
McCann Content Studios expands footprint to Saudi Arabia
Operating as part of creative network FP7 McCann in Riyadh, the studio aims to meet clients' requirement for social media-led campaigns and influencer partnerships.
'Our expansion into Saudi Arabia is a strategic step forward — not just in footprint, but in how we partner with brands in a market that continues to lead regional transformation,' Tarek Miknas, CEO of FP7 McCann Middle East, North Africa and Turkiye, told Arab News.
He added: 'For us, this is about more than scaling services; it's about building enduring partnerships rooted in trust, performance and relevance — and ensuring we're structurally set up to support the ambitions of the Kingdom's most dynamic brands.'
The studio first launched just over a year ago and has since doubled in size, with operations across Dubai, Cairo and Beirut.
It employs more than 100 people, and its services include strategy, creative, social, influencer marketing, production, community management and performance tracking.
Fahad Mugharbel, social media director of FP7 McCann, will lead the practice from Riyadh. Before joining FP7 McCann in April, he worked at Saudi-based entertainment firm UTURN for more than four years.
The Kingdom is defined by 'pace, ambition and evolving expectations,' and clients believe 'content must do more,' said Amr El-Kalaawy, regional managing director of FP7 McCann Saudi Arabia.
The move is therefore a 'natural next step in our growth — one that reflects both the scale of opportunity and the level of partnership our clients expect,' he added.
Going forward, McCann Content Studios plans to expand its 'capabilities in data-led content performance and deepen our creator ecosystem,' El-Kalaawy said.

MENA startup funding rises 1,411% mom to $783m
RIYADH: Startup investment across the Middle East and North Africa accelerated sharply in July, with total funding reaching $783 million across 57 deals. The rise marks a 1,411 percent increase from June and more than double the amount raised in July 2024, positioning the third quarter of 2025 for robust regional growth, according to Wamda's monthly report. The increase was driven primarily by two megadeals, highlighting sustained investor appetite for later-stage, high-growth opportunities. Saudi Arabia led regional funding activity, securing $396.5 million across 16 deals, while the UAE followed with $359 million raised in 22 startups. The Kingdom's performance was boosted by three major rounds, including Q-commerce platform Ninja's $250 million raise led by Riyad Capital, propelling it to unicorn status, foodtech startup Calo's $39 million series B extension, and SaaS provider Lucidya's $30 million series B. The funding landscape saw notable shifts among emerging ecosystems. Iraq claimed third place with a single $15 million transaction for InstaBank, moving ahead of the traditional heavyweight Egypt. Morocco followed in fourth, propelled by Ora Technologies' $7.5 million round. Egypt, once consistently in the top three, dropped to fifth place, recording just $4 million in funding across seven startups. Analysts cite macroeconomic headwinds, including currency instability, as contributing factors to Egypt's diminished share. By sector, deeptech overtook fintech for the first time in several months, drawing $250.3 million from four deals. E-commerce matched deeptech in total funding, also raising $250 million, driven by Ninja's record-setting round. Software-as-a-service startups came third, attracting $89 million across 12 deals, while fintech dropped to fourth, with $61 million raised in 11 transactions. A time to be bold and think big on urbanization
There is a global quest for urban innovation that enables cities to grow in ways that optimize space, enhance livability, and reduce the pressure on natural resources. Society is now acutely aware of major global environmental challenges. Climate change, pollution, desertification, and deforestation and biodiversity loss are topics frequently discussed worldwide. However, less commonly recognized are the profound implications of the thousands of new cities we will need to construct this century to accommodate the projected surge in the global population. The regions most significantly impacted by this will include Africa, China, India and the Middle East. With an estimated 11.6 billion people expected to inhabit the planet by the end of the century, we have entered an era of unprecedented urbanization. Humanity is creating what urbanists Greg Clark and Borane Gille describe as a 'planet of cities.' UN modeling projects that by 2100, the global urban population will increase from 2.6 billion to 9.6 billion. The number of cities with more than a million residents will grow from 275 to about 1,600. This equates to constructing more than 1,000 major cities in the next 75 years. Whether nature can withstand this burden remains uncertain and is a matter of growing concern. The impact extends beyond how people live in cities: commuting, eating, cooling and cooking. The very process of building these cities will likely become one of the largest contributors to climate change. The construction and operation of urban spaces form a major global industry, encompassing real estate, infrastructure, utilities, transport, technology, and an array of associated goods and services. Construction activities currently account