From Krispy Kreme to GoPro, has meme-stock trading frenzy returned?
But the latest meme-stock rally could be even bigger than its predecessor four years ago, when investors piled into recognizable but unloved stocks, such as the video games retailer GameStop and the movie theatre chain AMC, according to the founder of the Reddit forum that helped whip up the frenzy.
Retailer Kohl's, camera firm GoPro, fast-food chain Wendy's and doughnut chain Krispy Kreme each staged rapid rallies this week, driven by abrupt surges in trading volume reminiscent of the the meme-stock craze of 2021, when social media memes boosted a collection of struggling stocks, triggering extraordinary and volatile leaps in value.
Actress Sydney Sweeney helped bring clothing retailer American Eagle Outfitters into the mania after it was announced the Euphoria and White Lotus star would front the brand's latest marketing campaign. The company's shares surged about 10% in trading on Thursday.
Meme stocks are 'about to leap-frog in size and scope and scale, so that retail traders are going to redefine what matters', according to Jaime Rogozinski, founder of the wallstreetbets Reddit forum behind many of the volatile rallies.
'The world of finance is clearly changing, with blockchain technologies encroaching, and AI agents that trade on their own,' he said. 'And the collective of retail traders is adapting along with it.'
Rogozinski founded wallstreetbets in 2012, but said Reddit ousted him as a moderator in 2020. His bid to sue the social media company for trademark infringement was dismissed by the US court of appeals for the ninth circuit last month.
The forum's users home in on stocks and share their own research. 'It's a decentralization of power of who can be financial analyst,' said Noor Al, a moderator on wallstreetbets. 'Great ideas can now come from anyone, anywhere.
'We're seeing the power of retail push stocks, sometimes to the tune of billions of dollars, through the power of ideas, the power of community and the power of the people,' he added.
The meme-stock craze of 2021, which produced stars such as Roaring Kitty, was a product of the Covid era, when many amateur traders were stuck at home and flush with pandemic stimulus cash.
Whether this latest frenzy produces similar winners is not yet clear. Kohl's finished the week up 32%, GoPro was up 66% and Krispy Kreme was up 41%. The rallies show some investors are willing to take on more risk, as stocks scale record highs and the market, dominated by big tech, becomes harder to beat.
Often, meme-stock bets are unbound from economic fundamentals, as investors move to support a brand for romantic or ideological reasons. Donald Trump's Trump Media & Technology Group, home to Truth Social, is valued at more than $5bn on quarterly revenue of about $1m.
The wallstreetbets ethos 'has always to some extent been about flaunting and exploiting the ironies, relevance or irrelevance' of the stock market, said Rogozinski, who pointed to Wendy's, the hamburger chain, as a good example. 'Wendy's has always been a meme that goes back a decade. It brings a smile to my face, because on Reddit there's always been this thing where they say: 'Sir, this is a Wendy's.'
'It's an inside joke, and I don't even get where it started. It's just a meme,' he added. The stock's fleeting rise – it rallied 10% in two days, but finished the week broadly flat – shows some retail investors do not necessarily care about the typical factors that drive the market, such as tariffs and war in the Middle East. 'It's this ability for us to almost make fun of the financial system.'

Long-term institutional players will always get the last laugh, Rogozinski conceded, because prices will return to normal valuations. 'But in the short term there's lot of money to be had with this volatility, and the fact that stocks are able to move up and down with such ease is but a mere showcase for how the financial system needs a facelift in relevancy.'
While current market conditions do not replicate the low interest rates and retail investor buoyancy of the Covid era, market records and a robust economy have made meme stocks attractive once again for some. 'You see all these indications where this is full-blown meme mania,' Brent Kochuba, founder of derivatives-data firm SpotGamma, told Bloomberg.
'The macro economic environment really favors the retail and speculative plays,' agreed Al. 'I think were only going to see more speculation and excitement. It's a good time to tune in, because retail players can react and provide insight faster.'
Days traders are not necessarily bothered by a company's financial performance, said Rogozinski. 'You have this activist, elective investor who is saying, 'I don't care what the financial statements look like, I don't care what the discounted cashflow is, I like the food, I like the video-game store, I like the meme. So dude, you can go back to Excel spreadsheets if you want, but I really like the chicken tenders,'' he said.
There is now a 'third component' to investment, beyond supply and demand, he claimed, 'which is, 'dude, I don't care if you think it's going to go up or not, or if they have assets or liabilities. I care about this company and I'm going to help it out. I'm going to go buy my jeans from American Eagle.''

