‘Legitimisation cell': Israeli army unit falsely branded journalists as Hamas operatives to justify strikes, report says
Israel's military assigned a special unit to identify journalists it could portray as undercover Hamas operatives to target them and deflect international criticism over the killing of media persons, according to a report by the Israeli-Palestinian outlet +972 magazine.
The 'legitimisation cell' was established in the aftermath of the October 7, 2023, Hamas attack, to collect information aimed at bolstering Israel's image and reinforcing diplomatic and military backing from key allies, as per the report citing three intelligence sources.
The intelligence sources said that the Israeli military regarded the media as an extension of the battlefield, which allowed it to declassify sensitive intelligence for public release.
'There was this phrase, 'that's good for legitimacy,'' one source recalled, as per +972 magazine. 'The goal was simply to find as much material as possible to serve hasbara efforts.' They added that even personnel outside the Legitimisation Cell were instructed to flag any material that could support Israel in the information war.
Several 'research teams' had been formed within Israeli military intelligence over the past two years to focus on 'exposing Hamas' lies.'
They said the aim was to 'discredit' journalists covering the war on broadcast networks, in allegedly a reliable and precise way,' but those who they alleged were affiliated with Hamas, official security sources were quoted as saying by the magazine.
Four Al Jazeera journalists, along with two freelancers, were killed in an Israeli strike last week in Gaza City. Among them was prominent correspondent Anas al-Sharif, who the Israeli military alleged was a Hamas operative 'posed as a journalist.'
In October 2024, the military alleged that six Al Jazeera journalists, including Al-Sharif, were operatives, a claim he strongly denied. The Israeli army killed six journalists in a strike on August 10, which it acknowledged was directed at Sharif.
Two months earlier, in July, the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) had voiced concern for al-Sharif's safety, warning that he was 'targeted by an Israeli military smear campaign, which he believes is a precursor to his assassination,' as cited by +972 magazine.
'If the global media is talking about Israel killing innocent journalists, then immediately there's a push to find one journalist who might not be so innocent, as if that somehow makes killing the other 20 acceptable,' an intelligence source was quoted as saying by the magazine.
In at least one instance since the war began, the 'Legitimisation Cell' distorted intelligence to falsely present a journalist as a member of Hamas's military wing, two intelligence sources said.

Hamas Rejects Israel's Plan For Gaza Relocation, Decries 'New Wave Of Genocide'
Last Updated: The Israeli military had earlier said it was preparing to relocate residents from combat zones to the south of the Gaza Strip "to ensure their safety". Hamas on Sunday rejected Israel's plan to relocate residents from Gaza City, saying it constitutes a 'new wave of genocide and displacement" for hundreds of thousands of residents in the area. The Israeli military had earlier said it was preparing to provide tents and other equipment ahead of its plan to relocate residents from combat zones to the south of the enclave 'to ensure their safety", as Israel intends to launch a new offensive to seize control of Gaza City. Hamas said the planned deployment of tents and other shelter equipment by Israel into southern Gaza was a 'blatant deception" to cover up a 'brutal crime that the occupation forces prepare to execute". The Palestinian militant group was referring to Israeli plans to expand military operations into Gaza City and surrounding refugee camps, which have triggered both international condemnation and growing domestic criticism. Israel's Gaza Relocation Plan Earlier, a Reuters report said Israel and South Sudan are reportedly in early talks regarding the possible relocation of Palestinians from war‑ravaged Gaza. According to three anonymous sources, no agreement has been reached yet, but discussions are underway. The sources, who spoke anonymously, said the plan involves moving people from Gaza, which has been devastated by nearly two years of conflict with Israel, to South Sudan, a country long plagued by political and ethnic violence. The idea of relocating Gaza's population has been strongly rejected by Palestinian leaders and many world figures. Palestinians view such a move as another 'Nakba" (catastrophe), similar to the mass displacement during the 1948 Arab-Israeli war. The war began when Hamas attacked southern Israel on October 7, 2023, killing 1,200 people and taking 251 hostages, according to Israeli authorities. About 20 of the remaining 50 hostages in Gaza are believed to be still alive. Israel's subsequent military offensive has killed more than 61,000 Palestinians, and brought millions of people to the brink of hunger. Tens of thousands of demonstrators gathered on Sunday evening in Tel Aviv to call for an end to the war in Gaza and the release of hostages. Gaza's civil defence agency said Israeli fire on Sunday killed over sixty Palestinians, including at least 37 waiting to collect food aid near two sites. Netanyahu rebukes anti-war protesters
