Legendary Coach Rick Pitino Sends Message to NBA Star Amid Playoffs

Legendary Coach Rick Pitino Sends Message to NBA Star Amid Playoffs

Yahoo10-05-2025

The Cleveland Cavaliers were in a world of trouble after losing the first two games of the Eastern Conference semifinals at home to the Indiana Pacers. But in Game 3 on Friday, they finally looked like themselves again.
With all of their main rotation players available, they outscored Indiana 34-13 in the second quarter and never looked back. Their 126-104 victory put them back in the series, making Game 4 big for both teams.

Donovan Mitchell led the way with 43 points, and Rick Pitino, his old college coach, went on his X account to express his admiration for the six-time All-Star guard.
"I'm so blown away with how good @spidadmitchell is," Pitino wrote. "So proud of him."
Mitchell spent two years at Louisville back when Pitino was its head coach. In his second season there, he averaged 15.6 points a game.
He was the No. 13 overall pick in the 2017 NBA Draft by the Denver Nuggets, who instantly traded him to the Utah Jazz, but he quickly proved he should've been taken earlier.
He started to make his name as a big-name performer during the playoffs, especially in 2020, when he scored over 40 points three times and at least 50 points twice in seven playoff contests.

Since getting traded to Cleveland in 2022, Mitchell has helped make Cleveland into a legitimate Eastern Conference power. He scored 48 points in Game 2 on Tuesday when the Cavs blew a late lead and lost on Tyrese Haliburton's last-second 3-pointer, and he has the ability to help the Cavs come back and take this series despite how it started for them.

Tom Thibodeau's Knicks firing: What does Jalen Brunson think and other pressing questions

The Knicks fired Tom Thibodeau on Tuesday, just three days after losing in Game 6 of the Eastern Conference finals. Now they'll embark on a coaching search. Here are some questions — and answers from The Post's Stefan Bondy: Q: I'm still not sure I understand — the Knicks just knocked out the champion Celtics and went to Game 6 of the Eastern Conference finals. Why are they replacing the man who got them there? A: The Knicks say Thibodeau wasn't the coach to get them to the promised land — the NBA title — but of course it's a little bit more complicated than that. Maybe the ending in the conference finals was a disappointment, but my understanding is that Thibodeau's nonnegotiable personality was also grating on some players and members of the organization. Relationships doomed the coach in his previous stops in Minnesota and Chicago. It was a factor here. Q: What is Jalen Brunson's reaction to this, considering his public affection for Thibodeau and his unqualified endorsement of him on Saturday night?

Mets fans have no excuse — it's time to back Francisco Lindor at the ballot box

Try it free LOS ANGELES — All-Star balloting starts Wednesday, and Mets fans need to step up this voting season. It's on you fans to finally send to the All-Star Game chronically overlooked superstar Francisco Lindor — who's statistically the best shortstop in the National League, and arguably the best player on the best team. Facts count, but Lindor has to know at this point that he can't count on player voting. For whatever reason, the players around the league apparently don't get Lindor, one of the best power-speed-defense combos going. Thanks mainly to fellow players, Lindor has taken the All-Star collar in Queens since he was shipped there by the Guardians, where he was an All-Star four straight years. He's actually played slightly better as a Met, but the count is up to zero-for-four in All-Star appearances. He won't campaign, but friends say he'd love to be an All-Star again. And more to the point: He deserves it. Once again, he deserves it.

New York Knicks next head coach odds: Who will take over for Tom Thibodeau?

Fresh off an Eastern Conference finals berth, the New York Knicks are in search of a new head coach. The Knicks fired head coach Tom Thibodeau on Tuesday after five seasons. And with that, the hiring process begins in the Big Apple. Let's check out the odds for who will land the job at DraftKings Sportsbook as of June 3. Knicks next head coach to start 25-26 regular season Michael Malone: +125 (bet $10 to win $22.50 total)Johnnie Bryant: +400 (bet $10 to win $50 total)Jay Wright: +1500 (bet $10 to win $160 total)Mike Budenholzer: +1500 (bet $10 to win $160 total)Rick Brunson: +1500 (bet $10 to win $160 total)Monty Williams: +2000 (bet $10 to win $210 total)Taylor Jenkins: +2000 (bet $10 to win $210 total)John Calipari: +2000 (bet $10 to win $210 total) Dan Hurley: +2000 (bet $10 to win $210 total) Under Thibodeau, the Knicks made four playoff appearances in five seasons, including that trip to the East finals this season, where they lost in six games to the Indiana Pacers. The Knicks had not made it to the Eastern Conference finals since the 1999-2000 season, where they also lost to the Pacers in six games. Thibodeau had an overall regular-season record of 226-174 as head coach of New York. He was 24-23 in the postseason. At the top of the oddsboard to replace Thibodeau is Michael Malone, who most recently coached the Denver Nuggets but was fired on April 8, with three games left in the 2024-25 regular season. Malone served as head coach of the Sacramento Kings during the 2013-14 season, and lasted just 24 games into the 2014-15 season before being fired. He then arrived in Denver for the 2015-16 season and remained with the franchise for the last 10 seasons. Malone helped the Nuggets make six straight playoff appearances from 2018-2024, winning an NBA title in 2023. Second on the board is Cleveland associate head coach Johnnie Bryant, who is reported to be one of two finalists to land the head coaching job in Phoenix.
