The Delhi government will conduct an entrance test for Class 6 to 8 admissions in 33 CM SHRI schools, with applications open until August 15.
The Delhi government has announced that an entrance examination will be conducted for admissions to Classes 6 to 8 in 33 of the 75 newly shortlisted CM SHRI schools for the academic session 2025–26. The Directorate of Education (DoE) has issued detailed guidelines and named the entrance exam the CM SHRI Schools Admission Test 2025.
The CM SHRI schools, which have been designated as 'Specified Category' institutions under Section 2 of the Right to Education (RTE) Act, 2009, aim to transform existing government schools into model institutions. These schools will incorporate modern infrastructure and innovative teaching methods aligned with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.
According to the DoE guidelines, the admission test will follow a 'fair, transparent and merit-based selection process." Only students currently residing in Delhi and enrolled in Classes 6, 7 or 8 in any recognised Delhi-based school during the 2025–26 session will be eligible to apply.
At least 50 per cent of the total seats in each CM SHRI school will be reserved for students enrolled in government or government-aided schools in Delhi, including institutions under the DoE, MCD, NDMC, Kendriya Vidyalayas, and Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas.
The application process for the entrance test will be conducted online. The registration window will open on July 30 and remain active until August 15. Admit cards for eligible candidates will be released on August 23, while the entrance test is scheduled to be held on August 30 from 11 am to 1:30 pm.
As per the guidelines, the test will be an OMR-based, objective-type examination with no provision for negative marking. It will be conducted in both Hindi and English and will assess candidates across five sections: Hindi, English, General Awareness, Mental Ability, and Numerical Aptitude. The total duration of the exam will be 150 minutes, with additional time allotted for CWSN candidates as per prevailing norms.
The results of the entrance test will be declared on September 10, and all admissions will be finalised by September 15. The DoE has also confirmed that test centres will be established across various schools under its jurisdiction to ensure easy accessibility for students from all parts of the city.
The CM SHRI schools are expected to be inaugurated in September, an official said, as preparations for their operationalisation are underway. The initiative, announced earlier this year, aims to provide 'high-quality, future-ready education" in Delhi's government schools.
Earlier, Education Minister Ashish Sood had said that the government had provisionally shortlisted 75 schools to be developed under the CM SHRI scheme. Modelled after the Centre's PM SHRI schools, these institutions will follow the NEP 2020 and implement the National Curriculum Framework (NCF) 2023.
Officials added that these schools are being built with an emphasis on sustainability, designed to operate as zero-waste and solar-powered campuses. They will feature AI-enabled libraries, smart classrooms equipped with augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) tools, biometric attendance systems, smartboards, and robotics laboratories to foster innovation and creativity among students.
In another major shift, the Delhi government is phasing out the Delhi Board of School Education (DBSE). All schools currently affiliated with DBSE will now be transitioned to the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE).
Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta had earmarked ₹100 crore for the development of CM SHRI schools in her budget speech earlier this year.

Pigeons and protests in Mumbai: How kabootarkhanas are becoming a flashpoint in India's financial capital

Sunday morning saw a protest at Gateway of India in Mumbai over pigeons and their right to co-exist with humans. The peaceful march from the Jain temple in Colaba to the national monument — where pigeons are part of the landscape — was only the latest chapter in a growing controversy over pigeon-feeding stations in the city. Animal rights protesters, led by the Jain community, participate in a protest against the closure of pigeon shelters or feeding stations in Mumbai, at the Gateway of India on Sunday. (Anshuman Poyrekar/HT Photo) It came a day after workers of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) covered a 'kabootarkhana' (pigeon spot/shelter) in Dadar by erecting a bamboo structure. And it was almost exactly a month after pigeons — widely dubbed now as 'rats of the avian world' for being disease carriers — came up in the Maharashtra legislative council. The police have also been in on the action, having filed an FIR against an unknown person for feeding pigeons — reportedly the first such FIR. Laws related to 'public nuisance' and 'disobedience to order duly promulgated by a public servant', which can lead to imprisonment for up to a year, have been used. Some activists have, meanwhile, approached the court to protect 'heritage' feeding spots. On Sunday, protesters from the Jain community held up placards carrying couplets and slogans in Marathi and Hindi, asking, 'What was the fault of the poor birds, that you destroyed their homes?' But health experts link the rising population of pigeons with a rise in respiratory illnesses caused by their droppings and feathers. In the legislative council last month, one of the members cited a death in her family due to a lung disease linked with pigeons. The state government thereafter directed the municipal authorities to take strict action against unauthorised kabootarkhanas across the city, HT reported. The issue may seem limited to Mumbai, but is part of a wider debate on urbanisation and defining some species as 'pests'. The population of pigeons in India has increased rapidly, as per the 2023 State of India's Birds report. The report says the pigeon has 'successfully adapted to live in human habitation to nest on human structures, and to feed on whatever humans provide'. Besides lung issues, pigeon droppings cause fungal infections that can reach the brain, research has shown.
