The weaponry, which included 45 pieces of pistols, seven pieces of Kalashnikovs, nine pieces of other types of assault rifles, hundreds of projectiles and other military equipment, was discovered during operations in the provincial capital Lashkar Gah and several districts over the past three months, the official said.

Police have also taken into custody 58 individuals on charges of involvement in criminal activities such as theft, armed robbery, and murder, the official said, adding police won't allow anyone to create law and order problems in the province, Xinhua news agency reported.
In similar operations, police also reported the discovery of arms and ammunition, including 13 pieces of AK-47 and six rocket launchers, in Helmand's neighbouring Kandahar province on Saturday.
On July 5, the counter-terrorism police discovered a similar case, including more than 100 pieces of firearms, during a series of operations in the same province over the past two months, said a statement of the Ministry for Interior Affairs.

Police have also taken into custody a number of people for carrying arms illegally and handed them over to the judiciary for further investigation, the statement noted, without revealing the exact number of individuals detained back then.
In similar operations, police also discovered and seized six AK-47 assault rifles in the northern Sari Pul province the week before.

Florida man who killed 2 people outside a bar is scheduled to be executed
Michael Bernard Bell, a man who fatally shot a man and woman outside a Florida bar STARKE: A man who fatally shot a man and woman outside a Florida bar as part of an attempted revenge killing is scheduled to be executed on Tuesday. Michael Bernard Bell, 54, is scheduled to receive a lethal injection at Florida State Prison near Starke, barring a last-day reprieve. He was convicted in 1995 and sentenced to death for the murders of Jimmy West and Tamecka Smith. Bell would be the eighth person put to death in Florida this year, with a ninth scheduled for later this month. The state executed six people in 2023, but carried out only one execution last year. Twenty-five men have already been executed in the US this year, tying last year's total. Florida has executed more people than any other state this year, while Texas and South Carolina are tied for second place with four each. Alabama has executed three people, Oklahoma has killed two, and Arizona, Indiana, Louisiana, Mississippi and Tennessee each have killed one. In December 1993, Bell spotted what he thought was the car of the man who fatally shot his brother earlier that year, according to court records. Bell was apparently unaware that the man had sold the car to West. Bell called on two friends and armed himself with an AK-47 rifle, authorities said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like An engineer reveals: One simple trick to get internet without a subscription Techno Mag Learn More Undo They found the car parked outside a liquor lounge and waited. When West, Smith and another woman eventually exited the club, Bell approached the car and opened fire, officials said. West died at the scene, and Smith died on the way to the hospital. The other woman escaped injury. Witnesses said Bell also fired at a crowd of onlookers before fleeing the area. He was eventually arrested the next year. Bell was later convicted of three additional murders. He fatally shot a woman and her toddler son in 1989, and he killed his mother's boyfriend about four months before the attack on West and Smith, officials said. Attorneys for Bell have filed appeals with the Florida Supreme Court and the US Supreme Court. The lawyers argued in their state filing that Bell's execution should be halted because of newly discovered evidence about witness testimony. But justices unanimously rejected the argument last week and pointed to overwhelming evidence of Bell's guilt in a 54-page opinion. Bell's attorneys filed a similar petition with the US supreme court on Thursday, but the panel has not yet issued a ruling.

Government finds MNREGA digital attendance system is riddled with holes
Nearly four years after introducing digital attendance system for MNREGA workers and three years after making it mandatory, the government has discovered a whole range of ways the National Mobile Monitoring System (NMMS) platform used for the purpose is being 'misused' and has now added four layers of analog monitoring to plug the holes. On July 8, the Union Rural Development Ministry issued a 13-page note to the State governments on the issue. As per the Ministry's note, there were at least seven ways that the NMMS is allegedly being gamed, which, the government said, was undermining the credibility of the digital attendance system and leading to 'potential misuse of public funds'. The Ministry also cautioned that 'no relaxation will be given in matters concerning the misuse or manipulation of NMMS'. Under NMMS, geo-tagged photographs of the workers are to be uploaded twice a day. First when they arrive for work and then at the end of their shift. Only exception for the second round of photographing is offered at sites with 20 or below workers. It was found that 'irrelevant or unrelated photographs' were being uploaded. In many cases, 'photo-to-photo capturing instead of live work images' was being done. There was also 'mismatch in actual vs recorded count'. A mismatch in gender composition of workers was found at several work sites. The same photo of workers in multiple muster rolls, mismatch in workers in morning and afternoon photos and non-uploading of photos in the afternoon session are the other discrepancies flagged by the Rural Development Ministry. The Ministry has directed the States to ensure that these photographs and attendance of workers is verified at gram panchayat, block, district and State level. At gram panchayat level, they want 100% verification of the present workers. The percentage of physical verification of the uploaded photographs of workers reducing at different levels. So, while at the block level, 20% of the photos at random need to be verified, at the district level, this number is down to 10%, and at State level to 5%. The other significant change is that the government now allows for editing the muster rolls before making the wage bill. So far, this could be done only at the District Collector's level, who also took action in case of complaints. Such amendments of the muster rolls were rare. Chakradhar Buddha, senior researcher, LibTech India, said that what was meant to be a technology-driven, corruption-resistant system is now entirely dependent on manual checks by frontline workers. 'This defeats the very purpose of introducing a digital attendance system,' he added. The government's directions, he said, will be difficult to comply. 'During the summer months, especially in Adivasi areas where large-scale MGNREGA work takes place, thousands of NMMS photos are generated daily. Verifying these images demands staff capacity and technical infrastructure that simply don't exist on the ground,' Mr. Buddha said.
