Explained: How SpaceX's Crew Dragon will bring Shubhanshu Shukla and crew back to Earth

As part of the Axiom-4 mission, a private human spaceflight led by the US space company, Axiom Space, Indian Air Force group captain Shukla reached the ISS on 26 June, becoming the first Indian to set foot in the facility.
'After performing a series of departure burns to move away from the space station, Dragon will conduct multiple orbit-lowering manoeuvres, jettison the trunk, and re-enter Earth's atmosphere for splashdown off the coast of California 22.5 hours later,' SpaceX said in a statement Monday.
New Delhi: After a stay of nearly 20 days in the International Space Station (ISS), the Axiom-4 crew, including India's Shubhanshu Shukla, is set to return to Earth Tuesday. After undocking from the ISS, SpaceX's Grace—its latest Crew Dragon capsule—will begin a nearly 23-hour journey back to Earth, making a splashdown off the California coast.
While the initial plan was a 14-day stay, the return of the Ax-4 crew was rescheduled last week for 14 June. During his stay at the ISS, Shukla led seven experiments developed by Indian research institutions, while also participating in over 60 scientific experiments in microgravity conditions.

The return
SpaceX's Dragon, which was christened 'Grace' by mission commander Whitson just minutes after Ax-4 launch on 25 June, is scheduled to make a splashdown around 3.01 pm (IST) on Tuesday.
Axiom Space spokespersons explained that during its return, Grace will attain an orbital speed of about 2,816 kmph (17,500 mph). On its way, a series of parachutes will be deployed to slow it down, first to about 480 kmph and then to about 25 kmph, before it makes a controlled splashdown.
On Monday, after a round of system checks, the capsule was prepared for an autonomous undocking. After this initial process was completed, the Crew Dragon separated from the ISS, beginning a series of thruster burns to separate from the space station, with each burn the craft will move further away from the station before entering an orbit for reaching Earth.
Between Monday evening and Tuesday, SpaceX's capsule will be conducting different phases of the orbital phasing manoeuvres.
Closer to making a re-entry, Crew Dragon will jettison its trunk section and prepare to carry out the most critical manoeuvre—the deorbit burn.
During a deorbit burn, a spacecraft fires its engines to slow it down and initiate a descent from its orbit into the Earth's atmosphere. The controlled deceleration of the spacecraft is a crucial step in ensuring a safe atmospheric re-entry.
Once Dragon begins the process of entering the Earth's atmosphere, it will experience intense friction, which is expected to heat up the exterior of the craft to about 2000 degrees Celsius. The exterior of the capsule is coated with alloys that can withstand such high temperatures, keeping the crew inside safe.
After attaining peak heating, Dragon will progressively slow down. At a distance of about 5,000 metres from the splashdown site, the capsule will deploy two drogue parachutes, which will help stabilise it. Finally, four more parachutes will be deployed to bring down the descent speed to a safe range.
The module will then splash down in the waters, from where it will be recovered.
After being safely removed from the capsule, Shukla and his crewmates will have to undergo medical checkups and acclimatisation of at least 10 days.
Since SpaceX's Crew Dragon uses the latest technology, nearly all of the descent process will be automated. However, in case a system fails and manual intervention is required, Shukla will have to step in to take control as the designated mission pilot.

