INST Mohali develops AI-powered solar filter to purify 99% toxic wastewater

In a significant breakthrough for Punjab's water pollution crisis, scientists at the Institute of Nano Science and Technology (INST), Mohali, have developed an AI-powered, solar-assisted filtration system capable of removing up to 99% of hazardous chemicals from wastewater.
As the state continues to grapple with the discharge of 764 million litres of untreated industrial and domestic sewage daily into the Sutlej via Ludhiana's heavily polluted Buddha Nullah, the innovation offers a ray of hope.
'Our technique targets highly toxic industrial dyes like Congo Red (CR) and Methylene Blue (MB), commonly used in textile and pharmaceutical industries,' lead researcher Dr. Aviru Basu told The Indian Express. 'These dyes not only discolor water but also cause skin disorders, respiratory problems, and long-term health issues.'
The filtration system uses a hybrid 3D-printed scaffold made from biodegradable polylactic acid (PLA), coated with bismuth ferrite (BiFeO₃) — a solar-activated catalyst. 'Unlike traditional wastewater treatments like electrochemical or ozone processes, which are expensive and energy-intensive, our technology is low-cost, eco-friendly, reusable, and powered by renewable energy,' said Dr. Basu.
The innovation, called Piezo-Photocatalysis, activates the catalyst using a combination of solar light and gentle vibrations, allowing it to function effectively even under changing weather conditions. Lab results showed a 98.9% removal of Congo Red and 74.3% of Methylene Blue, surpassing many existing advanced water treatment methods.
The system was successfully tested on real wastewater samples collected from a large industrial drainage point in Jaipur, where over 100 factories discharge effluents. 'The results were very satisfactory,' said Dr. Basu.
To boost performance further, the team integrated Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) — a machine learning model — to accurately predict how the system would behave under different environmental and pollutant conditions. 'Our AI model has up to 99% prediction accuracy,' Dr. Basu added.
INST is now collaborating with plant biotechnologist Dr. Adriza Basu of Chandigarh University to improve the system's long-term sustainability. The project, funded by the Department of Science and Technology (DST), has been published in Nano Energy, a journal by Elsevier.
Dr. Basu believes the scalable technology could be a game-changer for rural and peri-urban areas. 'If the Punjab government adopts this, we could safely discharge treated water into the Sutlej. It would be a giant leap toward cleaning Buddha Nullah and addressing the state's toxic water crisis,' he said.

Tetrapods are four-legged concrete blocks designed to protect coastlines. You may have noticed the unusual star-shaped concrete blocks along the edge of the sea at Mumbai's Marine Drive. While they might appear to be random pieces of art, these structures actually play a crucial role in protecting the coastline from the strong waves of the Arabian Sea. These blocks are called tetrapods. Standing guard along Marine Drive for years, there are over 6,000 tetrapods spread along the shoreline, according to The Indian Express. They protect the promenade and nearby buildings from erosion and wave damage. So, What Exactly Are Tetrapods And How Do They Work? Tetrapods are heavy concrete blocks with four legs sticking out. First used in France in the late 1940s, they are arranged in an interlocking but porous pattern to slow down waves and disperse their force, which reduces the damage caused by strong tides. As per The Indian Express, each tetrapod can weigh around two tonnes, sometimes up to 10 tonnes. The unique design allows water to flow around them rather than hit a solid wall, which reduces the wave's impact on the shore. Their interlocking placement also helps them stay stable during storms. Marine Drive's tetrapods were first installed in the late 1990s to protect the reclaimed land along South Mumbai. In January, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) had approved a proposal to replace the old tetrapods along Marine Drive. According to a Mid-day report, the existing ones were installed between 1960 and 1965 and partially replaced between 1982 and 2002. They were made using M20-grade cement and had a lifespan of about 40 years. That lifespan has now ended. Over the years, some tetrapods were damaged by Cyclone Nisarga, and others had to be removed during the Coastal Road project. 'It's not feasible to shift the old tetrapods back into position. Since their lifespan is over, we have decided to replace them," a civic official told Mid-day. Made with high-grade M40 cement, these new tetrapods are designed to last 100 years. The BMC had reportedly allocated Rs 43.61 crore for the project. 'The new tetrapods will offer enhanced protection due to the use of stronger materials," the official added How Tetrapod Removal Affected Marine Drive Residents In 2022, during the Coastal Road construction, authorities removed a three-kilometre stretch of tetrapods along Marine Drive. This left parts of the iconic promenade more exposed to the waves of the Arabian Sea. Residents of two sea-facing buildings on Marine Drive started noticing unusual vibrations inside their homes. They connected these tremors to the stronger wave activity hitting the unprotected coastline. They told the BMC in a letter: 'I would like to bring to your urgent notice that for the last few days, many residents of Shreeniketan and Gobind Mahal buildings (sea-facing buildings between G&F Road on Marine Drive) have been feeling vibrations. The vibrations come for 1 second and in intervals for a period of ~30-60 minutes in the afternoons. These vibrations feel like tremors akin to an earthquake. Many of us searched if there was an earthquake in Mumbai. Now imagine earthquake-like tremors 20-30 times an hour." Although the BMC did not directly state that the removal of the tetrapods caused these vibrations, they agreed to take action. Hyderabad: Japanese major Toshiba has lined up Rs347-cr investment for expansion plan including a new EHVT power transformer plant, a CRGO Core Processing Centre and a Surge Arrester Unit, all located at Rudraram in Sangareddy district. Telangana IT and Industries Minister Duddilla Sridhar Babu on Friday laid the foundation stone for the Rs177 crore expansion of the Extra High Voltage Transformer (EHVT) plant, while inaugurating the two new state-of-the-art facilities worth Rs65 crore and Rs105 crore, respectively. Sridhar Babu highlighted Telangana's rapid growth in the industrial sector. He said: 'The State is projected to achieve an industrial output of Rs2.77 lakh crore in 2024–25, with manufacturing contributing nearly 48 per cent of that. Merchandise exports worth Rs1 lakh crore have already been recorded in just nine months. Telangana's GSDP growth stands at 8.2 per cent, well above the national average, reflecting our strategic focus on economic development.' Domestic electricity demand has been increasing and it's indicating expansion of economy. With the demand for electricity expected to double in India by 2040, Telangana is aligning its industrial development with the country's future energy needs. 'The Economic Survey 2024–25 projects a surge in domestic electricity demand. To meet this, we're aggressively attracting investments in clean and renewable energy,' the Minister said. He noted that under the State's Clean and Green Energy Policy 2025, Telangana has already attracted Rs 29,000 crore in investments and is working toward adding 20,000 MW of renewable capacity by 2030.

