Inside the B-2 raid: Pick-up pills, 18 hours flying, then bombs away

It's a long haul racing the sun from Knob Noster, Missouri, to the mountains of Qom and the nuclear bunker buried deep at Fordow. At 37-hour haul, to be precise, there and back.
Even before the pilots charged with flying their $2 billion B-2s to drop the world's largest non-nuclear bombs on Iran were in position, they would have already spent 18 hours in the air.
Given the secrecy surrounding the B-2, a projection of military power that paradoxically exists never to be seen, little is known about who the men and women who flew the sorties that effectively forced the regime into a ceasefire with Israel. They were, the Pentagon said, as far from the macho shirt-off volleyball-playing fighter aces portrayed in Top Gun as you could care to imagine.
It is, however, possible to piece together how the mission unfolded, beginning long before the planes took off from Whiteman Air Force Base, about an hour east of Kansas City, racing to strike as the Iranians slept.
For the aviators and air crews from the US air force and the Missouri air national guard, ranked from captain to colonel, the raid felt like the Super Bowl, military chiefs said this week, with 'thousands of scientists, airmen and maintainers all coming together'.

In the previous weeks they would have flown to Fordow and back dozens of times in a state-of-the-art simulator at Whiteman base, near Knob Noster, which includes a replica of the B-2 cockpit, complete down to the cot where they can sleep and the toilet that is used by the pilots; only if they really must.
In many ways, when President Trump gave the go-ahead, the real mission would have felt similar to the simulations. One former pilot said the big difference would be over Iran, where they would 'feel the clunk' of their weapons bay doors opening, then a lightening of the aircraft as it was relieved of its two massive ordnance penetrator (MOP) bombs, each weighing 30,000 pounds.
There would have been a sharp turn as soon as 'bombs away' was called as the stealth bombers headed out of Iranian airspace. Then, one pilot on the mission said, there was the 'brightest explosion I have ever seen, it literally looked like daylight'.
By that time, according to pilots, the two in the cockpit may already have felt the need to take two pills that have long been issued to those who fly long missions. The so-called 'pick-up pills' or 'go pills', which are likely to be amphetamine-based to keep aviators awake, have been issued to bomber pilots about to undertake missions through the night.

If Melvin G Deaile, who flew the longest recorded B-2 mission at 44 hours to Afghanistan and back in 2001, knows whether the pilots needed the pills, he was not saying this week. Speaking to The Times, the retired air force colonel said the pilots would have been remarkable for being unremarkable. 'The B-2 is still a technological marvel,' said Deaile, 59, of the bomber that entered service in 1997.
There were originally plans to build 132 B-2s, but the cost of each and the end of the Cold War brought an end to that. The 21st and last B-2 entered service in 2000. 'The amazing thing is, whether it's the pilots this past weekend or myself or anybody, they're just average Americans who signed up to do a mission and go out and do it.'
The bomber has seen action in Kosovo, Iraq and Afghanistan, where Deaile flew in October 2001 after President Bush ordered strikes on the Taliban in response to the 9/11 attacks. Though perhaps not quite as fraught with risk as attacking Iran, which once had a proud air force and strong air defences, the mission to strike the Taliban was complicated by a late change of targets while they were in the air.
For military planners at the Pentagon, however, Fordow has always been the main prize in Iran. Alongside Captain Brian Neal, Deaile piloted a B-2 named Spirit of America — poignant, given the raid took place in the months after 9/11. He admitted they had been given pills to keep them alert during the mission, which included multiple refuellings and spending two hours over Afghanistan.
The mission was so long because after dropping 12 JDAMs — guided bombs — on Taliban forces, commanders asked them to go back over enemy territory and release four more explosives. Deaile and Neal finally touched down on the Diego Garcia military base after being in the air for 44 hours and 20 minutes.
According to some reports, the pilots who completed the Iran mission had a microwave oven on board to provide warmed-up snacks for the trip. That is a luxury Deaile, who grew up on a farm in Fresno, was not afforded. While the army has 'meals, ready-to-eat' (MREs), Deaile said the air force equivalent was kinder to the digestive system and better adapted to long flights. He also brought sandwiches on board and was allowed a flask of coffee. But sometimes the snacks would go uneaten.

'Most of the time we didn't really eat that much after a day and a half in the cockpit because we weren't really exercising,' he said. 'You don't really get hungry if you're not doing much.'
Even if the work is not too physically demanding, the pilots must still sleep. Deaile used to have a cot behind the two seats so that an airman could sleep when not in 'critical phases of flight' — take-off, landing, mid-air refuelling and bombing. It was not a luxury bed, but good enough.
'It's the military; you learn to sleep wherever you can,' Deaile said. 'And we'll get the job done and if it means staying awake for 40 hours, we stay awake for 40 hours.'

