Cambridge house fire victim Nevaeh Ngamoki-Porter honoured with haka from Rototuna Junior High
Video taken by Nevaeh's mother, from inside the hearse carrying her body, showed the column of teenagers standing to attention along the roadside.
Nevaeh's coffin was draped in a korowai (cloak) of blue, green, purple, white and black feathers.
'This send-off was done in my daughter's honour as she was quite popular within her school and wider parts of the Waikato,' her mother said.
'Thanks, Rototuna Junior High, for the haka tautoko for our sweet girl.'
Nevaeh's school said: 'She was a vibrant soul with a deep passion for Kapa Haka and Te Reo Māori.
'Her enthusiasm was infectious, and she was a valued and spirited member of our Kapa Haka rōpū, Tuna Whakapeke and Raratuna. We will fondly remember her dedication and the joy she found in celebrating her culture.
'She will be dearly missed. During this incredibly difficult time, our thoughts and aroha are with her whānau and friends.
'We know that this loss is deeply felt by our students and staff. To support our school community, our whare, Te Tuuranga o Koura, is open as a space for us to gather, to grieve, and to process this profound loss together.
'Members of our counselling team, along with senior staff, are available to provide support and a listening ear to anyone who needs it.'
When the first firefighters from Cambridge arrived at the Brennan Place property, the fire was well alight and Nevaeh was unaccounted for.
Three people were inside at the time of the blaze - Nevaeh, her older sister, and her sister's partner, the Waikato Times reported.
Firefighters entered the house to look for Naveah.
She was carried out of the burning building badly injured and taken to hospital by ambulance.
Police confirmed she was found by a volunteer firefighter who was an off-duty police officer.
'The teen was pulled to safety and crews provided immediate medical assistance,' a spokesman said.
Fire investigator Kevin Holmes told the Waikato Times the blaze started in a bedroom. He said the cause had been identified, but would not be announced until the police probe was completed.
The fire was not being treated as suspicious.
Neighbours told the Waikato Times the fire spread quickly, while one recalled hearing calls for help from inside a granny flat attached to the property.

'Wouldn't overblow it' - Education Minister on maths book errors

Photo: RNZ / REECE BAKER The Education Minister has thanked "keen bean" students for picking up errors in Ministry of Education-funded maths resources. Eighteen errors were spotted and fixed in new maths resources, including incorrect sums, a wrong number labelled in te reo Māori, and incorrectly saying "triangles" instead of "rectangles" in an answer. In one case, an answer to a problem in a Year 4 workbook was listed as 1024, and had to be changed to the correct answer of 19,875. In another workbook, the number four in te reo Māori (whā) was incorrectly written as two (rua). Erica Stanford said she "wouldn't overblow it," as there was, on average, half a mistake per book. "Those little eagle-eyed, keen bean students around the country who are now doing an hour a day of mathematics, picked them up and we've fixed them," she said. Stanford said it was not unusual to have errors in books, and they may have been there for a while as they were existing resources. "You find it quite often in books, and it's not just these maths books, you'll find the odd error here and there." "Our resource providers regularly review their print and digital resources to correct any errors that have been reported, and to ensure accuracy," it said. The ministry asked schools to contact it if they found any errors, including typos. Big 3 hunting competition nets 1500kg of meat
If it was a feral pest, then it was fair game for the freezer during Te Anau's King's Birthday Weekend hunting competition. Freezers overflowed with 1500kg of meat from the annual Te Anau Helicopter Services Fiordland Big 3 hunting competition. Te Anau events organiser Melissa Fletcher said hunters had the choice to donate their venison to the Southland community via Deer to Care Southland, which would distribute the meat to multiple food banks and social services in the region. There were many benefits to removing feral pests from the environment, she said. "Pigs are quite pesky. They can rip up a paddock overnight so the farmers are quite happy with getting rid of them." The team named Outdoors with Tom pretty much cleaned up most of the major categories with a massive stag. "That's what happens when you've got one really good animal ... " But Team Outdoors With Tom did not win all the prizes — they missed out on The Best Hunting Story, which was won by team Predator Patrol. Ms Fletcher said the wee boy in Predator Patrol had been confused about the entry field — mixing best "Pest" with "Pet". "He was willing to give up his dog — the dog is still alive — but that's dedication." Hunting began last Thursday evening amid heavy rain and severe gale force wind warnings. Hunters had to shoot a deer, a pig and one other feral animal to qualify for the Big 3. Entry numbers were down on previous years, but organisers suspected the severe weather might have influenced the turnout. Altogether, 32 four-member adult teams, (including six women's teams), eight Mums and Kids, six youth teams and 29 children's teams rolled up to Sunday's weigh-in, vying for a prize.
