I tested 5 viral foundations in the gym to see which were ‘sweaty summer proof' – an £11 buy was a winner

The Sun13-05-2025
WHILE there is no better feeling than enjoying glorious sunshine on your skin - with SPF, of course - beauty buffs absolutely despise the hotter days when the foundation slides and melts off in an instant.
While some prefer to go bare-faced or rock a tinted moisturiser, if you're a fake tan fanatic like me, you'll know that's not really an option - as the lighter tints won't match the rest of your Oompa Loompa complexion.
So, to find out which budget-friendly foundations are summer sweat-proof, I tried out five viral make-up buys, all £15 or under.
To see which foundations would perform the best in sweltering temperatures, I put them under the ultimate test - my two-hour long gym sessions, which included both weightlifting and cardio.
In order to give them a fair chance, I followed the exact same beauty routine with each - beginning with hyaluronic acid, a serum, moisturiser, sunscreen, and topping the foundation off with a bit of powder.
Here are the ones that stayed intact - and the ones that left random patches on my face.
L'Oreal Infaillible 32h Fresh Wear, £13.99
12
This red-lidded foundation has been around for a years now, and pulls in rave 4.3-star ratings.
Formulated with Vitamin C, L'Oreal Infaillable Fresh Wear foundation offers full coverage yet feels lightweight on your skin - it's really a win-win.
The best part? I also found that you don't need to apply heaps to achieve the results you're after - so a little goes a long way.
I wore this SPF 25 foundation on a Monday - which are my heavy leg days in a gym where air conditioning doesn't seem to be a thing, and decided to torture myself even more by hopping onto the stair master for a further 20 minutes.
As I was contemplating this poor decision (amongst many others), I felt the sweat dripping on my forehead and feared I was looking like a hot, patchy mess.
But to my surprise, once I took a quick look at the reflection on the mirror, the foundation was still there - although there were some slight patches around my nose and just underneath my hairline.
I'm a fake tan pro and have tested all of them - a £22.99 option left me GREEN, but a £3.49 bargain is always a 10/10
Sweatproof rating: 4/5
L'Oreal True Match, £11.99
12
L'Oreal True Match - available at Boots for just £11.99 - has been around for as long as I can remember.
Now available in a whopping 48 shades, this high street number provides perfect, natural and true-to-skin coverage.
Not only is it enriched with hyaluronic acid that provides up to 24-hour hydration, the foundation also has bold claims to '' improve skin quality in two weeks''.
While I wasn't able to test out the latter, I sure can tell you that the wallet-friendly foundation is gym girl-approved.
I put it to test on one of the hottest days the UK has seen this year and was shocked to see that not even 40 minutes of intense cardio could smudge it, even a little.
After I got home following the treadmill torture, the sweat had dried up - and the overall complexion looked almost as good as it had before the gym session, apart from the slight patch under my eyes.
Sweatproof rating: 5/5
e.l.f. Halo Glow Liquid Filter, £15
12
One of the more affordable brands on the high-street, e.l.f. has truly surprised me as of late, whether it's their brow pencil or liquid contour.
So when I spotted e.l.f. Halo Glow Liquid Filter on the shelves I snapped it up without much hesitation - especially after reading the thousands of rave reviews.
Although this is theoretically not a foundation, it can be worn as make-up and I found that with a few layers you can achieve the desired level of coverage.
However, do be warned - you will be left looking like a glazed doughnut and it's best to have your go-to powder at the ready.

Superdrug Solait Self Tan Mousse Medium - £4.79 (was £5.99) - Buy Now
Tester: Abby Wilson, Senior Fabulous Digital Writer
Review: "This product give a very natural looking tan and if you wanted something a bit bolder, I'd suggest leaving it on longer or choosing a darker shade. I'm impressed with the results, but now my entire room stinks of the stuff. If you're on a budget and want a tan for last-minute plans, I would say this is one to try. "
bBold Dream Mousse Tan in Dark - £9.50 - Buy Now
Tester: Josie O'Brien, Senior Fabulous Digital Writer
Review: "The first thing that hit me about this tan was the 'juicy watermelon' scent - it's delicious. I was left with a natural bronze hue rather than orange glow. My only qualm is that the tan seemed to stick to my dry patches and accentuated 'strawberry skin' on my legs. I'm still adding this tan to my arsenal though - the smell, colour and texture are dreamy."
