Scots cafe 'under siege' from 'feral youth gang' who attacked third time in week
A Scots cafe has been targeted by a gang of youths for the third time in a week after nearby business owners warned they are 'under siege' from feral groups.
Last weekend a firework was let off near customers at Sir Walter's Cafe in Princes Street in Edinburgh, exploding near women and young children. Just days later, two female youths were captured breaking open a shutter and raiding the cafe, reports Edinburgh Live.
Paulius Bernotas, who owns the business in Princes Street Gardens, raised concerns over an increase in antisocial behaviour from large groups of youths in the area and called on police to carry out regular patrols to deter further offending.
On Thursday July 3, several male youths appeared to approach the cafe shortly before midnight and attempted to prize open the same shutter before turning the camera away from them.
According to Paulius, more damage was dealt to the unit, but nothing appears to have been taken.
Two hooded male youths can be seen approaching the cafe and attempting to pull open the wooden shutter before two females join them. In the background, people can be seen walking along Princes Street, looking towards the group.
A hand is then visible as the camera is moved away from them while they allegedly broke the doors open.
After being approached about a rise in youth-related incidents within Princes Street Gardens, Sergeant Robert Richardson said officers are currently running a dedicated initiative which involves high-visibility patrols specifically targeting antisocial behaviour on Princes Street and the surrounding area.
Paulius previously told how groups regularly make their way around Princes Street Gardens with speakers during the day and approach his cafe and seating area in the afternoon.
Despite being asked to leave by staff, groups continue to 'look for a reaction' and vandalise his cafe. The raid on the unit earlier this week left Paulius with a bill of around £2,000 to repair damage caused to the shutter and a fridge.
Sergeant Robert Richardson said: "We understand the impact anti-social behaviour and disorder has on the local community, and I would like to thank locals who continue to bring these incidents to our attention. I would reassure them that everything possible is being done to reduce anti-social behaviour in our area.
'Officers are currently running a dedicated initiative named Operation Verbeia, which involves increased high-visibility patrols specifically targeting anti-social behaviour in the Princes Street area and its surroundings.
"We take reports of such instances very seriously and I would urge anyone who comes across disorder to contact police. Anti-social behaviour and criminal acts will not be tolerated and those found to be committing these offences will be dealt with appropriately.
'Anyone with any concerns is encouraged to report incidents to police on 101 or anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.'

Scots dad who murdered his two kids in revenge attack against wife denied parole
Fife MP Richard Baker confirmed Rab Thomson had been denied parole after he was sentenced for 17-years for murdering his daughter and son in 2008. Scots killer Rab Thomson, who savagely killed his own two children in their family home in Fife after his marriage broke down, has been denied parole. Thomson stabbed his disabled daughter Michelle, 25, and seven-year-old son Ryan to death in cold blood in 2008. The 67-year-old was sentenced to 17-years for the murders in Buckhaven. His former wife, June, recently begged the Parole Board not to grant him his freedom - calls that were echoed by others in the community. Richard Baker MP for Glenrothes and Mid Fife has now confirmed that the killer has been denied parole after he wrote to the authority, along with his wife MSP Claire Baker. He said: "Rab Thomson, who killed his son, seven, and disabled daughter in Buckhaven in 2008, has been denied parole. "My wife, Claire Baker MSP and I, who wrote to the board seeking this outcome, welcome the decision. I'm sure many people in Levenmouth will feel the same." Thomson is believed to have murdered his children out of cruel revenge on his estranged wife June who left him after 27-years of beatings and rape. In his first official access visit, after June finally plucked up the courage to leave him, he stabbed Ryan 14 times as the little boy played a computer game at the family home in Buckhaven, Fife, on May 3, 2008. He then turned the knife on Michelle, stabbing her 12 times as she fought for her life, leaving her bedroom like a bloodbath. After murdering his children, Thomson placed each child in bed and posed their bodies like little angels for his wife to find. Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community! Detective Inspector Graham Fenton, one of the detectives in charge of the investigation, said the killer traumatised his family for years. He previously said: 'June had been the victim of emotional, physical and sexual abuse. 'None of this was reported to the police, however many victims of domestic violence often suffer in silence.' He added: 'When Thomson came into our custody, he was very matter of fact. 'He showed no remorse. In fact, he never asked for his children once. 'At one stage during the interview, he even refused to sit on the chair in the room. He actually lay on the floor. It appeared to me that this was Thomson trying to exert control over a situation that wasn't his.' Last year, a documentary called Britain's Darkest Taboos, that covered the murders showed how Thomson exerted control over his terrified family. Dr Keri Nixon, a leading criminologist told if how Thomson cracked because his image as the perfect family man was destroyed by his split from his wife June. In film, taken at Christmas 2002 when youngest victim Ryan was not yet two, Thomson's wife June, 54, is heard begging her husband to stop filming but he persists. Dr Nixon said: 'He wanted to present a perfect life to the outside world. He liked to be respected, he liked to be admired. His wife leaving him was not part of that image. Because he was losing everything, his way of dealing with it was to destroy it.'

