Bill would rename a portion of US-127 after Jackson Tuskegee Airman
Under the proposed bill, the section of U.S.-127 between mile markers 39 and 40 near the I-94 interchange would be named after 2nd. Lieutenant Roosevelt Stiger, a Tuskegee Airman and Purple Heart recipient who remains unaccounted for.
'It is a real privilege to advocate on behalf of a true American hero,' said State Rep. Kathy Schmaltz, who represents Jackson County and introduced the bill. '2nd Lt. Stiger served our country with courage, broke barriers, and gave his life fighting for freedom. This memorial is a small but meaningful way we can ensure his legacy lives on in the community he once called home.'
Schmaltz says Stiger was born in Tennessee in 1919 and moved to Jackson with his family during his childhood. He trained as a pilot through the Tuskegee Aviation Cadet program. He graduated in 1944 and was the 99th Fighter Squadron, 332nd Fighter Group of the U.S. Army Air Forces.
According to the , on Oct. 7, 1944, Stiger was piloting one of 68 fighters on a bomber escort mission over the Adriatic Sea. Around 10 minutes before reaching land, Stiger reported his oxygen was low, and he and his flight leader flew down to a lower altitude, almost colliding due to low visibility.
When Stiger appeared to be heading into the water, his flight lead ordered him to pull up. Within seconds of the two planes becoming level with each other, Stiger's plane went into a steep dive and crashed into the water.
After the crash, the flight leader attempted to radio Stiger while circling the crash location, but could not contact him. He was not recovered, and remains unaccounted for, memorialized on the Walls of the Missing at the Sicily-Rome American Cemetery in Nettuno, Italy.
Schmaltz says the road dedication proposal has seen strong local support, and specifically credited student researchers from the Heritage Center at Jackson College for bringing attention to Stiger's story.
'These students have shown remarkable initiative and respect for our shared history,' Schmaltz said. 'Their work has helped shine a light on a Jackson native who made the ultimate sacrifice. It's because of their efforts that this legislation has taken shape, and I'm incredibly grateful.'
HB-4145 was approved by committee and has advanced to the full House for consideration.

See where this Green Bay building ranked in survey of 'ugliest' public buildings in U.S.
Green Bay City Hall, built in 1956 at 100 N. Jefferson St., is considered the 33rd "ugliest" public building in America, according to a 3,012-person survey conducted in July by a New Jersey real estate brokerage firm. The New Jersey Real Estate Network asked 3,003 respondents "based on age, gender, and geography" to give their opinions on what America's most unattractive civic buildings were, compiling a ranking of 100 buildings. It concluded, "There's something oddly democratic about this list. These aren't tourist sites or architectural darlings ... They're workhorses, not showpieces. But as this survey makes clear, design still matters to residents." Only the top five buildings got blurbs detailing their perceived unattractiveness with the Flint, Michigan, Municipal Center at No. 1. There was no accompanying description or explanation for Green Bay City Hall, the sole building from Wisconsin on the list, slotted 33rd place. But from the explanations that were given for the top five places, a common architectural theme ran through the buildings that were supposedly harsh on the eyes: boxy-silhouettes cut from stark, straight lines with little details or ornamentation. Such a description describes Green Bay's steel-framed, brick-clad City Hall in a site file to the National Register of Historic Places available through the Wisconsin Historical Society. "The architectural firm of Foeller, Schober, Berners, and Jahn was responsible for the contemporary, box-like style design of the building," read the site file. The building was constructed after a 1953 fire in the old City Hall Annex left several city departments, state offices, civic groups, and some renters homeless, a 1957 Green Bay Press-Gazette article reported. To make way for the new building, the former City Hall — built in 1901 in the colonial revival style popular at the time with an arched entrance, ionic columns, and a bell tower — was razed in late 1956 and became the parking lot for the current City Hall, according to the Wisconsin Historical Society. It stands six stories tall, the first story made of polished red granite. Almost all window openings in the upper floors are identical, and the windows are in regular grids on the sides of the building. "The building ... is an excellent example of mid-century, contemporary style architecture with high-end material finishes," the site file concludes, referring to the mid-century modernist style popular in American federal buildings from 1950 to 1979 for their lack of ornamentation, flat roofs, smooth walls, massive scale, exposed walls meant to project functionality and simplicity. Correll, Esther N. 1937-2025 St. Joseph, Mo.