When Elon Musk's xAI was forced to apologise this week after its Grok chatbot spewed antisemitic content and white nationalist talking points, the response felt depressingly familiar: suspend the service, issue an apology and promise to do better. Rinse and isn't the first time we've seen this playbook. Microsoft's Tay chatbot disaster in 2016 followed a similar pattern. The fact that we're here again, nearly a decade later, suggests the AI industry has learnt remarkably little from its mistakes. But the world is no longer willing to accept 'sorry' as sufficient. This is because AI has become a force multiplier for content generation and dissemination, and the time-to-impact has shrunk. Thus, liability and punitive actions are being discussed. The Grok incident revealed a troubling aspect of how AI companies approach accountability. According to xAI, the problematic behaviour emerged after they tweaked their system to allow more 'politically incorrect' responses - a decision that seems reckless. When the inevitable happened, they blamed deprecated code that should have been removed. If you're building systems capable of reaching millions of users, shouldn't you know what code is running in production?The real problem isn't technical - it's philosophical. Too many AI companies treat bias and harmful content as unfortunate side effects to be addressed after deployment, rather than fundamental risks to be prevented beforehand. This reactive approach worked when the stakes were lower, but AI systems now operate at unprecedented scale and influence. When a chatbot generates hate speech, it's not embarrassing - it's dangerous, legitimising and amplifying extremist ideologies to vast legal landscape is shifting rapidly, and AI companies ignoring these changes do so at their peril. The EU's AI Act, which came into force in February, represents a shift from reactive regulation to proactive governance. Companies can no longer apologise their way out of AI failures - they must demonstrate they've implemented robust safeguards before AB 316, introduced last January, takes an even more direct approach by prohibiting the 'the AI did it' defence in civil cases. This legislation recognises what should be obvious: companies that develop and deploy AI systems bear responsibility for their outputs, regardless of whether those outputs were 'intended'.India's approach may prove more punitive than the EU's regulatory framework and more immediate than the US litigation-based system, focusing on swift enforcement of existing criminal laws rather than waiting for new AI-specific legislation. India doesn't yet have AI-specific legislation, but if Grok's antisemitic incident had occurred with Indian users, then steps like immediate blocking of the AI service, a criminal case against xAI under IPC 153A, and a demand for content removal from the X platform would have been Grok incident may mark a turning point. Regulators worldwide are demanding proactive measures rather than reactive damage control, and courts are increasingly willing to hold companies directly liable for their systems' shift is long overdue. AI systems aren't just software - they're powerful tools that shape public discourse, influence decision-making and can cause real-world harm. The companies that build these systems must be held to higher standards than traditional software developers, with corresponding legal and ethical question facing the AI industry isn't whether to embrace this new reality - it's whether to do so voluntarily or have it imposed by regulators and courts. Companies that continue to rely on the old playbook of post-incident apologies will find themselves increasingly isolated in a world demanding AI industry's true maturity will show not in flashy demos or sky-high valuations, but in its commitment to safety over speed, rigour over shortcuts, and real accountability over empty apologies. Mumbai: Indian students won two gold and two silver medals at the 57th International Chemistry Olympiad 2025 held in Dubai, UAE, from July 5 to 14. Devesh Bhaiya from Maharashtra's Jalgaon and Sandeep Kuchi from Hyderabad bagged the gold medals at the international event. Debadatta Priyadarshi from Odisha and Ujjwal Kesari from New Delhi won the silver medals. India stood sixth among the participating countries in the medals tally, along with Ukraine, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, and Israel. This year, the event saw participation from 354 students from 90 countries. This was India's 26th appearance at the Chemistry Olympiad. Over the years, 30% of the Indian participants won gold medals, 53% silver, and 17% bronze. In the last ten appearances, the percentages of gold and silver medals were 38% and 58%, respectively. The Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education-TIFR remains the nodal centre for training and selecting students to represent the country at various international Olympiads. The National Olympiad Examinations conducted by HBCSE serve as the gateway for final team selection. Researchers discover new species of diurnal gecko in Assam

1 2 3 Guwahati: A new species of diurnal (day-active) gecko, measuring between 30.8 to 35.7 mm from snout to vent, has been discovered in Assam . The species has been named 'Cnemaspis Brahmaputra' in homage to the Brahmaputra river, enriching India's reptilian diversity. The discovery was detailed in the scientific journal Taprobanica: The Journal of Asian Biodiversity by a team of researchers, including Amit Sayyed, Madhurima Das, AA Thasun Amarasinghe, Rupankar Bhattacharjee and herpetologist Jayaditya Purkayastha. Purkayastha said the new species belonged to the Cnemaspis Podihuna clade, a group of small, diurnal geckos previously believed to be largely restricted to Sri Lanka. "Its discovery in Assam strengthens the evidence for an ancient biogeographic link between Sri Lanka and the northeast, reflecting historical faunal exchanges across the Indian subcontinent. The species is genetically and morphologically distinct from its Sri Lankan relatives, showing significant evolutionary divergence," Purkayastha said. The discovery marks 'Cnemaspis Brahmaputra' as only the second species of the genus 'Cnemaspis' known from the northeast, the first being 'Cnemaspis Assamensis', described in 2000. Both species are members of the podihuna clade and are confined to the Brahmaputra river valley. However, they are found on opposite banks of the river and exhibit substantial genetic differences. The new species differs from 'Cnemaspis Assamensis' by about 6.0 to 7.2%, while showing a more pronounced divergence of 21.2 to 24.8% from its related species in Sri Lanka, based on differences in their ND2 genes. Purkayastha said the gecko was spotted on the premises of the Dirgheswari temple, located on the northern bank of the Brahmaputra.