for approximately 40 percent of annual global energy consumption and 36 percent of greenhouse gas emissions. The production of essential materials — steel, aluminum, cement, concrete and plastic — is energy-intensive and generates considerable pollution. The UN Environment Program underlines the fact that decarbonizing materials is vital for reducing emissions throughout the life cycle of buildings. Overall, evidence shows that we are building and operating cities beyond safe environmental limits. Given the rapid pace of urban development, the challenge is to do better; to achieve sustainability standards that not only protect the environment but ideally restore resilience for future generations. Solving the problem of sustainable cities is both a wicked challenge and a tremendous opportunity. The scale, complexity and urgency are daunting but the potential for innovation is enormous. Addressing this will unleash new technologies and usher in a green, smart economy. In 2022, I learned that Saudi Arabia was constructing the world's first sustainable city: NEOM, a transformative, giga-scale project on the northern Red Sea coast. This city is envisioned as carbon-neutral, car-free, nature-positive, powered by renewable energy, and built with advanced technologies to meet bold environmental standards. Such ambition, vision and scale are precisely what the current era requires. Projects such as NEOM inspire visionary leadership and the scaling of innovation necessary to move beyond incremental change and open the door to transformational progress. During my three years as chief environment officer in this project, I witnessed NEOM already changing the supply of construction materials and goods, helping international companies and construction sectors transition toward clean manufacturing, renewable energy, and circular-economy principles. With an estimated 11.6 billion people expected to inhabit the planet by the end of the century, we have entered an era of unprecedented urbanization. Richard Bush There are encouraging signs that NEOM and other giga-projects across the Middle East — such as Red Sea Global, Diriyah, Qiddiya, and Murrabba — are making a global impact, as highlighted by reports from the likes of the World Economic Forum and the G20's Urban 20 initiative. NEOM's influence is driven by its massive scale, aggressive timelines, and the high expectations set by its leadership for climate, decarbonization, environmental and livability standards, nature conservation, and operational efficiency — which are achievable only through systemic change. When a giga-project such as NEOM solves a problem, the global construction industry benefits, future cities benefit and, ultimately, all of society benefits. This demonstrates why large, ambitious projects are essential if we are to achieve both human progress and environmental sustainability in coming decades. So, where will we find the inspiration, strategy and commitment to drive the construction industry's transition to sustainability? Who will be involved and who will take responsibility? Business will be central to driving the sustainability transition for one good reason: it promises a competitive advantage in a rapidly changing marketplace. Conservative economists and seasoned business leaders alike are reading the situation and moving quickly to adapt. Demand for green goods and services is experiencing substantial growth that is expected to continue for many decades based on current forecasts. Sustainability credentials are emerging as strong market differentiators, partly because of new regulations and standards set by governments that will not tolerate environmentally damaging industries and, more importantly, the conscious choice of customers, such as NEOM, who prioritize sustainability along with cost and quality. As citizens, we can all play a role in supporting and influencing businesses and governments to make the right choices when it comes to sustainability. There are encouraging signs of progress on a global scale, according to recent reports from leading organizations such as the WEF, UN Environment Programme, World Building Council, and U20. For example, the First Movers Coalition, established by the WEF, brings together global companies leveraging collective purchasing power to create a credible demand signal for change. Similarly, the First Suppliers Hub is a global repository of innovative and emerging products needed for decarbonization by 2050 in sectors such as aluminum, cement, concrete, steel, aviation, shipping and transport. These examples demonstrate alternatives to the old business rules of competition and counterproductive isolationism, making way for new types of strategic collaboration founded on a shared interest in addressing sustainability. Saudi Arabia is showing its willingness to lean into the global challenge of building a sustainable future with courage, creativity, determination and proactive collaboration. Hopefully this example will inspire action. On a personal level, it was exciting to be part of NEOM and to work alongside some of the greatest minds and change-makers. All at sea: UK sends wrong signal on Gulf naval role
