that she is a fighter. "When I saw her at the government mortuary, I could see that my daughter fought; she fought until her nails broke off. We might not understand the ways of life but she fought," Basetsana said.
