2 arrested in Rs 1.94 crore impersonation scam
Police have arrested Vaishna, 26, from Agra, Uttar Pradesh, and Ajay Sahu, 20, from Datia, Madhya Pradesh.
According to police, the case unfolded following a complaint from a Hyderabad resident. The victim reported that cyber fraudsters contacted him via WhatsApp using an unknown number. Crucially, this number displayed the profile picture (DP) of his company's Managing Director, Sumanth. During the exchange, the fraudster, posing as Sumanth, informed the victim that project details would be shared upon his return to the office. Subsequently, the impersonator shared a beneficiary bank account number and instructed the victim to transfer Rs 1,94,00,000 for a new project.
Believing the message to be genuinely from his Managing Director, the victim transferred the substantial sum to the provided account. It was only after this transaction that he realised he had been defrauded and promptly filed an online complaint with an NCRP Acknowledgement Number.
D Kavitha, Deputy Commissioner of Police, stated that the accused conspired to defraud innocent individuals across India by collecting large sums of money under the pretext of this 'WhatsApp DP fraud.' The scheme involved impersonating senior officials and sending deceptive messages via WhatsApp, instructing victims to transfer funds. The accused opened fake current accounts, inducing victims to transfer the amounts into these accounts. In collaboration with other co-accused, they opened multiple current accounts to facilitate the transfer of the Rs 1,94,00,000 from the victim.
Cyber Crime officials strongly urge all citizens to remain vigilant and take proactive measures to safeguard themselves against cyber fraud. They advise that if anyone falls victim to cybercrime fraud, they should immediately dial 1930 or report such activities directly on the www.cybercrime.gov.in portal.

NGT issues notices on alleged plastic waste violations by tobacco brands
The National Green Tribunal ( NGT ) issued notice on a plea from The Citizens Foundation, which alleges widespread non-compliance with the Plastic Waste Management Rules, 2016, by manufacturers of gutkha, pan masala, and tobacco products. The petition claims that banned plastic packaging materials are still being used and calls for strict enforcement of existing regulations. This includes the closure of units violating the rules and the recovery of environmental compensation. A judicial bench led by Justice Prakash Shrivastava and Expert Member Dr. A. Senthil Vel has issued notices to relevant authorities, including the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) and the Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC), seeking their responses. Counsel for the petitioner pointed out that, despite the CPCB's earlier directives, issued on October 22, 2021, under the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986, to 25 manufacturers to halt operations unless they adopted eco-friendly packaging, these directives remain unimplemented. The CPCB had instructed the defaulting companies to submit a timeline for switching to sustainable materials and to pay Environmental Compensation (EC) with interest for any delays. The plea highlights violations of Rules 4(f) and 4(i) of the 2016 Rules, which prohibit the use of plastic sachets and specific polymers in packaging gutkha and related products. CPCB's previous reports suggested that such non-compliance could result in stern penalties, including seizure of goods, shutting down of factories, and levies of Rs 5,000 per ton of plastic used. Repeat offences could attract additional fines of up to Rs 20,000 per ton. The applicant also cited a CPCB report from January 2021, which outlines enforcement under the Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) regime. According to this, delayed EC payments could be penalised with annual interest ranging from 12 per cent to 24 per cent. Delays exceeding three months could lead to factory closures and criminal prosecution under Section 15(1) of the Environment Protection Act. Recognising the gravity of the environmental concerns raised, the NGT has scheduled the next hearing for September 26, 2025. The applicant must serve notices on the remaining respondents and file an affidavit of service one week prior to the scheduled date, as stated by the Tribunal.

Beggars recruited for sperm donation in Hyderabad clinic
HYDERABAD: The Hyderabad Task Force has uncovered major irregularities at a private sperm bank located in Secunderabad during a recent raid, exposing its alleged involvement in an illegal surrogacy and baby-selling racket. According to police sources, the clinic, believed to be associated with a fertility centre in Ahmedabad, allegedly paid up to Rs 4,000 to pedestrians and beggars in exchange for sperm donations. The collected samples were reportedly transported to fertility centres in Ahmedabad. Authorities raided the sperm bank and seized 16 samples. Seven individuals, including clinic staff and operators, have been detained. A case has been registered.

Bihar gangster wanted for murder killed in police encounter in UPs Hapur
Hapur/Lucknow, Jul 28 (PTI) A gangster wanted in a high-profile murder case in Bihar was killed in an encounter with police in Hapur district of Uttar Pradesh, a senior officer said here on Monday. The gunfight broke out on the intervening night of Sunday and Monday, Additional Director General (ADG) of UP STF Amitabh Yash said in a statement. The exchange of fire took place in the Simbhaoli area of Hapur district, involving the Noida unit of the special task force of the Uttar Pradesh Police, along with Bihar Police and Hapur police. During the encounter, the gangster sustained a gunshot injury to his chest and was rushed to a hospital, where he succumbed to injuries, he said. According to ADG Yash, a significant quantity of firearms, cartridges, and other items were seized. The deceased has been identified as Dabloo Yadav, a resident of Sahebpur Kamal area in Begusarai district of Bihar. He was a wanted criminal in a murder case and carried a cash reward of Rs 50,000 on his head. Yadav was the main accused in the abduction and murder of Vikash Kumar alias Rakesh Kadam, the block president of the Hindustani Awam Morcha (HAM party) and a social worker, in Begusarai district, the STF said. On May 24, 2025, Yadav, with the help of his gang, kidnapped Kadam from the Sahebpur Kamal area and took him to the riverine 'diara' region where he was killed and buried under sand to conceal the body, the STF added.