The British government recently announced that HMS Lancaster, a Royal Navy frigate permanently based in the Gulf, will return to the UK for scrapping by the end of the year. This will leave the UK without a permanent forward-based destroyer or frigate in the Gulf for the first time in many years. The decision comes at a bad time, given the fragile state of maritime security in the region. The removal of Britain's last warship from the Gulf, despite these realities, is reminiscent of US President Joe Biden's 2013 decision to withdraw all American tanks from Europe for the first time since the Second World War — only to see Russia invade Ukraine the following year. The Gulf region matters to the UK for many reasons. Britain's ties with the Gulf states stretch back decades, and in some cases centuries. The first recorded instance of the Royal Navy entering the Gulf occurred in 1620, when the East India Company sought to dislodge Portuguese influence from the region. Economically, the Gulf is one of the UK's most important trading regions outside Europe and North America, with billions in goods and services exchanged each year. British companies are heavily involved in the energy, finance, and defense sectors, while Gulf investment plays a major role in the UK economy, from infrastructure projects to property and technology ventures. Security cooperation has been just as important. Many Gulf countries have served alongside British forces in joint operations, whether in counter-piracy patrols off the Horn of Africa, counter-terrorism missions in the wider Middle East, or maritime security cooperation in the Gulf itself. These shared missions have built strong operational ties and mutual trust between the UK and its Gulf partners, strengthening both regional stability and the global commons. Gulf investment plays a major role in the British economy Luke Coffey The UK military continues to play a significant role in training and, in some cases, equipping the armed forces of the region, fostering close professional bonds among senior officers. The Royal Navy, in particular, holds a special place, with the UK ranking second only to the US in terms of foreign naval influence in the Gulf. The UK has also reduced its mine countermeasures vessels in the region, a vital asset given Iran's repeated threats to close the Strait of Hormuz. A Royal Fleet Auxiliary support ship traditionally stationed in the Gulf has also been brought home, with no plans for its return. The Labour government's own 2025 Strategic Defense Review, a document it describes as a 'root-and-branch' analysis of Britain's national security and armed forces, runs to 144 pages, but devotes only about half a page to the Gulf. It does highlight, though concisely, the importance of the region, stating: 'The Middle East is significant to UK security and prosperity due to its position as an artery of global trade and its role in global energy supplies. The UK's footprint in the region and increased investment in strategic defense partnerships supports the government's economic growth agenda.' If Prime Minister Keir Starmer truly sees the Gulf as a geopolitical priority, his first year in government has done little to prove it. By contrast, when the Conservatives returned to power in 2010 after 13 years in opposition, David Cameron moved quickly to elevate relations with the region. He immediately launched the Gulf Initiative, a cross-government effort to deepen relationships with the Gulf Cooperation Council states. This paid off handsomely. In 2011 alone, UK exports to Gulf countries exceeded those to India, Russia, and Mexico combined. By contrast, under Starmer there has been no comparable deepening of relations, apart from the approaching completion of a GCC–UK free trade agreement — an effort that began under the previous Conservative government. The removal of HMS Lancaster from the Gulf and its scrapping by the end of this year is part of a wider maritime crunch facing the Royal Navy. Once Lancaster leaves service, the fleet will be reduced to just six destroyers and six frigates — the lowest number in modern history. This downsizing comes at a time when global shipping volumes are increasing and the threats to maritime trade are growing. For a globally engaged, free-trading island nation such as Britain, these choices are difficult to reconcile with its strategic posture. Under Starmer there has been no deepening of relations Luke Coffey In the 2025 Strategic Defense Review, Starmer reaffirmed that the UK would pursue a 'NATO-first' policy — an approach that makes sense. Yet this does not mean Britain can neglect other key regions, particularly the Middle East. In recent years, NATO has moved to strengthen ties with the Gulf states and expand cooperation on issues such as maritime security, counter-terrorism, and regional stability. One of NATO's strengths is that different member states bring different contributions to the table. Since Britain is a global power with global interests, its reach and capabilities help NATO act more effectively beyond the Euro-Atlantic area. The UK's decision to scale back its naval presence in the Gulf runs counter to this dynamic, undermining one of the most significant ways Britain can contribute to NATO's efforts in the Middle East. Britain cannot afford to send the wrong message to friends or foes about its staying power in strategically vital regions. The Gulf is not only a hub of global commerce and energy but also a testing ground for Britain's ability to project influence and safeguard the rules-based order beyond Europe.