Emergency services descended on Penicuik's John Street shortly after 1am on Sunday, July 6, following a report of a disturbance, as Lothian bus services were diverted from the area. One eye witness told Edinburgh Live how at least two people were seen lying on the road as a "huge" police response and multiple ambulances were spotted at the scene. They said: "Large brawl outside Cuikoo bar Penicuik Main Street around 1.30/1.45am. At least two left lying on road injured. Massive police response. Unsure how many conveyed to hospital. "Road still closed at this time. Main street at junction with Carlops Road is where closure starts heading to towards town centre." A second person took to X to warn motorists the road was closed shortly after 2am. They added: "Dunno if anybody is near Penicuik but main street is closed, no one getting past. Three ambulances, four police, people all over the road. Hope everyone is ok." Man who avoided court for rape as teen faces fresh charges for attacking woman
The man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was previously accused of serious sexual assault when he was 15-year-old. A man who was allowed to avoid prosecution for rape as a teenager due to his age has appeared in court charged with attacking another woman. The man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was previously accused of serious sexual assault when he was 15-year-old. However at the time his case was dealt with by the Scottish Children's Reporter Administration (SCRA) in agreement with the Crown Office under controversial prosecution guidelines. It meant he did not have to appear in court to face any charges and instead was told to attend an educational course to change his behaviour. But the Sunday Mail can reveal the same individual appeared on petition in court in April accused of rape. It is understood that because of the way his case was handled previously, he does not have a criminal record and will now be treated as a first offender. Scottish Conservative shadow minister for victims and community safety Sharon Dowey MSP said: 'The double whammy of the SNP's reckless under-25s sentencing guidelines coupled with their diversion from prosecution orders have enabled predatory offenders to evade justice. 'Diversion from prosecution orders should never be used to deal with dangerous sexual criminals, like they have been on the SNP's watch. 'Rape victims are being betrayed by the SNP's pitifully weak justice system which takes the side of criminals and is completely out of touch with ordinary Scots. 'No alleged rapist should be allowed to walk away with a slap on the wrist, regardless of their age. It's time SNP ministers started prioritising the needs of victims rather than pushing their weakened justice agenda that panders to criminals.' We have repeatedly highlighted teens accused of rape being spared criminal trial under diversion from prosecution rules. In June 2023 we revealed how two women who had reported attacks and were prepared to go to court were told the cases would not go ahead due to the guidelines. Amid public and political outcry Lord Advocate Dorothy Bain ordered a review of how the controversial policy was being applied. The probe was extended in November 2023 to examine the way offenders aged 12 to 15 accused of rape were dealt with by the Children's Reporter system. Following our campaign, in April Bain KC announced changes to diversion from prosecution rules. Additional safeguards were put in place meaning all future decisions on diversion from prosecution will only be taken by senior Crown counsel appointed by the Lord Advocate. Communication with victims around decisions on cases involving children and sexual offending has also been prioritised. Diversion from prosecution rules were designed for those committing low-level crimes like vandalism to be dealt with by social work intervention or rehabilitation. But they began to be applied to young men accused of rape. Since we highlighted the controversial practice the number of diverted cases has halved. Referrals to the Scottish Children's Reporter Administration also fell but diversion has continued in some instances. During 2022-23 a total of 16 cases involving allegations of rape or attempted rape were diverted and 39 referred to the Children's Reporter. During 2023-24, eight such cases were diverted and 23 referred to the Children's Reporter . Appearing on petition, the man made no plea and was granted bail. He will return to court at a later date. A spokesperson for the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service said:'We cannot comment on specific details of ongoing cases. 'Sexual offences are among the most complex cases prosecutors handle, and we continuously review our approach. 'We recognise the serious impact of sexual offending and have published a revised framework for the use of diversion and referrals to the Reporter. 'We encourage anyone affected by sexual offending to report it to the police.'
