Guyana to crack down on gold smuggled in from Venezuela at the urging of the US government - International
Guyana has pledged to crack down on gold smuggled across the border from neighbouring Venezuela at the urging of the U.S. government.
President Irfaan Ali said late Friday that the government of the South American country is dedicating 'enormous resources' to thwart the smuggling, which has long been a problem. He said authorities have increased border patrols and improved monitoring in mining regions.
Local officials have said they suspect that Venezuelan-sanctioned gold is being mixed with gold mined in Guyana and then passed off as local production and sold to markets in the U.S., Canada, the Middle East, and elsewhere.
In 2021, the Royal Canadian Mint suspended gold purchases from a major export company in Guyana because officials suspected some shipments had been mixed with Venezuelan gold, an allegation the company denied.
Meanwhile, the U.S. Embassy in Guyana has suspended the visas of several miners suspected of smuggling Venezuelan gold overseas.
Gold is Guyana's second most important export after oil, generating nearly $1 billion last year. Some 434,000 ounces of gold were produced last year, up from 432,000 ounces the previous year, according to the Ministry of Natural Resources. It noted that up to 50% of local gold production is smuggled out of Guyana.
U.S. Ambassador Nicole Theriot on Friday praised Guyana's cooperation, noting that the countries have worked together to secure Guyana's border with Venezuela.
Relations between the two South American neighbours remain tense, given a bitter dispute over the Essequibo region, which Venezuela has long claimed as its own. It represents two-thirds of Guyana and is rich in gold, diamonds, timber, and other natural resources. It is also located close to massive offshore oil deposits, with current production averaging some 650,000 barrels daily.

Deadly Gaza strikes Meanwhile, on the ground, Gaza's civil defence agency said that 34 people had been killed by Israeli strikes or gunfire since midnight. Civil defence spokesman Mahmud Bassal told AFP that "11 people (were) killed near aid distribution points in the central and southern parts of the territory." Eyewitnesses and local authorities have reported repeated killings of Palestinians near distribution centres over recent weeks. Samir Abu Jarbou, 28, told AFP by phone that he had gone with four relatives to pick up food aid in an area of central Gaza around midnight. "Suddenly the (Israeli) army opened fire, and drones started shooting. We ran away and got nothing," he said. "The situation is catastrophic. We are suffering from terrible hunger. My only wish is to succeed in getting a bag of flour to feed my seven siblings." Bassal said 23 people were killed in at least seven separate strikes across the territory, mainly in the north. Restrictions on media in Gaza and difficulties in accessing many areas mean AFP is unable to independently verify the full tolls and details provided by rescuers. Evacuation order Israel's military issued a fresh evacuation order on Monday for several areas in and around Gaza City. "For your safety, immediately evacuate further westward and southward toward Al-Mawasi," the military's Arabic-language spokesman Avichay Adraee posted on X. Despite being declared a safe zone by Israel, Al-Mawasi has been hit by repeated strikes. Israel's war on Gaza has killed at least 56,531 people, mostly women and children. 30 June Revolution a starting point for the new republic: El-Sisi on 12th anniversary
President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi described the 30 June Revolution as a defining moment in Egypt's modern history during his speech on the occasion of the revolution's 12th anniversary. 'The people stood in the face of terrorism and conspiracies, broke waves of chaos, thwarted blackmail and abduction attempts, and restored the state to its rightful path,' the president said in his address. "The 30 June Revolution was the starting point for the new republic,' he added. Since 2013, Egypt has been making a new history, not through words or slogans, but through actions and achievements, El-Sisi emphasized. Regional challenges 'I address you today while our entire region is groaning under the fires of wars — from the cries of victims in war-battered Gaza to the conflicts in Sudan, Libya, Syria, Yemen, and Somalia,' the president expressed. He appealed to all sides of these ongoing conflicts and the international community to take all necessary actions and listen to the voice of wisdom to spare the region's peoples further destruction and suffering. "Peace cannot be born from bombardment or imposed by force. It cannot be formed by enforced normalization. True peace is built on justice, equality, and understanding," El-Sisi affirmed. He said peace in the Middle East will never be achieved without the establishment of an independent Palestinian state on the 4 June 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital. 'The Egyptian-Israeli peace experience in the 1970s, brokered by the United States, is a testament that peace is only possible when intentions are sincere,' he stressed. President El-Sisi also described the people as the backbone, protective shield, and beating heart of the nation. He affirmed that Egypt's strength lies not only in its weapons, but also in its people's awareness and unity, as well as their rejection of any attempts at division and hatred. Brazil ex-leader Bolsonaro rallies thousands of supporters to protest his trial over alleged plot to overturn election
Sao Paulo Associated Press — Former Brazilian President Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro on Sunday attended a public demonstration in Sao Paulo to protest against his ongoing Supreme Court trial in the South American country. A couple of thousand people gathered on Paulista Avenue, one of the city's main locations, in a demonstration that Bolsonaro, before the event, called 'an act for freedom, for justice.' Bolsonaro and 33 allies are facing trial over an alleged plot to overturn the 2022 presidential election results and remain in power. They were charged with five counts related to the plan. The former president has denied the allegations and claims that he's the target of political persecution. He could face up to 12 years in prison if convicted. 'Bolsonaro, come back!' protesters chanted, but the former president is barred from running for office until 2030. Brazil's Superior Electoral Court ruled last year that he abused his political power and made baseless claims about the country's electronic voting system.
