An incident in western P.E.I. that left 35-year-old man dead has now claimed a second victim: the female passenger from Summerside who was injured when a Toyota Corolla was shot at, rolled over and hit a utility pole on Friday night.
"This afternoon, P.E.I. RCMP were informed by the family of the 50-year-old woman involved in the shooting incident in Urbainville that she has passed," the force said in a news release Tuesday.
"Our thoughts are with the families of both victims involved in this incident."
The news release said RCMP had no further information to provide, adding: "The families of both victims asked for respect and privacy during this difficult time."
During a news conference Monday, an RCMP spokesman said both people in the car had sustained injuries from the crash, with the driver also suffering gunshot wounds. The force had earlier described the woman's injuries as serious.
Cpl. Gavin Moore said police believe there was another vehicle on the isolated dirt section of Hackmatack Road when the "targeted" shooting occurred at about 8 p.m. AT Friday.
"Police are also investigating a report of a burned vehicle located in St. Lawrence, near Miminegash, reported at approximately 8:15 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 9, which may be linked to this case," he added.
That location in western Prince County is about 60 kilometres from Urbainville, which is about 80 kilometres west of Charlottetown.
Police have not named a suspect in the case.
"P.E.I. RCMP will share updates as information can be made available," the Tuesday news release said.

Grand jury to review fatal Denton Square shooting of homeless man, police say

No charges have been filed against a man accused of fatally shooting a homeless individual multiple times during a disturbance while visiting Denton's downtown square with his family, police said Wednesday. The case, involving the death of 61-year-old Jon Ruff, will be referred to the Denton County District Attorney's Office for presentation to a grand jury - a standard procedure for homicide cases in the county, regardless of whether an arrest has been made, according to Denton police. The shooting occurred shortly after noon on Saturday, Aug. 9, in the 200 block of Hickory Street near Elm Street. Ruff was taken to the hospital, where he later died. The suspected shooting suspect remained at the scene and has been cooperative while being questioned by police, authorities said. "While detectives determine the facts of what led to the shooting, some details cannot yet be shared to maintain the integrity of the investigation," Denton police said in a news release on Wednesday. "... Officers continue to have a visible presence downtown. The shooting was an isolated incident, and there is no active threat to the public." The investigation is continuing, according to police. "Residents are urged to rely only on verified official sources for details associated with the investigation," Denton police said. Anyone with additional video connected to the investigation is urged to contact Detective Badiru at (940) 349-7977. CBS News Texas will provide updates as more information becomes available.

Republican Ex-Candidate Sentenced to 80 Years in Prison for Shooting Plot

A former Republican candidate for a State House seat in New Mexico was sentenced to 80 years in prison on Wednesday for orchestrating a politically motivated shooting spree against four Democratic officials. The series of shootings happened in December 2022 and early January 2023, weeks after the candidate, Solomon Peña, had lost his race. When Mr. Peña, 42, was arrested in January 2023, the authorities said he had paid four men in cash to shoot at the homes of certain Democratic officials, including a county commissioner and a state senator. No one was injured in the attacks. In March of this year, a jury found Mr. Peña guilty on 13 federal charges, including conspiracy, weapons-related charges and interference with federally protected activities. Mr. Peña's sentencing brings to an end a closely watched case that had rattled politicians in New Mexico. The shooting spree followed other episodes across the country of politically motivated attacks, including an assault on Nancy Pelosi's husband, that fueled concerns about political violence and election conspiracy theories. Elected officials have continued to face threats of violence. President Trump faced an assassination attempt during a rally in Butler, Pa., last year during his re-election campaign. In June, a Minnesota man was charged with killing a Minnesota state lawmaker and her husband in a political assassination and wounding another state lawmaker and his wife. 'Violence and intimidation have no place in our elections,' Ryan Ellison, the U.S. attorney for New Mexico, said in a statement. 'This sentence shows that through the tireless work of our agents and prosecutors we will protect our democracy and bring offenders to justice.' Mr. Peña refused to accept his electoral defeat, even though he had lost by a wide margin to an incumbent in a Democratic stronghold in Albuquerque. He claimed the election was rigged and visited the homes of some members of the Bernalillo County Board of Commissioners to urge them not to certify the results. A few weeks later, someone shot at the home of one commissioner, Adriann Barboa. The home of State Representative Javier Martinez was shot at a few days later, and a similar drive-by shooting occurred soon after at the home of another commissioner, Debbie O'Malley, who is now a state senator. Then came the shooting at the house of State Senator Linda Lopez. Mr. Peña accompanied the shooters to Ms. Lopez's house, the authorities said. In a statement, Ms. Barboa said she had not attended the Wednesday sentencing hearing, because she wanted to protect her 'peace and health.' 'I am not shuttered or intimidated by Peña's failed attempts to stall or halt democracy,' she said in the statement. 'I, too, have faced hardships in my life and have chosen the path of love, healing and public service, while Peña has used his hardships to justify violence.' After he was arrested, Mr. Peña tried to have his accomplices, Jose Trujillo and Demetrio Trujillo, killed to prevent them from testifying, according to the federal prosecutors. He offered fellow inmates money and a vehicle in exchange for the deaths. Mr. Peña was previously convicted in 2008 of burglary and larceny and spent seven years in prison in New Mexico. In addition to his 80-year prison sentence for the shooting spree, Mr. Peña will be required to pay a $250,000 fine.
