BBC News11-02-2025

New Republic of Ireland manager Carla Ward has included Melisa Filis in her squad for this month's Nations League B double-header.Charlton Athletic midfielder Filis qualifies through her Mayo-born mother and has been called up for the first time after receiving international clearance from Fifa.Ward is without a host of experienced players for her first panel with the quintet of Lily Agg, Jamie Finn, Jess Ziu, Louise Quinn and Tara O'Hanlon all unavailable, while Niamh Fahey, Diane Caldwell and Julie-Ann Russell have retired from international football since the side's last outing.Former Aston Villa manager Ward, 41, replaced Eileen Gleeson last month and has signed a contract through to the 2027 World Cup.Gleeson's contract was not renewed by the Football Association of Ireland (FAI) following the team's defeat by Wales in December's Euro 2025 play-off that saw them miss out on place at this year's finals in Switzerland.Ward's first game in charge will be at home against Turkey on 21 February before they travel to Slovenia four days later.
Ward also finalised her coaching team this week with Amber Whiteley coming in as an assistant coach to add to a group that already includes assistant head coach Alan Mahon and goalkeeping coach Emma Byrne. "I'm delighted to bring this group of talented professionals and brilliant people together to work with our players for what will be an exciting Uefa Nations League campaign that then leads us into the qualifiers for the 2027 Fifa Women's World Cup," Ward told the FAI's website."We will only succeed if we work together as a team, on and off the pitch, and everyone is already playing their part in preparing us for the opening games."

Leah Williamson admits England failed to produce their best in defeat to Spain

The Lionesses missed out on a place in the Women's Nations League finals after Claudia Pina's brace earned Spain top spot in Group A3. Alessia Russo had put England ahead on her 50th international appearance, despite Spanish players protesting that Salma Paralluelo had been fouled in the build-up. But second-half substitute Pina proved to be the difference with two goals in the space of 10 minutes booking Spain's place in October's semi-finals. What it means 🙌 Netting on her 50th cap 👊 — Lionesses (@Lionesses) June 3, 2025 England had come into the game on the back of a 6-0 win over Portugal and with the European Championship starting next month, Williamson believes there are 'tweaks' to be made. 'I think in the second half they pressed a bit higher, we struggled, we couldn't keep the ball as well as we had done in the first half. We didn't really have any real threat,' Williamson told ITV Sport. 'Under that much pressure against a top side, sometimes that's what happens, they get to you and win the game. 'I think especially first half was a great display, but for the most part we looked solid and we felt solid. 'We feel good, there's just tweaks that need to be made and it's disappointing because that's a competitive fixture and that's an important campaign to us going forward with rankings and seedings. 'I think you saw maybe the best of us the previous game and just slightly off it today.' England boss Sarina Wiegman believes her team showed signs of threat throughout the first half. 'Very intense game. Of course we know that they're very tight on the ball,' she added. 'I think we did well, after the first half they had a little more of the ball, but saw we had the ball a lot too. 'I think we could've been a bit tighter and patient in the first half too, but you could see where we could harm them. I think a couple more times we would not have been offside or play a little quicker behind or switch play quicker, we could've harmed them even more. 'Second half they started really quick, they did something different and pressed really high. We had some trouble to get out of the press and keep the ball. 'Of course they brought Pina in and she was very secure with her shots.' England's attention now turns to Euro 2025 and Wiegman is set to announce her squad for the tournament this week. The team play Jamaica in a friendly on June 29 before their Euros campaign begins against France in Zurich on July 5. Wiegman added: 'What you've seen this week is that we had a very good week. Players coming back from injuries, players fighting for positions or minutes or selection and I think that's very positive. 'Some will keep training because they need to train, others will take a couple of days off. Then we move forward and come together get ready for Jamaica, then for France.'

Nations League roundup: Wales suffer thrashing by Italy in Euro 2025 send-off

Rhian Wilkinson said Wales would not suffer any trauma in Switzerland after being thrashed 4-1 by Italy at their Euro 2025 send-off. Wilkinson suffered the biggest defeat of her 15-month reign as Italy scored four times in the first half of a Nations League finale in Swansea – the Wales manager calling it a 'little bit of capitulation'. First-half goals from Cristiana Girelli, who struck twice with excellent headers, Elena Linari and Sofia Cantore punished poor Wales defending and secured Italy second place in the group. Jess Fishlock produced some late cheer with a stunning consolation eight minutes from time, scoring off the underside of the crossbar from 35 yards for her 47th Wales goal. 'The first half felt like a punch in the face,' Wilkinson said after Wales' final fixture before their opener against the Netherlands in Lucerne on 5 July 5. 'Let's be clear, that was not a performance that I expect from this team. 'Obviously this is a painful lesson and this is the first time that we've really been exposed. There's no psychological damage, there really isn't. This team punished us for every mistake, and that's something that we talk about as a team. There was more bad news for Wales as goalkeeper Olivia Clark, already sporting a black eye suffered in the Denmark game, was forced off before half-time with a head injury. Clark had required treatment for a head injury 15 minutes earlier after being caught by her own defender Hayley Ladd, but continued before conceding a third goal. Wilkinson said: 'Two head hits in a week is not good, so we decided to pull her. We weren't messing with this and took her out, but I'm not concerned there's any lasting damage.' The Scotland manager, Melissa Andreatta, thought her side were unlucky not to win after they picked up their first point in the Nations League with a 1-1 draw away to the Netherlands. Already-relegated Scotland fell behind when midfielder Jill Roord put the hosts in front – and they were in position for a sixth defeat from a possible six – but Andreatta's side got themselves on level terms courtesy of Kathleen McGovern's 27th-minute equaliser. Scotland were not happy with just the point and pushed for a winning goal after the break, but Netherlands had goalkeeper Daphne van Domselaar to thank for their point after she made a string of saves in the second period. Andreatta was happy with her side's performance, telling BBC Scotland: 'With that performance. We earned that result. Especially when you think about the last 24 hours that we had, I think that showed what this team is about. That was established long before me but they put in a great performance tonight. I was really pleased. I think we did start well then the Netherlands started to dominate. We did a tactical change, got a foothold back in the game and we were unlucky to concede that chance but I think we dominated the second half and were unlucky not to win.' The visitors only needed to avoid defeat to secure their playoff spot and Simone Magill's opener put them in a healthy position before Sofija Krajsumovic brought Bosnia back on level terms before the break. Northern Ireland seemed happy to protect their result but suffered a scare when Una Rankic hit the goal frame from a free-kick but hung on to grab their chance to climb into League A.