Lauren Sanchez pens heartfelt message to pal Katy Perry one month after Orlando Bloom split
has posted an emotional message to her good friend Katy Perry. Sanchez took to her Instagram Stories on Tuesday to congratulate Perry on a sold-out show at Madison Square Garden, which she played on August 11, and share her heartbreak over missing the monumental concert. She reposted a segment about Perry that aired on CBS Mornings, which shared a recap of the evening, and, of course, mentioned that Perry's fellow Blue Origin astronaut and journalist Gayle King was there for the sold-out show. 'So sad I missed it... but see you soon @katyperry,' Sanchez wrote in white text over the top of the clip. It's unclear whether or not Sanchez will be attending another one of Perry's shows, but she's set to take the stage in Miami, where Sanchez and her husband Jeff Bezos reside, on August 23. The two appear to be extremely close friends, as Perry was a part of Blue Origin's first all-female flight alongside Sanchez and King. The women, along with civil rights activist Amanda Nguyen, former rocket scientist Aisha Bowe and filmmaker Kerianne Flynn, ventured to space together in April. However, Perry did not attend Sanchez's over-the-top Venetian wedding to Bezos in June, though her recent ex, Orlando Bloom, did. Bloom was even seen with a mystery lady during the luxurious event; soon after, they confirmed their split. During the wedding, Perry, who was across the globe in Australia due to her tour, took to Instagram to share a series of snaps of herself with her arm wrapped around a quokka in a photo dump that she captioned: 'mood: Quokka.' Quick to share a sweet message of support at the time, Sanchez commented: 'We miss you Katy,' with a heart. And it looks like the newlywed isn't a stranger to expressing her feelings on Instagram. On Monday, Sanchez said that she was feeling 'heartbroken' but 'proud' as she marked an emotional milestone dropping her son Evan Whitesell at The University of Miami for his first year of college. She took to Instagram to share a sweet photo of Evan putting together a piece of furniture in his dorm. 'Dropped off Evan at college today. 18 years of early mornings, late night snacks and family dinners... and then there he was building his own dorm cabinet,' Sanchez wrote on top of the photo. 'A small thing but in that moment I saw the start of his next chapter. Proud. Heartbroken. Grateful,' she concluded. She also shared a photo of Evan when he was just a few years old to her Instagram Stories later that evening. Sanchez shares son Evan with her ex-husband, Patrick Whitesell. She also shares 17-year-old daughter Ella with Patrick, as well as son Nikko Gonzalez, 24, with ex Tony Gonzalez. Last year, Sanchez revealed that Whitesell had been accepted to The University of Miami and would be studying business there.

Sam Altman and Elon Musk face off in race to link our brains with AI
The rivalry between two of the world's most powerful technology billionaires is moving into a new arena — the race to link human minds directly with machines. Sam Altman, chief executive of OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, was once an ally of Elon Musk, the Tesla and SpaceX boss. Now the former partners are preparing to face off in the fast-developing field of brain–computer interfaces (BCIs). These systems typically use artificial intelligence to translate brain activity into commands a computer can follow. They have enabled people with paralysis to control devices using only their thoughts. Advocates believe BCIs will one day allow humans to merge with advanced AI. Musk's company, Neuralink, began testing its technology on patients in the US last year and recently gained approval for a trial in Britain, its first in Europe. Altman is now backing a rival, Merge Labs, which aims to harness recent advances in AI to make BCIs faster and more capable, according to the Financial Times. In 2015 the pair launched OpenAI together when Musk provided much of the capital to launch the venture. They fell out three years later when Musk quit the board after disputes over how it would operate. Since then, they have built competing AI empires while publicly trading barbs Musk attempted to block OpenAI's transformation from a non-profit entity to a profit-seeking business. BCIs are drawing interest from governments as well as tech moguls. In the UK, the Advanced Research and Invention Agency (Aria), a government body, is exploring their potential as part of a broader mission to fund science that could change the world. In China, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology has unveiled its own BCI device, Neo, intended to restore hand movement in paralysed patients. Neuralink is widely seen as being at the forefront of the field. Its coin-sized implant is designed to sit inside a small opening in the skull, with flexible electrode 'threads' extending into the brain to monitor the electrical activity of cells. An AI system then decodes those signals into information that can be used to control