Tricked into buying ‘18 litres/day' cow, Kerala man gets consumer panel relief
Three years after he was tricked into purchasing a cow that failed to give anywhere close to the '18 litres of milk per day' he was assured, the Kasaragod native got relief from the State Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission (SCDRC). As per Mathai, he purchased a pregnant cow from Ganesh Rao, also from Kasaragod, on April 9, 2022, for Rs 36,500. Rao promised Mathai the bovine would give 18 litres of milk per day.
However, after delivery, the cow gave just 2 litres of milk and reacted violently whenever it was milked. It refused to feed the calf and would kick it away, Mathai said.
Mathai took the matter up with Rao. However, the latter's wife approached the police accusing him of creating nuisance at their home. During mediation by the police, Rao claimed he would prove the cow delivered the promised milk if it is milked at his residence.
On the police's directive, the cow and calf were taken to his residence. However, Rao refused to return the animals.
Mathai then approached the District Legal Services Authority, but Rao remained ex-parte. He then moved the District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission.
There, he got a rude shock. Rao claimed he never sold such a cow to him. Still, the commission favoured Mathai and directed Rao to refund him, and also pay him compensation and legal costs.
Aggrieved, Rao filed an appeal with the SCDRC. The bench comprising SCDRC president Justice B Sudheendra Kumar, judicial member Ajith Kumar D and member K R Radhakrishnan heard the case.

Arunachal cops recover 16 stolen vehicles, 5 held
Itanagar: In a blow to interstate vehicle theft syndicate, police have recovered 16 stolen vehicles taking the total vehicles recovered to 73 and arrested five accused, including four habitual offenders, an official said on Thursday. MP teen dies by suicide after losing money in online game
Bhopal: A 17-year-old youth allegedly committed suicide by jumping in front of a train on Tuesday evening apparently upset over losing Rs 35,000 in an online game, police said. Body of Vikas Rawat of Gwalior district of MP was discovered in a mutilated state on the railway tracks near the goods warehouse in Dabra yard. Prior to the incident, Vikas had parked his motorcycle on the down main line. Police stated that he had spoken to his family by phone shortly before the incident, informing them that he would return home, but he never did. Initially considered a routine suicide case, the investigation on Wednesday uncovered that the teenager had incurred significant losses in an online game. Teacher tapes ‘talkative' 8-year-old's mouth, pokes near eye; suspended
Hyderabad: An 8-year-old boy of a private school in Rangareddy district was allegedly subjected to physical abuse by his teacher for being talkative in the class, said district education officials. Officials said the Class 2 child's teacher gagged him with tape and repeatedly poked near his eye to silence him late July. The abuse came to light only now after Telangana State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (TGSCPCR) stepped in and suspended the teacher, following a complaint from the parents. District education officer P Suseendra Rao said the parents suspected trouble when the boy began refusing to attend school and showing visible distress. "The parents learned of the alleged abuse only after confronting the school management and viewing the classroom's CCTV footage. When the management failed to take any action or offer support, they turned to TGSCPCR," Rao said.
