Teacher tapes ‘talkative' 8-year-old's mouth, pokes near eye; suspended
Officials said the Class 2 child's teacher gagged him with tape and repeatedly poked near his eye to silence him late July. The abuse came to light only now after Telangana State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (TGSCPCR) stepped in and suspended the teacher, following a complaint from the parents.
District education officer P Suseendra Rao said the parents suspected trouble when the boy began refusing to attend school and showing visible distress.
"The parents learned of the alleged abuse only after confronting the school management and viewing the classroom's CCTV footage. When the management failed to take any action or offer support, they turned to TGSCPCR," Rao said.

The parents filmed the footage on their phone and submitted the video evidence with their complaint.
Speaking to TOI, TGSCPCR official M Chandana said the school defended the teacher's action as "discipline" for the child being "hyperactive and talking to classmates". The parents, who pay hefty fees, initially sought reassurances on his safety so he could remain enrolled. "No follow-up came. They have now decided to take legal action," Chandana said.
Corporal punishment is explicitly banned under the right education law of 2009. It forbids any form of physical or mental harassment in schools, making such conduct a punishable offence if proven.

9 teacher aspirants detained during protest demanding STET before TRE-4
1 2 3 4 Patna: Eleven days after a similar protest failed to yield any result, the teacher aspirants held another demonstration on Monday, demanding Secondary Teacher Eligibility Test (STET) before the fourth phase of Teacher Recruitment Exam (TRE-4). As it turned chaotic, police allegedly had to use mild force and detain nine demonstrators. The aspirants, many BEd degree-holders who had been waiting for the exam for months, started their procession from Patna College campus for the CM's residence, but their progress was halted by police and administration at Dak Bungalow crossing. When the protestors attempted to breach barricades, they were met with a forceful response from the police, who didn't deploy water cannons, despite being present at the spot. Carrying banners with slogans like "No STET, no vote" and "STET before TRE-4", the demonstrators voiced their frustration, alleging that the govt had failed to honour its promise to conduct the exam twice a year. "The govt has cheated us. Many of us have completed BEd degrees, and are awaiting the opportunity to sit for the exam, which has not been held since Nov 2023," Chandan Kumar, an aspirant said. Aman Kumar, another teacher aspirant, clarified the demands: "We are not demanding jobs, but just to conduct the STET before TRE-4. If the exam is not held before TRE-4, how will we apply for it," he said. In an attempt to de-escalate the situation, a three-member delegation of protesters was sent to the secretariat to meet with a representative of the CM. The delegation was reportedly assured that a response would be provided within one to two days, though the protesters said that they have been given similar unfulfilled assurances in the past. According to Krishna Murari Prasad, subdivisional police officer (law and order)-I, they were compelled to disperse the crowd after the delegation was sent, as the remaining protesters continued to create disturbance. "They were still protesting, causing chaos at the Dak Bungalow crossing. We asked them to leave but they resisted, so we had to disperse them," he said. This protest follows a similar demonstration that took place on Aug 7. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI). Cops register cheating case against ex-BJD min's son & daughter
Kendrapada: Police have registered a cheating case against former BJD minister Pratap Jena's son Ankit and daughter Aishwarya on Sunday for allegedly defrauding a private company of Rs 48 lakh. According to the police, Aravind Tripathy and Ganesh Swain, both managing directors of a Cuttack-based private electrical firm, had received work orders from the firm run by the brother-sister duo to supply electrical equipment and complete the 33KV and 11KV underground cabling work in Kendrapada town. The Cuttack-based firm claimed it had completed the assigned task, but when the time came for payment, Ankit and Aishwarya's company allegedly refused to pay the Rs 48 lakh. Despite repeated reminders, the brother-sister duo's firm allegedly did not pay the amount, forcing the Cuttack-based company to lodge an FIR against Ankit and Aishwarya for cheating. Ankit, who had unsuccessfully contested from Mahanga on a BJD ticket in the 2024 assembly election, refuted the allegation. "Some persons with an ulterior motive had filed a false and frivolous complaint against me and my sister. The electrical company obstructed our firm's work in Kendrapada, causing financial losses to us," Ankit told the media. A counter FIR was also lodged by them against the electrical firm. Kendrapada town police station inspector in-charge (IIC) Dilip Sahoo said two cases have been registered based on the complaints filed by the two parties. "Investigation is in progress," the IIC said. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI). J-K village defence guard ‘thrashed' after firing in air on Independence Day eve, constable suspended
The Jammu and Kashmir Police suspended a constable and initiated an inquiry into a DySP over the alleged thrashing of a village defence guard (VDG), who had fired into the air in Doda district's Thathri area after purportedly noticing some suspicious movement on the eve of Independence Day. Sources said Balbir Singh had noticed some suspicious movement in his Pernote village ahead of Independence Day celebrations and fired two rounds into the air. The next morning, he was summoned to Premnagar police outpost, where he was allegedly beaten up by a selection grade constable, Mohammad Zia. 'Zia has been placed under suspension with immediate effect and attached to the Doda district police lines,' a police spokesperson said. This followed Doda SSP Sandeep Mehta taking serious note of the incident, he said. Meanwhile, a departmental inquiry was ordered and a senior officer was asked to investigate the incident comprehensively and submit his report within a fortnight, the spokesperson said. In addition, the conduct of the then Thathri Station House Officer, DySP Afeer Jaleel, will also be thoroughly examined, he said. The inquiry officer has been directed to assess his role and submit specific findings for further necessary action, the spokesperson said. Balbir Singh said that after noticing suspicious movement by some unidentified people, he had first issued a warning to them, and after finding no response, he fired two rounds into the air. 'We were told to be alert about any suspicious movement as Independence Day was near. There was also a threat perception. I was only performing my duty,' he said. Security forces had an elaborate security system in place for the first Independence Day since Operation Sindoor. The Army had a three-layered security system in place on the Line of Control, with smart fences, robotic mules, quadcopters, advanced surveillance tools, night vision sights and all-terrain vehicles being deployed.