external devices. The company is also developing a surgical robot to carry out the procedure. Last year it implanted a device in its first human volunteer, Noland Arbaugh, who was paralysed from the shoulders down in a diving accident. Using the implant, he was able to move a computer cursor and play video games, an experience he likened to 'using the force' in a nod to Star Wars. While striking, this was not the first demonstration of a mind-driven technology. In the early 2000s, American scientists showed that monkeys implanted with neural interfaces could control robotic limbs through their thoughts. Human trials since then have allowed paralysed people to send emails, make purchases online and operate robotic devices — all without physical movement. In some cases, BCIs have been used to send information back towards the brain — allowing, for instance, a paralysed person to regain a sense of touch through a robotic hand. Musk said he wanted to go much further, including restoring sight to the blind and enabling quadriplegics to regain 'full-body functionality' — goals many researchers say could be decades away, if they are achievable at all. His ultimate ambition is a mass-market 'general population device' linking human minds directly to powerful computers, allowing 'symbiosis with artificial intelligence'. One industry figure who has discussed the matter with Musk said he viewed this as necessary to prevent superhuman AI from running out of control. Altman seems to share a similar long-term vision. In a blog post this year he wrote that 'high-bandwidth brain–computer interfaces' were on the horizon. Neuralink, which was founded in 2016, recently raised $650 million in a deal that valued the company at $9 billion. Altman, who had previously invested in the company, now appears to be positioning Merge Labs to challenge it directly. According to the Financial Times, Merge Labs is seeking funding at a valuation of about $850 million, with OpenAI's ventures arm expected to provide a large portion of an initial $250 million round. Altman is expected to help launch the project alongside Alex Blania, who runs Worldcoin, an eyeball-scanning digital ID project also backed by the OpenAI chief Neuralink said last month that it had received regulatory and ethics approvals to begin its first clinical study in the UK. The GB-Prime trial will be run at University College London Hospitals and Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. It will test the company's BCI in people with severe paralysis. The trial will involve patients with conditions such as motor neurone disease, spinal cord injuries and other neurological disorders, assessing whether they can use the device to control computers and other digital systems by thought alone.

Butterfly theme, Nicola's dress & Instagram snaps… all Brooklyn & Nicola Peltz's savage wedding renewal digs at Beckhams
GAZING adoringly into each other's eyes, the secret 'second wedding' of Nicola Peltz and Brooklyn Beckham may be their most savage move yet. The nuptials, to which none of the Beckhams were invited, have been labelled 'deliberately provocative' and straight out of 'the Prince Harry manual'. 8 8 8 And it could be the snub that severs Brooklyn's ties with his famous family, including parents David and Victoria, once and for all. It would seem that every part of the couple's vow renewal — from the butterfly theme to the chosen officiator and the dress, which Nicola splashed all over Instagram — was a blow to Posh, Becks and their other kids Romeo, Cruz and Harper. They will need to rely on cringeworthy 'wedding' snaps posted online for a glimpse of the hype on Brooklyn's big day, including one photo featuring a topless Nicola with her mum Claudia Heffner. In it, the 'bride' wears only a pair of skimpy knickers and presses her boobs against her former fashion model mother's back. One follower said it gave her 'the total ick' and looked 'more like a mum & daughter OnlyFans shoot'. It was captioned with clinking champagne glass emojis and six swans, which symbolise wisdom, love and grace. Some suspect it could be a veiled dig at the Beckhams. 'No way back' Conspiracy theorists reckon it might reference Brothers Grimm fairytale The Six Swans, in which a king's daughter is forced to remain silent for six years to free her siblings from a witch's spell. That story of love, sacrifice, perseverance and the power of inner strength against the odds is, according to some, similar to Nicola and Brooklyn's situation. Others believe the butterfly theme at the couple's reception could hold meaning as it traditionally symbolises rebirth, transformation and freedom — hinting that the Beckham chapter is firmly closed and there is no way back. Watch the moment Brooklyn Beckham 'proposes' to Nicola Peltz before vow renewal And it certainly seems the road for a return could be blocked, with all of Brooklyn's nearest and dearest noticeably absent from the lavish vows do at the Peltzes' Westchester County mansion. Nepo baby pals Rocco Ritchie, Jack Ramsay and Anais Gallagher