Huge weaponry discovered, 58 detained in Afghanistan
The weaponry, which included 45 pieces of pistols, seven pieces of Kalashnikovs, nine pieces of other types of assault rifles, hundreds of projectiles and other military equipment, was discovered during operations in the provincial capital Lashkar Gah and several districts over the past three months, the official said.
All the collected arms and ammunition were handed over to the concerned authorities recently, the official asserted.
Police have also taken into custody 58 individuals on charges of involvement in criminal activities such as theft, armed robbery, and murder, the official said, adding police won't allow anyone to create law and order problems in the province, Xinhua news agency reported.
In similar operations, police also reported the discovery of arms and ammunition, including 13 pieces of AK-47 and six rocket launchers, in Helmand's neighbouring Kandahar province on Saturday.
On July 5, the counter-terrorism police discovered a similar case, including more than 100 pieces of firearms, during a series of operations in the same province over the past two months, said a statement of the Ministry for Interior Affairs.
The 105 pieces of variety of assault rifles including 14 stocks of Kalashnikovs, 63 pieces of pistols, a rocket propelled grenade, some machineguns and more than 3,000 of bullets of light and heavy weapons have been recovered during operations in different parts of the province, the statement posted on the Ministry's X account added.
Police have also taken into custody a number of people for carrying arms illegally and handed them over to the judiciary for further investigation, the statement noted, without revealing the exact number of individuals detained back then.
In similar operations, police also discovered and seized six AK-47 assault rifles in the northern Sari Pul province the week before.

Government finds MNREGA digital attendance system is riddled with holes
Nearly four years after introducing digital attendance system for MNREGA workers and three years after making it mandatory, the government has discovered a whole range of ways the National Mobile Monitoring System (NMMS) platform used for the purpose is being 'misused' and has now added four layers of analog monitoring to plug the holes. On July 8, the Union Rural Development Ministry issued a 13-page note to the State governments on the issue. As per the Ministry's note, there were at least seven ways that the NMMS is allegedly being gamed, which, the government said, was undermining the credibility of the digital attendance system and leading to 'potential misuse of public funds'. The Ministry also cautioned that 'no relaxation will be given in matters concerning the misuse or manipulation of NMMS'. Under NMMS, geo-tagged photographs of the workers are to be uploaded twice a day. First when they arrive for work and then at the end of their shift. Only exception for the second round of photographing is offered at sites with 20 or below workers. It was found that 'irrelevant or unrelated photographs' were being uploaded. In many cases, 'photo-to-photo capturing instead of live work images' was being done. There was also 'mismatch in actual vs recorded count'. A mismatch in gender composition of workers was found at several work sites. The same photo of workers in multiple muster rolls, mismatch in workers in morning and afternoon photos and non-uploading of photos in the afternoon session are the other discrepancies flagged by the Rural Development Ministry. The Ministry has directed the States to ensure that these photographs and attendance of workers is verified at gram panchayat, block, district and State level. At gram panchayat level, they want 100% verification of the present workers. The percentage of physical verification of the uploaded photographs of workers reducing at different levels. So, while at the block level, 20% of the photos at random need to be verified, at the district level, this number is down to 10%, and at State level to 5%. The other significant change is that the government now allows for editing the muster rolls before making the wage bill. 'During the summer months, especially in Adivasi areas where large-scale MGNREGA work takes place, thousands of NMMS photos are generated daily. Detonators, Maoist literature recovered in Jamui forest
Patna: A joint team of Special Task Force (STF) and police in Jamui on Monday recovered 46 detonators, Maoist literature and uniforms during a raid in the forest area of Jamui district. Meanwhile, in another operation in Purnia district, an arms dealer was arrested by the joint team of police and STF. They seized a German pistol, a rotating bolt of an AK-47 assault rifle, and 440 cartridges of different pistols and rifles from his possession, said a press statement issued by the police headquarters on Monday. According to the press release, "In the forest and hilly area of Pachkatiya within the jurisdiction of Chihra police station in Jamui district, 46 detonators and other items, including Maoist literature, were recovered, which were hidden by the Left-wing extremists. The recovered items also include receipts, handwritten and computer-generated documents and files. A case was registered at Chihra police station in Jamui, and further action is being taken. " In another incident in Purnia district, the Patna STF and K Hat police station team conducted a joint raid and seized a large consignment of arms and ammunition late Sunday night. Arms smuggler, Kunal Singh, was arrested during the operation. "Based on the identification, the illegal firearms were recovered from a vegetable vendor's shop in the K Hat area. In this context, a case was registered at the K Hat police station, and further action is being taken.