St Moriz Professional Medium Tanning Mousse - £4.99 - Buy Now
Tester: Kate Kulniece, Fabulous Writer
Review: "Not only does St. Moriz mousse leave you with a gorgeous bronzed glow, but it also smells fabulous - think Piña Colada on a sunny beach. At first, I was a little bit sceptical cause I'm a gradual fake tan girlie, but this quick developing St. Moriz number may change it all."
While I may have looked more shiny than I like to, this foundation hybrid didn't feel too cakey - and best of all, got me heaps of compliments at the gym.
I wore the £15 beauty bag must-have in sweltering 29C heat - and not only did it survive the muggy weather but also an intense lower body session, followed by 30 minutes on the stairmaster and some skipping.
While I quite enjoyed this product - which can even be used a highlighter - it's currently available in just 12 shades, only four or which are suited for darker complexions.
Sweatproof rating: 4/5
Maybelline Super Stay 24H Foundation + Vitamin C, £13.99
Whether it's their Sky High mascara or cheap lippies, Maybelline has been a firm staple in my make-up bag ever since I got into beauty as a teenager.
As someone who has an oily skin, I was a little hesitant trying Maybelline Super Stay 24H Foundation as Vitamin C products usually offer more glowy results - but much to my surprise, it gave me a natural radiance.
This make-up buy, priced at £13.99 at Superdrug, is great if you're a vegan like me, as it contains no animal-derived ingredients or by-products.
Right after applying it on my face, I was amazed at the healthy glow and how smooth my mega pores looked.
However, the biggest winner is that the foundation lived up to its promises - and resisted the intense workout and the mini treadmill run I did at the gym.
While there was a teeny bit of creasing under my eyes, the purse-friendly foundation stayed intact and almost glued to my face - a real winner if you've got a sunny holiday coming up or if you're a cardio bunny.
Sweatproof rating: 5/5
Rimmel Lasting Finish 35 Hour Foundation, £10.99
12
Available in more than 30 shades, Rimmel Lasting Finish 35 Hour Foundation is one of the cheapest on the high street, setting you back just £10.99 at Boots.
This full-coverage beauty bag buy has a natural-looking finish with SPF20 - which is always an added bonus if you've run out of sunscreen.
The cruelty-free and vegan formula also boasts hyaluronic acid, vitamin E and 2% niacinamide, so not only will your skin be red carpet-ready - you'll also treat it with a whole lot of goodness.
Although I found the make-up buy on the thicker side, the end finish was pretty natural - but you can always go heavier to achieve a fuller coverage.
More than an hour of weight-lifting and 30 minutes of cardio later, the foundation had survived and my skin looked just as flawless as it did at the start of the session - despite the excessive sweating.