were also missing from the guest list. Not even Brooklyn's adored godfather Sir Elton John, who tried to act as peacekeeper, was there. Instead, it was Peltzes galore, including Nicola's six brothers, and surprising invitees including A-list actor Adrien Brody, fashion designer Alexander Wang and Katy Perry's hair colourist Daniel Moon. Fans noted the awkward array of pals and that the groom wasn't even centre-stage in one picture, writing: 'Brooklyn looks like a guest at his own 'second wedding'.' In fact, the only 'friend' there seemed to be Jeremy Clerc, who owns an assisted living business and featured in a 2020 Instagram post captioned, 'love you guys'. So it appears to be a case of out with the old UK pals, and in with the rich red, white and blue. It's a clear sign of who Brooklyn, 26, now prioritises and considers his new inner circle. PR guru Mark Borkowski tells The Sun: 'He's swapped the Brit pack tribal connections for Nicola's billionaire bubble. 'It's a move straight from the Prince Harry manual — ditch the old circle, live in your spouse's world and curate a new reality.' Tensions have escalated between the Peltz-Beckhams and Brooklyn's family since the couple first tied the knot in a lavish £3million affair in Palm Beach, Florida, in 2022. A source told Entertainment Tonight that Nicola, 30, was 'thrilled to marry Brooklyn' again on August 2 'because their wedding didn't go the way she imagined due to family drama'. This was the final kick in the teeth for David and Victoria. It feels cruel and spiteful. This is no longer a game. It's gone beyond all that A source It followed claims that Victoria hijacked the first dance at the original nuptials after Marc Anthony, who was performing at the event, invited her on to the stage — referring to her as 'the most beautiful woman in the room'. The source added: 'This time, they didn't have to deal with outside opinions on what Nicola wore, first dance issues or general struggles to control things.' The insider claimed the couple 'focused on their own happiness' instead of trying to 'make everyone happy'. But Brooklyn's family did not know a thing about the renewal until it featured on a US news site, according to another source. 'This was the final kick in the teeth for David and Victoria,' they said. 'It feels cruel and spiteful. 'This is no longer a game. It has gone beyond all that.' 8 8 The Beckhams now 'see no way back' and question whether the couple will 'revert to Peltz' and ditch their surname altogether, the source revealed. Brooklyn is incredibly close with his wife's brood and even had the renewal officiated by her billionaire father Nelson, 83 — said to be 'heartbreaking' for David, who feels replaced. They are ostracising Brooklyn's family in another push away. They seem to be saying, 'There is no way back' Behavioural psychologist Jo Hemmings Nicola's captions on two of a stream of pictures focusing on the occasion included, 'this day meant so much to us' and, 'only love', which deepened the wound even further. 'Imagine being the parents of Brooklyn and seeing this, so heartbreaking,' one follower posted after seeing the snaps. Behavioural psychologist Jo Hemmings says the service and subsequent pic-sharing looked like a 'deliberate provocative gesture'. She told The Times: 'They are ostracising Brooklyn's family in another push away. They seem to be saying, 'There is no way back'.' In fact, neither Nicola nor Brooklyn has extended an olive branch this year in spite of peacemaking attempts by David. They did not wish either of his parents a happy birthday on social media, but gushed, 'we love you' on Nelson's big day in June. And they did not even congratulate David on his much yearned-for knighthood. In fact, the last photo featuring the couple with the Beckhams was shared on Boxing Day. In the eight months since, Nicola has posted a total of 415 pictures and videos — not one including Victoria, David or any of Brooklyn's siblings. There was no, 'You were missed' in picture captions from the vow renewal, unlike David wrote when his son skipped multiple celebrations for his 50th birthday, including one nearby in Miami. And the perceived digs do not end there. Speculation surrounding the family rift was further fuelled by Nicola's butterfly-adorned reception dress — which some think was a snub to Victoria, who has her own fashion brand. 