Malaysian embassy assures support for nationals injured in Bangkok fire attack
BANGKOK (Bernama): The Embassy of Malaysia in Thailand has assured the families of two Malaysian tourists who were set on fire here on Thursday that it will closely monitor their conditions. The Malaysian Embassy's Chargé d'Affaires ad interim to Thailand, Bong Yik Jui, said both victims remain in stable condition despite being warded in the intensive care unit. Bong said Gan Xiao Zhen, 27, sustained second-degree burns over 36 per cent of her body, including her face, chest and arm, while Ong Yik Leong, 26, suffered second-degree burns to his upper body, both front and back. "Whether the family members are here or have returned to Malaysia, the embassy will continue to monitor the victims' progress closely with the hospital,' he told Bernama when met at the Police General Hospital here on Saturday. The two Malaysians, Gan and her boyfriend Ong, were attacked by an unemployed man who allegedly doused them with thinner before setting them alight near a shopping mall on Ratchadamri Road at around 10 pm on Thursday. Meanwhile, during a briefing session with the victims' family members on Saturday, Assistant Permanent Secretary of the Tourism and Sports Ministry, Seksun Ngawsuwan, said the Thai government would allocate a specific sum to assist with the victims' medical expenses. "We will assist the family members as much as possible to ensure that the recovery process proceeds smoothly,' he said. He added that both victims were expected to require about a month of treatment in Thailand to ensure their wounds healed properly and without infection. When asked when the victims could be transferred back to Malaysia, Seksun said it would depend on the doctors' observations and recommendations. "I know it is a challenge for the family members to stay here and care for their loved ones. However, until they are medically fit, it is too risky to transfer them back to Malaysia,' he said. On Friday, Thai Tourism and Sports Minister Sorawong Thienthong expressed his regret over the incident involving the two Malaysian tourists. Sorawong said his ministry was concerned over the matter and had instructed all subordinate agencies, particularly the Tourist Police and security agencies, to urgently provide assistance and close supervision, while also strengthening security measures to build confidence among all tourists visiting Thailand. - Bernama

Thai Foreign Ministry Organises ASEAN Run To Commemorate ASEAN Day
By Kenny Teng BANGKOK, Aug 8 (Bernama) -- The Thai Foreign Ministry organised the ASEAN Family Run 2025 on Friday to commemorate the 58th anniversary of the founding of the ASEAN Community. The Malaysian Embassy's Chargé d'Affaires ad interim to Thailand, Bong Yik Jui, said it was encouraging to see Thai Foreign Minister Maris Sangiampongsa, Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt, and the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) team participating in the event. bootstrap slideshow Bong noted that Thailand, together with Malaysia and Indonesia, was among the founding members of ASEAN, and all three nations continue to demonstrate their commitment to promoting peace and prosperity across all sectors in the region. "Thanks to Thailand's MFA for organising the ASEAN Family Run 2025 and the flag-hoisting ceremony to mark the 58th anniversary of ASEAN's founding. "Everyone appeared satisfied and cheerful. I'm looking forward to similar events in the years to come," he told Bernama after the event on Friday. Approximately 500 participants, including members of the diplomatic corps from ASEAN Member States, Timor-Leste, ASEAN Dialogue Partners, Sectoral Dialogue Partners, and Development Partners, as well as representatives from government agencies, the private sector, international organisations, and the general public, took part in the event at Lumpini Park here. In his brief opening remarks, Maris stated that this year marks the first time the Department of ASEAN Affairs and MFAs have hosted the event, which coincides with ASEAN Day, established 58 years ago. "Thailand, as one of the initiators, aims to see ASEAN become stronger, more cooperative, and committed to advancing the region towards a resilient society and economy," he said.

M'sians advised to avoid Thai-Cambodia border
BANGKOK: The Malaysian Embassy in Thailand has advised Malaysians to avoid disputed areas along the Thai-Cambodian border amid rising military tensions between the two neighbours. Malaysia's Chargé d'Affaires ad interim to Thailand Bong Yik Jui said no Malaysians have so far been reported injured or affected by the ongoing exchange of artillery fire in six locations: Ta Muen Thom Temple, Ta Kwai Temple, Chong Bok, Preah Vihear, Chong An Ma, and Chong Chom. He said these areas are all located in border zones with checkpoints, and some bikers or caravan travellers might inadvertently enter them. Bong said three registered Malaysians are residing in the reported provinces. "After being contacted, all three have confirmed that they are safe. No requests for assistance have been received so far," he told Bernama when contacted on Thursday (July 24). Bong urged Malaysians in the affected areas to register with the embassy to ensure they receive timely updates and support in the event of an emergency, and should any Malaysian require assistance, they can contact the embassy's helpline at +66 87028 4659. He said the embassy will continue to monitor the situation closely and provide updates when necessary. Thai and Cambodian troops reportedly clashed early Thursday in a disputed area along their shared border, with both sides accusing each other of initiating the latest confrontation. Tensions between the two Southeast Asian neighbours have been rising since May 28, following a deadly border clash near the Preah Vihear area that left one Cambodian soldier dead. The two Southeast Asian neighbours have been disputing an 817-km undemarcated border for decades, which continues to sour diplomatic ties. On Wednesday, the Thai government downgraded diplomatic relations with Cambodia in immediate retaliation after a Thai soldier was injured by what the government claimed was a newly planted landmine. The Cambodian government reciprocated by lowering its diplomatic ties with Thailand to the lowest level on Thursday. - Bernama

Embassy hosts Aidiladha celebration for Malaysians in Bangkok
- Photo: Malaysian Embassy in Thailand BANGKOK: (Bernama) The Embassy of Malaysia in Thailand hosted a gathering for Malaysians abroad and local guests on Saturday (June 6) to mark this year's Hari Raya Aidiladha. Chargé d'Affaires ad interim of Malaysia to Thailand, Bong Yik Jui, said while Aidiladha signified the values of sacrifice, devotion, and unity among Muslims worldwide, it also solemnly reflected to the duty and dedication carried out by the mission, in upholding Malaysia's interests overseas. The embassy also welcomed a visiting delegation from the Royal Military College (RMC), comprising 32 Putera cadets and five officers at the celebration. The delegation, led by its Commandant, Brig Gen Shaiful Azuar Ariffin, is currently in Bangkok for a one-week student exchange programme with Thailand's Armed Forces Academies Preparatory School (AFAPS). Bong noted that the visit offered RMC students a unique opportunity to experience Hari Raya celebration away from their families and friends. "The celebration served not only as a religious gathering but also as a meaningful occasion to strengthen the bonds among Malaysians in Thailand,' he added. - Bernama