Sweatproof rating: 5/5

Everything inside the £250 Harrods beauty advent calendar 2025

Harrods is renowned for many things, from its Grade II listed building to its green-robed doormen and its over-the-top Christmas decorations. But another thing stands out at Christmas: the brand's beauty advent calendar. It sounds ludicrously early, but every August, the big luxury department stores drop the first glimpses of their beauty advent calendars for the festive season ahead. This year, Liberty was the first to debut its Christmas countdown (in July, no less), with Harvey Nichols, Selfridges (explore my full list of 2025's best beauty advent calendars) and Harrods following shortly after. Last year, the retailer's 25-day beauty haul came wrapped up in its signature green hue, but one year on, the brand has taken things down a notch with minimalist taupe packaging, complete with subtle gold accents. However, there are some similarities to 2024's advent calendar, with return appearances from fan-favourite brands including Augustinus Bader, 111 Skin, La Mer and more. Plus, if you like a bit of a shake-up, you'll be pleased to discover an extra seven products in 2025's line-up – all for the same £250 price point ( Scroll on for all the juicy details, including my honest review of everything inside. Spoilers ahead. How we tested Receiving the Harrods calendar on 29 July (22 days before its market-wide dispatch on 20 August), I've had three weeks to explore the 32 products within, testing them as part of my day-to-day skincare, make-up, fragrance, haircare and body care routines. While unboxing and reviewing them, I noted the following factors: Packaging – Some of the appeal of a luxury advent calendar is often the possibility that you could repurpose the packaging the following year, so I wanted it to look good and feel robust. I also weighed up the pros and cons of the brand's neutral colour choices versus a traditional Christmas theme. Sizing – I considered whether or not the number of full-size and mini formulas was impressive for the retail price, and judged the sizing of each item relative to its use. For instance, is an 8ml SPF cream an asset or just clutter? Brands – I considered the worth of the brands included and their quality. Ideally, I want a healthy mix of buzzy beauty and timeless brands. I wanted both practical, effective beauty as well as some extravagant, luxury products. Performance – After using the products included, I recorded any that wowed me, and any that felt like fillers. Distinctive qualities – Compared to other beauty advent calendars on the market, I took time to assess whether or not Harrods' offering stands out from the crowd or is much the same as competitors. Lucy Smith has been writing about the best beauty advent calendars for several years, covering 2024's Sephora advent calendar and 2025's Charlotte Tilbury, Boots and Space NK calendars. Having worked in the industry for more than five years, she's seen many Christmas countdowns and knows the brands – like Mac and Rodial – that are frequently featured, plus the ones making a splash in new offerings for 2025. Given that she is constantly testing the latest and greatest brands (such as her tests of the new K18 heat protectors and Clinique nude honey lipsticks), Lucy is across all the trending products to expect in advent calendars this Christmas. Here's what she thought of Harrods' latest iteration.

We quit our £42K jobs to live for just £8 a day in a caravan – we'll never go back to a ‘normal' home or pay bills again

A COUPLE who quit their day jobs to live off-grid in a static caravan say it costs just £8.87 a day and has made their relationship stronger. Libby Ramsden, 25, and her partner, Ollie Blackwell, 26, made the switch to fully off-grid life in September 2023 to save money and allow them to leave their jobs and run their soap business. 8 8 8 They say it now costs them just £8.87 a day to live or £269 a month - including rent, council tax and heating. They live fully off-grid - with no TV or WiFi - and collect rainwater, use a log burner for heat and power their home with a tractor-driven generator. Libby worked as a laboratory assistant on a £24k salary, while Ollie was a farmer and tractor mechanic - earning £20k a year. The couple wanted their own space and lower living costs than the average rent and bills of £1k-a-month in their area - to enable them to start their company. Libby, business owner, from Silsden, West Yorkshire, said: "The best part is not relying on anybody at all. "Nobody dictates to us what our electric bills are, we are not tied to any contracts in any way. "We rely on ourselves. It's just the freedom to live how we want to live." Before going off-grid, both were living in normal houses with parents, paying them rent, and wanted to move in together cheaply. The idea came after their goat's milk soap and honey business, Herd