8 8 Indeed, it was the latest in a string of 'wedding' outfits Nicola has worn which did not come from her mother-in-law's label. This time she upcycled the gown her mum wore as a bride in 1985. Spectators have called it Nicola's 'revenge dress' after she claimed Victoria had offered to design her original gown — then allegedly 'blanked her for days' before saying her firm couldn't do the job. Despite the hurt, none of the outfits that Nicola wore over her weekend-long wedding celebrations in 2022 were by Victoria's label. Instead, the model, who 'was painted as a brat' over the alleged fiasco, opted for a Valentino Haute Couture wedding gown, a trio of Versace numbers and a Dior bridal suit. And this time, Nicola was clearly doubling down by wearing two non-VB outfits. Brooklyn's appearance may also sting for his family — as of his 100 tattoos, 70 are dedicated to Nicola and her family, including her late grandma Gina. He also camouflaged a 'mama's boy' tattoo on his heart with flowers. It's yet another sign of Brooklyn's life being overtaken by the Peltzes, which likely leaves the Beckhams feeling sidelined. Mark Borkowski says the vow renewal ceremony was more like 'a soft launch for the Peltz brand' than a touching family reunion and that the Beckham name was 'parked at the . . . diamond-encrusted gates' of the billionaire Peltzes mansion. It seems Brooklyn's family were not even referenced and played no part in the event. Ditching 'the Beckham dynasty', which Mark considers a 'golden ticket', is risky. But Brooklyn seems unfazed as he is drawn deeper into his wife's family. In a video posted by the wannabe chef in May, he called wife Nicola 'my whole world', adding, 'I always choose you'. There's no doubt where Brooklyn's loyalties lie now. And after his controversial vow renewal, the door back to the Beckhams appears very much nailed shut. 8 Brook wants to cut family adrift By Sally Land BROOKLYN Beckham has sent a message loud and clear that he is drawing a line under his former life. His recent marriage vows renewal with Nicola – after just three years – should have been a time of celebration for both his and his wife's familes. But the occasion was entirely dominated by his in-laws the mega-wealthy Peltz clan. Not one member of his own family was invited to the occasion, and none of his former friends and associates were included either. This is a man who is determined to cut himself adrift from his parents, his siblings and grandparents. While his bride's family have seemingly enveloped him with open arms, by turning his back towards his own parents, his brothers and sister, he has severed a key support line. For while we often dislike or disagree with what our loved ones tell us, they are most likely to be the ones who truly have our best interests at heart. None of us really know what goes on within the walls of other family's homes but for a family to be rejected by one member is truly painful. All the Beckhams can do is keep quietly reassuring Brooklyn that they love him and that when the time is right, welcome him back without reservation. Being rejected by a loved one, or living as an estranged adult carries huge social stigma and regularly leads to a deep sense of isolation. Wedding Dress Controversy: Rumours begin circulating that there's tension between Nicola and Victoria Beckham after Nicola chooses not to wear a Victoria Beckham -designed wedding gown. Nicola later clarifies in August 2022 (and again in March 2023) that Victoria's atelier couldn't make the dress in time, but reports in May 2025 suggest Victoria actually changed her mind about making the dress. Post-Wedding (2022 onwards): Minimal interaction between Nicola and Victoria on social media, and noticeable absence of Nicola at key Beckham family events. Alleged Wedding "Hijack": In May 2025, a source claimed Victoria "ruined" part of the wedding by allegedly hijacking a dance with Marc Anthony, which was meant for Brooklyn and Nicola. Nicola reportedly ran from the room crying. March 2025: A resurfaced TikTok of Romeo and Cruz mimicking a "baby voice" (which fans associate with Nicola) sparks speculation of sibling shade. April 2025: Brooklyn and Nicola are reportedly absent from Victoria Beckham's 51st birthday celebrations in Miami and her Paris Fashion Week show. May 2025: David Beckham's 50th Birthday Snub: Brooklyn and Nicola are notably absent from David Beckham's 50th birthday celebrations in London, despite being invited. Reports suggest their absence was due to Brooklyn not wanting to be in the same room as Kim Turnbull, the girlfriend of Romeo who had previously been reported to have been dating Brooklyn, who David allegedly opted to have at the party over Nicola. Rumours emerge of a falling out between Brooklyn and his younger brother Romeo, reportedly due to Romeo's new girlfriend, DJ Kim Turnbull, who allegedly had a past connection with Brooklyn. Reports surface that the Beckham parents are "hurt and disappointed" that Brooklyn is "playing no part in family life." Sources claim that tensions between Brooklyn and Nicola and his parents are "definitely not beyond repair." Cruz Beckham posts cryptic lyrics on Instagram that some interpret as a swipe at Brooklyn. July 2025: Reports indicate David and Victoria are "desperate" to reconcile with Brooklyn. Brooklyn publicly wishes his sister Harper a happy 14th birthday on Instagram, tagging Nicola, which is seen as a potential "olive branch" and a rare public message to his family amid the rumored rift. Brooklyn UNFOLLOWS his brothers Romeo and Cruz just 24 hours after his birthday message to Harper. Nicola quickly follows suit and also ditches the Beckham bros from her Instagram following. Romeo and Cruz are now also no longer following Brooklyn.