COMBAT dengue: India-EU science alliance takes aim at dengue in global health push

Dengue fever affects nearly 400 million people annually, with India among the countries most severely impacted. Now, as part of the India-EU partnership under the Horizon Europe program, the COMBAT dengue initiative will soon be launched to tackle the world's most rapidly spreading viral infection. This project brings together top researchers, clinicians, and technologists across both continents. The Swedish Karolinska Institute in Stockholm coordinates the COMBAT research initiative. The acronym stands for 'Advancing Pandemic Preparedness Innovative Multidisciplinary Strategies for COMBATing Severe Dengue'. Dr Ujjwal Neogi, Project Coordinator, Karolinska Institute, told The Indian Express, 'Infectious diseases don't respect borders. The aim is to uncover the underlying mechanisms of severe dengue and reduce the disease burden. This can be done through innovation, precision medicine, and translational research, which will contribute to saving lives, protecting the brain, and strengthening preparedness for future outbreaks.' 'It is not just a response to dengue, but also a critical advancement in global health, integrating fundamental science with clinical and societal applications,' Dr Neogi further said. Scientists involved in the project said that while dengue fever has primarily occurred in tropical and subtropical regions, the risk of contracting the disease is also rising in Europe due to climate change. At present, India bears a significant share of the dengue burden, and as per data from the National Centre for Vector Borne Diseases Control, close to 12 lakh lab-confirmed dengue cases and over 1,650 deaths have been reported since 2019 till March this year. However, experts like Dr Swarup Sarkar of the World Health Organization, who is advising the COMBAT project, said that the dengue problem is compounded by underreporting in India and other South Asian countries. 'Pending vaccine trial results and good clinical protocols, there is a need for biomarkers to identify potential severe cases that would be helpful to reduce adverse outcomes due to dengue,' Dr Sarkar said. Led by Prof Arindam Maitra, National Institute of Biomedical Genomics, Kalyani, West Bengal, clinical samples will be collected from Artemis Hospital and Max Hospital in New Delhi, and Kasturba Medical College Hospital in Mangaluru. Scientists said that these sites, located in regions with high dengue prevalence, are central to generating critical scientific insights that will not only strengthen India's outbreak response capabilities but also contribute to global knowledge alongside cohorts in Guatemala. They also said that the data and findings will support the European Union's efforts to enhance pandemic preparedness against emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases. Scientists said what sets COMBAT apart is its integration of high-end, innovative, and affordable technologies seldom seen in virus research. The project employs brain organoids, miniature, lab-grown human brain-like tissues, to investigate how dengue invades the nervous system. Advanced super-resolution and photonic microscopy allow scientists to visualise the virus in action within living cells, while artificial intelligence sifts through complex patient data to discover biomarkers that could predict severe disease outcomes. The approach is a fusion of virology, physics, engineering, and data science, emblematic of the EU-India strategy to position science at the crossroads of innovation and accessibility, according to scientists. They also noted that COMBAT dengue also comes at a vital moment in India-EU relations, following the renewal of the Science and Technology Cooperation Agreement until 2030. Though dengue is the immediate target, the platform being developed has wider ambitions. The technologies and workflows created under COMBAT – from multi-modal imaging to AI-integrated biological pipelines – are designed to be rapidly adaptable to other pathogens.
