Thousands brave rain to attend solidarity rally for Zara Qairina
PAPAR: Despite the rain, about 5,000 people turned up for the Himpunan Aman Solidariti Zara Qairina here tonight. The rally, held at the Benoni Commercial Centre compound, saw participants holding placards bearing the hashtag #Justice4Zara, and dressed in black as a symbol of mourning. Organising chairman from Komuniti Anak Muda Papar, Azrul Ibrahim, described the gathering as a clear sign that Malaysians are demanding justice in the case involving the Form One student who allegedly fell from the third floor of a religious school dormitory here. "This (peaceful assembly) is not just a show of solidarity, but a manifestation of the public's desire — especially those of us in Papar — to know what truly happened to Zara Qairina. "We are calling for the investigation to be expedited, and if there was any misconduct by anyone, we demand that they be brought to justice. "At the same time, we also urge the people of Papar and beyond to exercise caution when sharing or commenting on any information. "We have seen, through the death of Zara Qairina, that social media has become flooded with false narratives and slander, and if not controlled, this can cause division among the people," he said. Azrul said the case had drawn not only national attention, but also interest from neighbouring countries including Singapore, Indonesia, and Brunei. Earlier today, Zara's remains were exhumed from the Tanjung Ubi Muslim Cemetery in Mesapol. A post-mortem is scheduled to be conducted at 9am tomorrow.

Malaysian embassy assures support for nationals injured in Bangkok fire attack
BANGKOK (Bernama): The Embassy of Malaysia in Thailand has assured the families of two Malaysian tourists who were set on fire here on Thursday that it will closely monitor their conditions. The Malaysian Embassy's Chargé d'Affaires ad interim to Thailand, Bong Yik Jui, said both victims remain in stable condition despite being warded in the intensive care unit. Bong said Gan Xiao Zhen, 27, sustained second-degree burns over 36 per cent of her body, including her face, chest and arm, while Ong Yik Leong, 26, suffered second-degree burns to his upper body, both front and back. "Whether the family members are here or have returned to Malaysia, the embassy will continue to monitor the victims' progress closely with the hospital,' he told Bernama when met at the Police General Hospital here on Saturday. The two Malaysians, Gan and her boyfriend Ong, were attacked by an unemployed man who allegedly doused them with thinner before setting them alight near a shopping mall on Ratchadamri Road at around 10 pm on Thursday. Meanwhile, during a briefing session with the victims' family members on Saturday, Assistant Permanent Secretary of the Tourism and Sports Ministry, Seksun Ngawsuwan, said the Thai government would allocate a specific sum to assist with the victims' medical expenses. "We will assist the family members as much as possible to ensure that the recovery process proceeds smoothly,' he said. He added that both victims were expected to require about a month of treatment in Thailand to ensure their wounds healed properly and without infection. When asked when the victims could be transferred back to Malaysia, Seksun said it would depend on the doctors' observations and recommendations. "I know it is a challenge for the family members to stay here and care for their loved ones. However, until they are medically fit, it is too risky to transfer them back to Malaysia,' he said. On Friday, Thai Tourism and Sports Minister Sorawong Thienthong expressed his regret over the incident involving the two Malaysian tourists. Sorawong said his ministry was concerned over the matter and had instructed all subordinate agencies, particularly the Tourist Police and security agencies, to urgently provide assistance and close supervision, while also strengthening security measures to build confidence among all tourists visiting Thailand. - Bernama

Penang PKR Youth condemns upside-down Jalur Gemilang display at hardware store
KUALA LUMPUR: Penang PKR's Youth wing has strongly condemned the act of flying the Jalur Gemilang upside-down in front of a hardware store in Kepala Batas, Penang. Its chief, Muhammad Zakwan Mustafa Kamal, said the act was disrespectful, irresponsible, and an insult to the dignity of the nation. "The Jalur Gemilang is a symbol of sovereignty, unity, and the pride of the Malaysian people. Flying it upside down is an unacceptable insult, especially as we celebrate the month of independence," he said in a statement today. Zakwan called for an immediate investigation by the authorities and for legal action to be taken without compromise if the act was proven to be deliberate. He said the shop owner should also issue a public apology to all Malaysians. He also reminded all business owners in Penang to ensure the national flag is flown correctly and with the utmost respect. "We wish to remind everyone that the Jalur Gemilang is not merely a decoration. It is a symbol of the sacrifices of our independence fighters and the identity of our beloved nation. To neglect or make a mockery of it is a form of betrayal against the values of patriotism. "We will not remain silent when the nation's symbol is insulted. We stand firmly with Malaysians who love this country, demanding justice and ensuring that such incidents do not happen again," he said.
