Nationals use a 10-run first inning to beat the reeling Diamondbacks, 11-7
PHOENIX (AP) — Luis García Jr. had a double and three RBIs during a 10-run first inning for the Washington Nationals, who held on late to beat the reeling Arizona Diamondbacks 11-7 on Saturday night. Washington has won 11 of 15 games and scored at least nine runs in four straight games. Arizona has dropped nine of 10. The Nationals' first 11 batters reached base and they scored nine runs before the D-backs recorded an out, which was the second-most in the big leagues since 1961. The Boston Red Sox scored 10 runs before the Florida Marlins got an out in a game on June 27, 2003, according to Elias Sports. Arizona's Brandon Pfaadt (7-4) lasted just eight batters, giving up eight earned runs on six hits. He also hit two batters. The Nationals sent 16 batters to the plate in the first and it took 30 minutes for the D-backs to get three outs. Arizona rallied with two runs in the fourth and five more in the sixth. Randal Grichuk's two-run homer cut it to 11-7. He finished with three hits. Washington starter Michael Soroka (2-3) retired the first 11 batters he faced before Geraldo Perdomo hitting a looping single into right field in the fourth. Josh Naylor followed with a two-run homer. Soroka gave up four runs on six hits and a walk through 5 1/3 innings. He struck out three. Washington's C.J. Abrams was hit by a pitch three times. James Wood, Robert Hassell III, Keibert Ruiz and Daylen Lile all had two hits. Key moment Pfaadt recorded two strikes on Abrams — the game's leadoff hitter — before hitting him on the foot with a pitch, starting the 10-run avalanche. Key stat Pfaadt's ERA ballooned from 3.90 to 5.05. D-backs pitchers hit five batters. Up next The D-backs send RHP Corbin Burnes (3-2, 2.72 ERA) to the mound Sunday while the Nationals counter with LHP Mitchell Parker (4-4, 4.65). ___ AP MLB:

Red Sox Place Liam Hendriks on Injured List, Recall Nick Burdi
Red Sox Place Liam Hendriks on Injured List, Recall Nick Burdi originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The difficult return to action for Boston Red Sox reliever Liam Hendriks continues. The 36-year-old is headed to the injured list with righty Nick Burdi taking his roster spot. Advertisement Hendriks has faced an uphill battle for years now. In 2023, he overcame non-Hodgkin's lymphoma but shortly thereafter underwent Tommy John surgery, which kept him out for the 2024 season. Heading into 2025, Hendriks vied for the Red Sox closer role before ultimately losing to Aroldis Chapman. The woes are evident in a 6.59 ERA, a 4.98 FIP, and a 12:7 K:BB ratio over 13 2/3 innings. It has been a disheartening stretch for Hendriks, who once starred as a member of the Oakland Athletics and Chicago White Sox. From 2019-23, Hendriks was a three-time All-Star, had multiple top-nine Cy Young finishes (ninth in 2020, eighth in 2021), and even earned MVP votes during the COVID season (13th-place). Boston Red Sox relief pitcher Liam Hendriks (31) and catcher Blake Sabol (18) meet on the pitcher's mound during the eighth inning against the Chicago White Sox at Fenway Canha-Imagn Images During that span, he had a 2.26 ERA, a 2.13 FIP, 359 strikeouts to 47 walks, and 114 saves over 239 innings. Advertisement Boston would have been bold to assume that type of production, especially for someone who had been away from the mound for so long. However, this disastrous season puts Hendriks at a crossroads. Perhaps this IL stint will not only regenerate Hendriks' body but also his mind, helping him rediscover some of that prime form. The Red Sox's bullpen has been decent, with a combined ERA of 3.76, ranking 14th among Major League teams. But, a 27-31 record and fourth place standing in the American League East is not nearly what fans had hoped for during spring training. Hopefully, upon Hendriks' return, he starts to look like his old self. Red Sox Called Trade Fit for Surging Former First-Round Pitcher
Red Sox Called Trade Fit for Surging Former First-Round Pitcher originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Boston Red Sox remain in the hunt for an American League wild card spot despite falling four games under .500 as of May 30. Advertisement This puts them in an interesting position ahead of the MLB trade deadline, where selective buying could be the most opportune route for the Red Sox. For example, how about a trade for an up-and-coming starting pitcher who is still under team control in 2025 and beyond? Miami Marlins starter Ryan Weathers pitches at Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium in Wise-Imagn Images CBS Sports staff writer R.J. Anderson recently suggested Miami Marlins left-hander Ryan Weathers as a possible "trade fit" for Boston. "Weathers has the potential to be one of the deadline's biggest wild cards," Anderson noted. Explaining: "He's only pitched a few times so far this season, but he's captured attention with his improved stuff and velocity." Advertisement "Weathers won't even qualify for arbitration until after this winter, giving the Marlins the option to hold and let him gain value," the MLB writer added. Concluding: "I'm including him anyway because teams in need of another above-average starter might be willing to make a speculative play for his services." The Red Sox would fit that profile, as Anderson pointed out. Outside of ace Garrett Crochet, Boston hasn't gotten a whole lot of consistency out of their collection of starting options this season. Brayan Bello and Walker Buehler have worked their respective ERAs down under 4.00, but rookie Hunter Dobbins has pitched to mixed results, and veterans Lucas Giolito and Tanner Houck have gotten crushed more often than not. Advertisement Weathers would provide another organizational option with upside. A former No. 7 overall selection of the San Diego Padres in 2018, the 25-year-old Weathers has been surging in Miami this year. Pitching to a 1.15 ERA over his first 3 starts. Weathers hasn't been a huge strikeout pitcher throughout his major league career, with a Ks per nine innings of 7.4 since his debut in 2021. But he's bumped that average up to 8.6 Ks per nine in 2025. Since joining the Marlins via trade in 2023, Weathers has a cumulative ERA of 3.75 over 115.1 innings pitched. He'd be a worthwhile flyer for the Red Sox, assuming Miami is willing to move him.
