Wisconsin football transfer edge named to Comeback Player of the Year watch list

USA Todaya day ago
Wisconsin football transfer edge rusher Mason Reiger was named to the Comeback Player of the Year watch list on Tuesday.
Reiger, who missed the entire 2024 slate with a knee injury, was one of 75 players across 51 programs to earn a spot on the preseason list. Including Reiger, a total of 13 players from the Big Ten appeared on the lengthy list.
The 6-foot-5 outside linebacker joined Luke Fickell's program in December following four seasons with the Louisville Cardinals. In 32 total games from 2021-23, the Illinois native logged 49 total tackles (32 solo), 17 for loss, 8.0 sacks, four forced fumbles and three pass deflections.
As a redshirt junior in 2023, Reiger tallied a career-best 22 tackles and 5.0 sacks. In a top-10 win over Notre Dame, he showed out with a season-high four tackles, two sacks for 12 yards and one forced fumble.
As a transfer this winter, Reiger was considered 247Sports' No. 18 overall edge and a four-star prospect. His addition to the Badgers' defense, which accounted for 17 total sacks and 42 tackles for loss in 2024, will provide a much-needed boost in scenarios where Mike Tressel elects to hunt the opposing quarterback.
Reiger projects to line up at right outside linebacker ahead of veteran Aaron Witt. Darryl Peterson, Tackett Curtis and Christian Alliegro are slated to accompany the first-year Badger as starters in the linebacker room -- a group that has traditionally performed at a high level at the center of the Wisconsin defense.

Notre Dame shares new Leprechaun logo for the ‘25 football season inspired by Xavier Watts

Notre Dame and its Leprechaun mascot have become synonymous with each other, and on Thursday the university shared its revamped football logo for the 2025 season. The athletic department will be tweaking it for other sports, but obviously the biggest one is for the football team. While we have traditionally seen the mascot with his hands up, ready to fight, the unique football logo will now feature the Leprechaun holding a ball as he head's toward the goal line. You can see the complete new logo here, and the team store already has gear that you can purchase with it. To me, the best part of this announcement was the video shared by Notre Dame football's official social media account, as the short shows the process that went into deciding how the new logo would look. The team showed others like 'Rocket' Ismail, Manti Te'o, and Kyren Williams as potential inspiration for it, but ultimate decided that Xavier Watts interception against USC was the right look. It's a huge honor for Watts, as his depiction has been turned into the Leprechaun for the 2025 football season. USC rival Notre Dame names CJ Carr as starting quarterback for 2025 season

While Jayden Maiava is widely expected to be under center for the Trojans when they kickoff off their season vs. Missouri State next week, head coach Lincoln Riley has still not officially named a starting quarterback yet. However, one of USC's rivals has, as on Tuesday, Notre Dame head coach Marcus Freeman revealed that redshirt freshman CJ Carr will start for the Fighting Irish this fall. Carr appeared in one game for Notre Dame last fall. However, he has yet to attempt a pass at the college level. The Trojans are set to visit South Bend on October 18. D'Anton Lynn and the USC defense will be tasked with preparing for Carr and Notre Dame's offense. Carr is the grandson of legendary Michigan head coach Lloyd Carr. The Trojans defeated Carr's Wolverines in both the 2004 and 2007 Rose Bowls. This fall, they will be looking to deal the younger Carr the same fate.

Meet Ethan Robinson, cornerback whose INT clinched win for Miami Dolphins over Detroit Lions

Cornerback Ethan Robinson was the unlikely hero of the Miami Dolphins' 24-17 victory over the Detroit Lions. Or maybe he wasn't so unlikely to play the role. Robinson sealed the victory with an athletic interception on the Miami 20-yard line with 22 seconds left. He leaped for the ball and managed to hang onto it when many players might have been content to just bat it down. Asked about what stands out on his film, Robinson said this: 'The two things I feel like stand out the most about my film is my ability to play the ball in the air and generate havoc that way, and my ability to tackle.' The Lions had driven down the field, threatening to tie or even win the game (we all know coach Dan Campbell calls an aggressive game, so why not go for two?). Speaking to Miami's WTVJ-Channel 4 after being the Lions, Robinson said, 'I just got up, tried to make a play. Got my blitz time right, saw the angle of the quarterback's arm.' Robinson was joined by a throng of his teammates as he galloped down the field in celebration. 'It felt great with the game on the line,' he said.
