Centre flags misuse of agriculture urea in AP

Vijayawada: The Union Govt has raised serious concerns over the rising use of agriculture-grade urea in several states, including Andhra Pradesh, amid suspicions of diversion for non-agricultural and industrial purposes. Responding to directives from the Union agriculture secretary and cabinet secretary, the Andhra Pradesh agriculture department is preparing to issue strict guidelines to curb misuse. Director of agriculture Dilli Rao said the Centre observed a sharp increase in urea usage during the current Kharif season — 3.88 lakh metric tonnes compared to 3 lakh metric tonnes last year — an excess of 88,000 metric tonnes. Urea, intended solely for crop cultivation, is reportedly being diverted for use in industries such as plywood, varnish, paint, AdBlue solution, beer, illicit liquor manufacturing, aquaculture, poultry and animal feed. Some of it is allegedly smuggled across borders into neighbouring states. In Andhra Pradesh, several districts — including NTR, Eluru, Palnadu, Kurnool, Anantapur, Sri Sathya Sai, Chittoor, Tirupati, ASR, Manyam, Visakhapatnam, and Srikakulam — share borders with Telangana, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Odisha, and Chhattisgarh, raising the risk of cross-border transportation. A high-level meeting, led by the chief secretary, will soon finalise enforcement strategies. Coordination with the transport department is also being planned to monitor movement across state lines. Dilli Rao added that district-level meetings will follow, involving district collectors, joint collectors and industrial stakeholders. Sales data will be scrutinised to identify unusual buying patterns.

Telangana govt urges centre for immediate urea supply to safeguard crop yields

States » South Hyderabad, Aug 5 (UNI) Telangana Agriculture Minister Tummala Nageswara Rao has urged the Central government to ensure an immediate supply of urea to the state, warning that any delay could seriously affect crop yields. In a letter to Union Chemicals and Fertilizers Minister J P Nadda, the minister said that urea is essential as a top-up for crops like rice, cotton, and maize in August, and a shortage during this peak usage period could impact farmers heavily. Currently, the state has 1.09 lakh metric tonnes of urea, but at least 3 lakh metric tonnes are required this month to meet demand. From April 1 to July 31, Telangana was supposed to receive 6.60 lakh metric tonnes of urea but only 4.51 lakh metric tonnes were supplied. Meanwhile, farmers have already purchased 5.70 lakh metric tonnes, exhausting the state's initial stocks. For August, the Centre has allocated 1.70 lakh metric tonnes, with 1.31 lakh metric tonnes from domestic sources and 0.39 lakh metric tonnes from imports. However, the minister noted that shipment details for the imported stock are still awaited. He added that PPL (11,000 MT) and MCFL (7,000 MT) have expressed their inability to supply their allotted domestic quota, creating an additional shortfall of 18,000 MT. Nageswara Rao requested that the shortfall of 2.10 lakh metric tonnes from April to July be cleared in August. He also appealed for the imported 39,600 MT of urea to reach the state before August 20 and suggested that RFCL be directed to make up the shortfall from PPL and MCFL. He stressed that urgent intervention by the Centre is crucial to prevent any disruption in the ongoing Kharif season and to ensure sufficient urea for farmers. Telangana MP writes to Union Minister JP Nadda over urea shortage in Kharif season

Congress leader and Bhongir MP Chamal Kiran Kumar Reddy has written to Union Minister for Chemicals and Fertilizers JP Nadda, raising alarm over a significant shortfall in the supply of urea to Telangana during the ongoing Kharif his letter, Reddy pointed out that while the state's total urea allocation for the season stands at 9.80 lakh metric tonnes (LMT), only 4.36 LMT had been supplied as of July 31, falling short by 2.24 LMT against the 6.60 LMT expected for the April–July situation is expected to worsen in August, with the MP noting that although the actual requirement for the month is nearly 3.50 LMT, only 1.70 LMT has been allocated. This mismatch between requirement and supply is causing severe distress among farmers, especially those cultivating key crops like cotton, maize, and paddy. Highlighting the urgency, Reddy recalled that Telangana Chief Minister Anumula Revanth Reddy had already flagged the issue with Minister Nadda, underlining the impact on farmers during the peak agricultural season. The MP said farmers across the state are anxiously awaiting urea to meet their crop also noted that the problem is not limited to Telangana, with farmers in neighbouring states like Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka reportedly facing similar issues due to the non-supply of allocated the situation 'critical,' Reddy urged the Union Minister to ensure that the Centre delivers the full allocation to Telangana as per the February 17, 2025, fertilizer allocation letter, to address the real-time demands of the farming community.- EndsMust Watch IN THIS STORY#Telangana
