European cheeses stand out at 'Summer Fancy Food' in New York, the most important fair of the year in the US for gourmet foods

The promotion and information campaign 'Discover the European Cheestories with cheeses from Spain', promoted by theInterprofessional Dairy Organization (InLac)with the support of the European Union, marked a new milestone with its participation in the prestigious 'Summer Fancy Food' in New York, the most important event of the year for gourmet foods in the USA.
The fair, which took place between June 29 and July 1 at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center, featured an exhibition and tasting of European cheeses by Erin T. Connolly, certified cheese professional. Specifically, the references of the Arzúa-Ulloa PDO, Murcia PDO al Vino, Idiazabal PDO, Blended Cheese, Manchego PDO, Majorero PDO, Mahón-Menorca PDO, Tetilla PDO, Valdeón PGI or Zamorano PDO, among others, shone.
Since 1955 the Specialty Food Association has organized the Fancy Food Shows that take place twice a year: Winter Fancy Food in San Francisco/Las Vegas in winter and Summer Fancy Food in New York in summer. The latter is the main edition.
In this edition, Spain has also been the guest country at the fair, with strategic visibility and location to showcase its productions, marked by European production methods that prioritise quality, traceability, food safety, sustainability and welfare of farm animals.
Connollyhighlighted the gastronomic benefits, excellence and versatility of European cheeses of Spanish origin: 'Europe can boast of having some of the best references in the world, made with cow's, goat's, sheep's milk or a mixture, in many cases from cattle of native breeds that can only be found there. In Spain alone we find more than 150 types of cheeses, among which some thirty stand out with quality figures or labels recognized by the EU, such as designations of origin or protected geographical indications, which coexist perfectly with the territories where they are produced. They are gastronomic jewels, authentically unique'.
Participation in fairs has been one of the priorities of the 'Cheestories' promotional campaign, allowing the European sector to be present in relevant forums in New York, Las Vegas or Chicago, to publicise cheeses and help their unstoppable expansion in the USA', as the managing director of InLac recalled, Nuria María Arribas.
'Internationalization is unstoppable for our famous cheeses. In 2024, for example, exports of European cheese of Spanish origin to all foreign destinations increased in volume (+6.95% to 125,206 tonnes) and value (+4.57% to 839.42 million euros). Shipments to the US have an important weight, concentrating 14.45% in value and almost 8% in volume of the total, which makes it the third foreign market in the sector in value and the fourth in volume', Arribas stressed, although 'the growth potential is still enormous, so we are going to continue to bet firmly on this country'.

The contract covering 10,000 airline catering workers at LSG Sky Chefs was last amended in 2016, more than nine years ago. It became amendable again in 2018. So far, despite years of negotiations, no deal has been reached. Last July, about 8,000 workers at Gate Gourmet, the other leading airline caterer, reached a tentative deal, which was ratified in August. Their contract had also become amendable on Dec. 31, 2018. A big difference in negotiations was that the Gate Gourmet workers had been released to strike by the National Mediation Board. The tentative agreement came late at night on Friday, July 26. on Friday night, with a strike looming. By contrast, the LSG Sky Chef workers have not been released. Moreover, given that the Trump administration has been less favorable to labor unions than the Biden administration was, a release seems less likely, which means less pressure on negotiators. The workers, represented by Unite Here, plan demonstrations on Thursday at 16 major airports, listed at the end of this story. 'We've been negotiating with Sky Chefs since the end of 2018,' said Unite Here spokeswoman Megan Cohorst. 'It's always been a long process to get a contract under the Railway Labor Act. We're fighting for higher wages and an affordable health care plan that doesn't cost workers a lot of money for basic health care.' Cohorst declined to comment on the impact of the change in presidential administrations. In a prepared statement, Unite Here noted that the contract with Gate Gourmet offers 'a life-changing new contract with significant raises and better, affordable health care.' The company pays for 90% of the plan and there is no deductible. Sky Chefs, in a prepared statement, said that it 'remains engaged in active negotiations regarding our current labor agreement, under the RLA with oversight from the National Mediation Board. We have mutually scheduled bargaining sessions with Unite Here for August and look forward to continuing discussions in good faith.' RLA is the Railway Labor Act. Talks are scheduled for next week in Baltimore. The LSG Sky Chef workers plan to demonstrate Thursday at airports at Baltimore, Boston, Chicago (O'Hare), Denver, Las Vegas, Miami, Minneapolis, New York (JFK), Orlando, Philadelphia, Phoenix, Pittsburgh, Sacramento, Seattle, and Washington (DCA). A picket at LAX is scheduled for August 8. Cohorst said demonstrations will focus on airlines -- including American, Delta, United, and Alaska – serviced by LSG kitchens. Unite Here said airline catering workers prepare, pack, and deliver food and beverages served aboard flights. 'Though their work is essential to airline operations, requiring skill and precision to prevent flight delays and ensure food safety, workers report that they earn poverty wages, and that the employer-provided health care plan is too expensive,' the union said. Some LSG Sky Chef workers make less than $15 hourly, the union said.

"We wanted to do something better and we feel there is nothing like this in Norfolk," Mrs Ali said. "We wanted to be different. You can still get your classics but we've added a gourmet side to it. The food is absolutely amazing. "Our new head chef, Rauful, has worked in many top establishments in London." Owners couple Jay and Kelly Ali (Image: Masala Twist) Masala Twist will continue to operate as a takeaway and delivery out of the former Kebabish of Cromer building next door - a business previously owned by the couple. "It's two separate teams of staff," Mrs Ali said. "We're hitting both ends of the market. Masala Twist will offer takeaway and delivery, but the Cinnamon Room is purely eat-in fine dining." Mr Ali, who is of Bengali heritage, and his wife moved to Norfolk together from London in 2021, taking over Masala Twist but keeping its name. Masala Twist won a TripAdvisor Travellers' Choice award in 2023 for its excellent reviews from customers on the online travel review website. In February last year the couple took over the White Horse pub in West Street, located just around the corner from the curry house.