and Hive, started to grow rapidly. Libby began making goats' milk soap after being given a goat named Mary by a neighbour - and her dad, Matthew, 53, started keeping bees as a hobby. I bought a 1997 static caravan for £5k & am transforming it into my dream tiny home with DIY & Dunelm buys When they combined the two at a market, they sold out and demand kept increasing. Six months later, they needed someone full-time in the business - and living inexpensively was the only way to make it work. Ollie's dad, Terry, 60, a farmer, offered to rent them a piece of land and they bought a static caravan for £11k - setting it up off-grid. They collect rainwater from a barn roof, filter it for the caravan and their animals, and run a tractor-powered generator for an hour each night to cook, shower and charge phones. Heating and cooking is done on a log burner. The couple are soon hoping to install solar panels, to reduce costs further. As they pay council tax, they get regular bin collections - and Ollie dug a septic tank so the couple have a flushing toilet. Libby said: "People think that because we live off-grid we are not connected to the world in any way or we live uncomfortably. "People think that we go to the toilet in a bucket and carry it out." 8 8 CHEAP COSTS The running costs of their unique off-grid home are just £8.87 a day, working out at £270 a month. Libby, who documents their off-grid journey on the TikTok account @herdandhive, said: "Before we moved we looked at renting, or getting a mortgage for a house and in the area that we live you're looking at anything up to £1,000 a month. "It was a no brainer if we wanted to quit our jobs." 8 Their day starts at 5.30am milking goats, feeding sheep, and caring for five rehomed donkeys before heading to their unit to make soap, jar honey and tend to bees. In the evening, they return to feed the animals again, light the fire, and run the generator for an hour before switching it off for the night. Libby said: "Most people in the evening will sit down and watch TV, we're not in that routine, so we feel a little bit more connected to each other. "We have a better relationship because we actually sit and talk in the evening. "It's definitely improved our relationship, we feel more connected to each other than if we had a lot more distractions in our life. "We don't have a TV so we generally read or keep each other company talking. "People love that we have no TV and no WiFi." But sometimes the couple do miss the ease of modern life. 8 Living costs before and after The couple's costs per month before Board to parents - £100 Food - £200 Total - £300 The couple's costs per month now they're off grid Land rent - £166 Council tax - £83 Tractor fuel - £20 Logs - £0 Rainwater - £0 Total - £269 Average costs for 'regular' living in the area Rent - £755 Bills - £200 Council tax - £83 Total - £1,083 TOUGH PARTS Libby said: "Sometimes I miss the ease of being able to flip a light switch on or plug your phone into charge, that type of thing. Just the ease of things. "Sometimes in winter I miss it when you've had a hard day but the benefits definitely outweigh it." Winter is the toughest time - the caravan is on top of a windy hill and keeping warm is a challenge - but the couple want to stay off-grid for good, eventually upgrading to a wooden chalet. "We do see ourselves living off grid forever," Libby said. 'We don't want to go back to living in a house and having bills to pay, but we definitely want to improve our off-grid life." 8 How much does it cost to live in a caravan? LIVING in a caravan can be an economical and flexible lifestyle choice in the UK. Here's a breakdown of potential costs: Initial Costs Caravan Purchase: £8,000 - £40,000 (depending on size, age, and condition) Caravan Insurance: £200 - £800 per year Ongoing Monthly Costs Pitch Fees: £150 - £600 (varies by location and facilities) Utilities (Electricity, Gas, Water): £40 - £120 Maintenance and Repairs: £20 - £80 Internet and TV: £20 - £50 Gas for Heating/Cooking: £15 - £40 Other Potential Costs Waste Disposal Fees: £8 - £25 Transport Costs (if moving locations): Variable, depending on distance Optional Add-ons (Awning, Solar Panels, etc.): £400 - £1,600 (one-time) Sample Monthly Budget Pitch Fees: £400 Utilities: £80 Maintenance and Repairs: £40 Internet and TV: £40 Gas for Heating/Cooking: £25 Total: £585 Annual Estimated Cost Total Monthly Costs: £585 x 12 = £7,020 Insurance: £500 Maintenance and Repairs: £480 Total Annual Cost: £8,000 Tips to Save Off-Peak Pitch Fees: Look for lower rates during off-peak seasons. DIY Maintenance: Handle minor repairs yourself. Energy Efficiency: Invest in solar panels to reduce utility costs. While initial setup costs can be significant, ongoing expenses for living in a caravan can be relatively low, making it a viable option for those seeking an affordable and mobile lifestyle in the UK.

