Malaysian embassy assures support for nationals injured in Bangkok fire attack
The Malaysian Embassy's Chargé d'Affaires ad interim to Thailand, Bong Yik Jui, said both victims remain in stable condition despite being warded in the intensive care unit.
Bong said Gan Xiao Zhen, 27, sustained second-degree burns over 36 per cent of her body, including her face, chest and arm, while Ong Yik Leong, 26, suffered second-degree burns to his upper body, both front and back.
"Whether the family members are here or have returned to Malaysia, the embassy will continue to monitor the victims' progress closely with the hospital,' he told Bernama when met at the Police General Hospital here on Saturday.
The two Malaysians, Gan and her boyfriend Ong, were attacked by an unemployed man who allegedly doused them with thinner before setting them alight near a shopping mall on Ratchadamri Road at around 10 pm on Thursday.
Meanwhile, during a briefing session with the victims' family members on Saturday, Assistant Permanent Secretary of the Tourism and Sports Ministry, Seksun Ngawsuwan, said the Thai government would allocate a specific sum to assist with the victims' medical expenses.
"We will assist the family members as much as possible to ensure that the recovery process proceeds smoothly,' he said.
He added that both victims were expected to require about a month of treatment in Thailand to ensure their wounds healed properly and without infection.
When asked when the victims could be transferred back to Malaysia, Seksun said it would depend on the doctors' observations and recommendations.
"I know it is a challenge for the family members to stay here and care for their loved ones. However, until they are medically fit, it is too risky to transfer them back to Malaysia,' he said.
On Friday, Thai Tourism and Sports Minister Sorawong Thienthong expressed his regret over the incident involving the two Malaysian tourists.
Sorawong said his ministry was concerned over the matter and had instructed all subordinate agencies, particularly the Tourist Police and security agencies, to urgently provide assistance and close supervision, while also strengthening security measures to build confidence among all tourists visiting Thailand. - Bernama

Viral video of upside-down flag from last year, police say
KUALA LUMPUR: A viral video purportedly showing the Malaysian flag flown upside down at a company's premises in Bandar Pinggiran Subang, Shah Alam, has been confirmed to be from an incident that occurred last year. Sungai Buloh Police chief Supt Mohd Hafiz Muhammad Nor said a review of closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage from the premises over the past few days showed the Malaysian flag was flown correctly, contrary to what was depicted in the viral video. "The 2024 incident occurred when a newly purchased Malaysian flag was being put up, but the mistake was corrected once it was noticed. However, the video was reshared this year by a TikTok user. "Police received a report on Saturday (Aug 9) from the company's project manager, who denied the allegations in the social media posting," he said in a statement on Sunday. - Bernama

Sungai Buloh police confirm viral upside-down flag video from last year
SUNGAI BULOH: Police have confirmed that a viral video showing the Malaysian flag flown upside down is linked to an incident that occurred last year. In a statement, Sungai Buloh district police chief Superintendent Mohd Hafiz Muhammad Nor said a police report was lodged by a 40-year-old man who works as a project manager at the company featured in the video, located in Bandar Pinggiran Subang. The complainant claimed the video and accompanying comments on social media were defamatory and misrepresented the company's current status. "Following an investigation, police reviewed CCTV footage and interviewed company employees. "We found that the upside-down flag incident occurred last year, when a newly purchased flag was installed incorrectly. "However, the error was promptly corrected at the time," said Hafiz. He added that the company has not been operating for the past two days, and the video in question was re-shared by a TikTok user. As of 7pm on Saturday, the video had received 5,332 comments and 2,515 shares. Hafiz emphasised that flying the Malaysian flag upside down is a serious matter, as it represents a symbol of national sovereignty. He warned that such mistakes, whether intentional or accidental, could be seen as disrespectful to the nation and may provoke public anger. He also advised the public to use social media responsibly and to avoid uploading or spreading false or defamatory content. "Social media platforms must be used with care. Irresponsible posts can mislead the public and cause unnecessary unrest," he said.