Israelis protest demanding end to Gaza war (AP file photo) Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has condemned protesters who have been calling for an end to the war in Gaza at nationwide demonstrations on Sunday. "Those calling today for an end to the war without the defeat of Hamas not only harden Hamas' position and draw out the release of our hostages, but also ensure that the horrors of October 7 will reoccur," Netanyahu told a Cabinet meeting. October 7 was the day in 2023 when Hamas-led militants carried out the deadly attacks in southern Israel that triggered Israel's ongoing Gaza offensive. Protesters in Israel call for end to Gaza war and hostage deal Demonstrators took to the streets across Israel on Sunday, with Tel Aviv a focus for protests calling for an end to the war in Gaza and a deal to release hostages still held by militants in the Palestinian enclave. Protesters in Tel Aviv blocked several roads in the city, including the highway connecting Tel Aviv and Jerusalem, while a huge Israeli flag covered with portraits of the remaining captives was unfurled in so-called Hostage Square. Protest organizers and the main campaign group representing the families of hostages also called a general strike that caused many businesses to close. Protesters say they fear further fighting could endanger the hostages still thought to be in Gaza. Police employed water cannon and made more than two dozen arrests for "disruption of order" during the protests. The demonstrations were condemned by some members of the Israeli goverment, with far-right Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich saying public pressure to obtain a deal "buries the hostages in tunnels and seeks to push the State of Israel to surrender to its enemies and jeopardize its security and future." by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Multi-Asset Trades, Multi-Level Rewards Vantage Markets IN Register Undo The protests come after Israel's security cabinet approved plans to seize Gaza City as the Israeli military continues its more than 22-month offensive against the Palestinian militant group Hamas. The offensive was triggered by the Hamas-led attack on southern Israel on October 7, 2023, in which 251 people were taken hostage in addition to the some 1,200 killed. Forty-nine of the hostages remain in Gaza, 27 of whom are dead, according to the Israeli military.

Laura Loomer attacks Mehdi Hasan over his stance on Gaza, ‘Never seen anything more soulless than a Muslim calling for…'
A war of words has broken out between Laura Loomer and ex-MSNBC host Mehdi Hasan after the latter accused Loomer of being 'soulless' and 'sociopathic.' Hasan shared a Rolling Stone report about Donald Trump's administration stopping all visitor visas from Gaza, including those for humanitarian and medical aid, after Loomer posted about Palestinian children being allowed into the United States for medical care. Laura Loomer attacks Mehdi Hasan over his stance on Gaza (AP Photo/Chris Szagola, File, @mehdirhasan/X) The Department of State wrote on X, 'All visitor visas for individuals from Gaza are being stopped while we conduct a full and thorough review of the process and procedures used to issue a small number of temporary medical-humanitarian visas in recent days.' 'It's amazing how fast we can get results from the Trump administration,' Loomer wrote on X, adding an applause emoji. The post appears to have been deleted now. Read More | Laura Loomer vs. Marjorie Taylor Greene: Shocking MAGA war breaks out over 2023 purchase Loomer previously shared a video showing children from Gaza arriving in San Francisco for treatment. 'Why are any Islamic invaders coming into the US under the Trump admin?' she wrote. Loomer added, 'This is a national security threat. We didn't vote for more Islamic immigration into the United States.' Mehdi Hasan and Laura Loomer's feud Hasan shared the Rolling Stone article which says, 'Trump cuts off medical visas from Gaza after Laura Loomer freaked out over a video showing several children being permitted to come to the U.S. for medical care.' He captioned the post, 'Imagine how soulless and sociopathic you have to be to see children getting healthcare and going out of your way to prevent them from getting it. The modern pro-Israel, Trumpist conservative movement'. Loomer quickly attacked Hasan over an old, deleted X post where he had written, ' Make American Planes Crash Again.' Hasan had shared the post earlier after two people died in a plane crash at Georgia's Covington Airport east of Atlanta. The post sparked outrage, and Hasan deleted it, calling it 'poorly worded.' Loomer shared a screenshot of Hasan's now-deleted post, and wrote, 'You are an Islamic immigrant. If you don't like the policies of the US, you can go back to the shit hole you came from. Please leave. Nobody likes you. I've never seen anything more soulless than a Muslim calling for more Plane Crashes in AMERICA. GET OUT OF MY COUNTRY PARASITE!' Hasan had, however, previously acknowledged that the post was not in good taste. He said after deleting the post, 'I deleted this sarcastic quote-tweet because MAGA and Islamophobic folks are clipping it out of context and trying to ridiculously suggest I'm inciting violence.' 'But this tweet was in poor taste, poorly worded, and has allowed people in bad faith to call me a terrorist, with one New York Post reporter cc-ing the FBI. So I deleted it. Meanwhile, the right wants to silence all journalists while crying 'a show free speech!'' he added.