Sasha Attwood flaunts her chiselled midriff in sizzling bikini-clad snaps as she shares glimpse into her Italian getaway with boyfriend Jack Grealish and their daughter Mila, 11 months

Sasha Attwood displayed her incredible figure in a slew of sizzling snaps from her sun-soaked holiday to Italy with her boyfriend Jack Grealish and their baby daughter, Mila. The model, 28, took to Instagram on Sunday to share a glimpse into the family's lavish getaway and flaunt her toned physique in a number of bikini shots. Posing up a storm on the deck of private boat, she slipped into a stylish cream two-piece that showed off her chiselled abs and long legs. While she also shared a sweet shot of her footballer boyfriend, 29, cuddling their baby girl, 11 months, onboard the luxury vessel. Sasha and Jack - who have been together since school - also proudly posed for a family snap with Mila, all dressed up to the nines for a day out during their balmy holiday. Sasha sent temperatures soaring in a lemon yellow maxidress covered in layered ruffles, while Mila looked adorable in a sweet baby pink dress as she clung affectionately to her dad. Further shots showed the mother-of-one continuing to display her chic fashion sense in a plunging pink satin dress, complete with a matching pink Chanel handbag. After over a decade together, Sasha and Jack welcomed their first child, Mila Rose Grealish, in September 2024. Mila's arrival was announced on Instagram by her footballer father, with Sasha calling it 'the most special moment of my life'. However, despite his joy at becoming a dad, Jack described 2024 as one of the hardest years of his life as he fought for his place in Manchester City. The year saw him spend more time that he would have liked on the bench instead of on the pitch and also narrowly miss out on a spot in England's Euro team. After mounting speculation, last week Everton confirmed that they had signed Jack on a season-long loan, with a £50million option to make the move permanent next season. After falling out of favour under City boss Pep Guardiola, he will now look to resurrect his career at Everton. Daily Mail Sport revealed on Monday how the England player had made financial sacrifices to push through the loan switch. Jack, who earns around £300,000 a week plus sponsorships at City, has, according to Everton sources, gone 'above and beyond' to make the deal happen. The move across the North West also means he does not have to uproot his young family. In his first words since joining Everton, Jack said: 'I'm over the moon to have signed for Everton - It's massive for me, honestly. This is a great club, with great fans. 'As soon as I spoke to the manager, I knew there was only one place that I wanted to go. On social media, I've been flooded with messages from Everton supporters, so there's that side of it as well and that's another reason why I chose Everton. 'I want to say thank you to the fans for all of the messages I've had already. Thank you for all of the love and support. I hope I can repay you now and I'm sure I will.' Speaking about taking on the No 18 shirt at Everton, he explained: 'There is a reason for [choosing number 18]. There were other numbers but my two favourite English players ever are Wayne Rooney and Paul Gascoigne and I know they both wore number 18 here. 'So, as soon as I knew this deal was close, I had a look and number 18 was free, so that was perfect for me and it was the only number I was going to take from that point. 'I spoke to Wayne before I came here and I mentioned that to him – about the number 18 – so I hope he's happy as well!' After mounting speculation, last week Everton confirmed that they had signed Jack on a season-long loan, with a £50million option to make the move permanent next season After spending the majority of last season on the periphery of City's first team, making only seven league starts, Jack has been convinced by manager David Moyes that Everton can provide him with the platform to rekindle his form of old and stake a claim for Thomas Tuchel's England World Cup squad. Moyes said: 'We welcome Jack to Everton, and we're very pleased to have him on board. I think we're getting him at a good time because he's experienced, he understands the Premier League, and we're all fully aware of the levels he's capable of performing to. 'I know Jack's ambition is to get back into the England squad so hopefully we can help him achieve that over the course of the season. 'We're all looking forward to working with him and providing a platform for him to show the best version of himself.' Jack has won three Premier League titles, the Champions League and FA Cup during his time at City. This included being a major part of their Treble winning squad in the 2022-23 season, and he was also a part of their 2023 UEFA Super Cup and Club World Cup winning squads.