Esther N. Correll, 88, St. Joseph, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, Aug. 14, 2025. She was born Jan. 1, 1937, to Oliver and Carrie L. (Wigger) Thornton, in Clarksdale, Missouri. She was married to James Kennard Correll on Feb. 26, 1972. Their union was a testament to their shared values until James's passing on Feb. 13, 2002. Esther spent 34 years as a facilities specialist at AT&T, where her contributions were invaluable. She enjoyed crocheting. Her culinary skills were no less impressive, as her kitchen was a place of warmth and delicious aromas. Esther loved taking leisurely rides to Jamesport, Missouri. Those who knew Esther will fondly recall how her presence felt like a safe harbor – she was a steadfast presence, always ready to lend a hand or a listening ear. She had a deep faith in the Lord. Her love for houseplants and flowers was a testament to her nurturing spirit. She was preceded in death by her parents and husband; children, Anna Marie Kinney and Larry Correll; great-grandchildren, Haylee Bills and Brenden Burnett; and numerous siblings. Survivors include her children, Ronnie Moss (Paula), Randy Moss (Kim), Peggy Wood (Michael), and Kerry Gann; 12 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. To the Mom With a Teen Who Just Doesn't Seem to Care
I watched my son walk to my car last Friday after school. I love picking him up; there's something about seeing him with his friends and the visceral relief you see in their smiles. It's nostalgic since I remember feeling the same way, but I love watching him and seeing him in a space different than the one he's in when he's with me and when he doesn't think I'm paying attention. My son doesn't care how he dresses and his room is a mess As he gets closer, I notice something smeared all over his white T-shirt. I have no idea what it is, but I'm sure he doesn't care. He slept at his father's last night, and as I ask him what's all over his shirt, his brother and sister chime in. 'He went to school like that,' they tell me simultaneously. Of course, I could say something to his dad about it and fault him for letting his son arrive at school in such a state, but I don't. I know how their morning went well because I've had many confrontations with him about his clothing if he's taken a shower or done his homework on time, and he doesn't care. Not even a little bit. It doesn't bother him if he walks into school with stained clothing, an oversized whitehead on his nose, or the same pants he's worn the last three days in a row. I don't understand it, and we had many throwdowns about this and other subjects at a very early hour. He keeps his room looking like a nightmare, and when I tell him to clean it up, it consists of him bringing down a sink full of dirty dishes and throwing everything else under the bed. He doesn't try hard in school He doesn't try hard in school despite being an intelligent kid who is excellent in math and science. At 15, I can't read his penmanship, and he doesn't put any effort into projects — he doesn't care. I've tried; I've taken him to counseling; I've loved him hard, and I've backed off. And then… There have been moments I've screamed at him, trying to get across how much I want him to care, how much I want him to live up to his potential, but it doesn't help. Nothing does. If your teen doesn't seem to care, you're not alone I'm telling you this because I want you to know that you aren't alone if you have a teen who doesn't give a flip about many things. I know so many teenagers out there are thriving and thinking about college and how many goals they will score in tonight's game, and then there's your kid. They are good and kind and can be sweet, and, of course, you love them — it's guttural and huge. But you wish they would care. You wish they'd shower more and not treat their room like a junkyard. You wish they would live up to their potential in school and play ball because they have skills they are hiding. You've tried it all, and nothing you do works, and it brings you to tears. You wonder if it's something you've done, if you've pushed too hard or not enough. But I have to tell you; it is not just your child. So many moms are feeling this way despite what they post on social media or what they see on the field. Those are snippets from a highlight reel; it's certainly not the whole story. I know my son has gifts; he's found a few but not all of them. I know he will in time; he's not ready yet, and I've realized I can't squeeze them out of him. I'm not giving up on him I'm not giving up; I've committed myself that I'd let him be because what I'm doing now, what his father is doing now, isn't working. We are both baffled; we both did well in high school and couldn't wait to go to college. Honestly, I wouldn't have been caught dead walking around high school in a stained shirt, and if my room looked like his, I'd cry. We raised him to be a good kid and a good adult; you have raised your kid to be a good human, too. I know you have. That doesn't stop because all our efforts are being blatantly ignored, but maybe we can give ourselves a damn break and realize we can't force them to care about things they don't. We want it to happen organically, of course, and I don't think it's going to if I keep shoving cleanliness, organization, working harder in school, and acne pads down his throat. My son is lovely. He doesn't skip school; he gets his work done by the skin of his teeth, and he takes care of me when I get sick since his father moved out. But he doesn't want to play sports; he couldn't care less if he was wearing clean clothes or has deodorant on or if all his friends are in the National Honor Society, and he could be too if he tried just a bit more. He lacks desire and motivation. My son doesn't care about many things right now, and if your child doesn't either, let's try and remember (together because I need support here) there are worse things. As his mom, I've worried other people will notice his nonchalant attitude and think it means I haven't shown up for him. Maybe you're worried about that too. Perhaps you are worried about it at this very moment. But mother to mother, let's let go of that thought and the fact they could be doing so much more with their life right now despite our support and our nagging and focus on the positive things they bring to the table because there are many.