A British veteran has spoken about how he witnessed Japan's wartime surrender up close as a 20-year-old sailor. Reg Draper was off Japan's coast on the HMS Duke of York when the captain announced the war was ending. Recalling that moment - 80 years ago today - he said cheers went up from the battleship's crew. Mr Draper saw the Japanese sign the agreement on USS Missouri when he went on board to help his friend, who was the ship's photographer. "All the ships mustered in Tokyo Bay with the USS Missouri, which was the American ship, and it was on the Missouri where they signed the peace treaty," the 100-year-old recalled. "Then we all came back down to Australia and we went and celebrated - we went down to Tasmania and everybody had four days leave in Hobart. Mr Draper, who grew up in Leeds, was a stores assistant on the Duke of York after volunteering on his 18th birthday. His duties included rationing out the rum so all the sailors could get their 11am hit. He said senior crew got theirs neat while everyone else had theirs watered down. He also recalled being clattered by Prince Philip after the Queen's future husband, who was on a destroyer escorting his ship, came aboard. "We used to have deck hockey on the quarter deck and it was murder playing deck hockey," said Mr Draper. "He [Philip] knocked me over once and then the next time he came round he hit me, there's still a mark there, he gave me a clout with his hockey stick. "He came to see me just to see how I was. They just put a stitch in and it was alright." The pair met again in 1972 when Mr Draper was training sea cadets for the Duke of Edinburgh awards. He said Philip noticed his medals and recalled escorting the ship - but didn't mention the hockey game. 3:42 Mr Draper's time on the Duke of York included Arctic convoys to deliver supplies to Russia and sailing to Sydney, Australia, in 1945 before joining the East Indies Fleet. "We started going up to the islands, kicking the Japanese out of the islands as we went," he recalled. Japan surrendered after the US dropped two nuclear bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, on 6 and 9 August. Mr Draper turned 21 on the trip back to Europe and said 2,000 people were on board as they had picked up prisoners of war. He went on to become an insurance salesman and said he's planning to watch today's 80th anniversary commemorations from his home in Elton, Cheshire. The King released an audio message in which he said the sacrifices of VJ Day veterans should "never be forgotten". He described how the heroic actions of those sent to fight in the Far East, as well as the brutal treatment of civilians, "reminds us that war's true cost extends beyond battlefields, touching every aspect of life".

TWO people have died after a helicopter crashed into a barge on the Mississippi River. The pair on board sadly passed away after their chopper hit power lines and plunged into the vessel, according to the Federal Aviation Administration. Think grey smoke was seen pluming from the barge in the aftermath of the tragedy. The incident took place around Alton in St Charles County, Missouri, at around 11.05am on Thursday. The barge had been stationed close to Maple Island. "The helicopter was just working on these powerlines. The powerline blew up," said a person recording the footage as reported by The Mirror. "There was a pilot, there was a worker. It's exploding right now." The ensuing blaze was put out quickly, according to Missouri State Highway Patrol. Investigators are currently establishing if anyone was on board the barge at the time of the crash. However, it is believed that there was not, according to First Alert 4. The Illinois State Police Department has said the Lewis and Clark Bridge will be closed for an undetermined amount of time. The crash is under investigation by the Federal Aviation Administration and National Transportation Safety Board. .

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth is weighing the return of the U.S. Army's aggressive 'shark attack' training practice as the Pentagon vows to 'Make Basic Great Again.' Hegseth, a U.S. Army National Guard veteran, pledged on Wednesday evening to crack down on what he sees as 'weak, woke' and 'politically correct' basic training. 'Getting back to basics…means getting back to tried, true & tough BASIC TRAINING,' he continued in a post on X. 'When we start soft, we get soft.' Part of Hegseth's toughening-up process could involve bringing back 'shark attacks,' a defense official told military news website Task and Purpose. The practice involves recruits being swarmed by several bellowing drill sergeants to establish dominance at the start of basic training. The in-your-face tactic, which became familiar to veterans of the Vietnam War era when many draftees filled ranks, was phased out about five years ago after being deemed no longer appropriate. It was instead replaced by the 'Thunder Run': a day one training exercise which requires recruits to quickly and efficiently move equipment along a quarter-mile stretch, arranging items in the same way as they were picked up. 'Errors are penalized with push-ups or other exercises,' according to the U.S. Army website. At the time, Command Sgt. Maj. Thomas Yaudas said that 'nothing's really changed' apart from 'we're not screaming in their faces.' While some Army officials believe shark attacks are outdated and were rightfully replaced, others think it can be an effective technique to acclimate trainees to basic training. 'It presents the 'shock and awe' effect of soldiers coming into a new environment, which may include a lot of chaos,' Master Sgt. Joseph Harrison, a retired drill sergeant in Fort Jackson, South Carolina, told Task and Purpose. The method, he said, also helps weed out trainees who cannot follow instructions and 'lack the ability to soldier correctly.' Right-leaning news organization Just the News first reported that Hegseth was looking to bring back drill sergeant shark attacks, to which the defense secretary shared on X and responded with a '100' emoji. Hegseth also shared a black and white photo of two Army drill sergeants screaming in the face of a recruit. Hegseth also directed the military to reverse a ban on 'bay tossing,' defense sources told the website. It would allow drill sergeants to overturn mattresses or bunks of military trainees once again, toss locker contents onto the floor, knock over trash cans, and other ways of causing a mess – before demanding that recruits clean it up. According to one Pentagon official, Hegseth said that 'bay tossing' is necessary because tough training equates to 'more cohesive' units. The official told the news site that they want to eradicate training methods that 'breed undisciplined people' and 'wimps.' 'Tossing bunks is back. Drill sergeants are back. Getting cursed at is back,' a Pentagon source said. Pentagon Press Secretary Kinglsey Wilson also shared the story on X along with the caption: 'Make BASIC Great Again!'
