Indonesia's Prabowo backs stronger China ties, salutes Beijing's stand on Palestine
JAKARTA, May 25 — Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto praised China's support for developing nations and its long-standing advocacy for the Palestinian cause.
'To this day, China's leadership – particularly in defending the rights of the Palestinian people – remains an inspiration to us all,' he said during the Indonesia-China Business Reception 2025, held in Central Jakarta on Saturday evening.
The event, hosted by the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, was attended by Chinese Premier Li Qiang, who arrived in Indonesia on Saturday for a three-day official visit.
Prabowo also emphasised the strategic importance of Indonesia's partnership with China, calling the relationship crucial for safeguarding regional peace and stability.
'The relationship between Indonesia and China is highly strategic, deeply important, and greatly promising, with the potential to shape the course of peace and stability throughout our region,' he said.
Prabowo praised China's ancient civilisation and enduring cultural values, highlighting its emphasis on 'the common good, mutual benefit' and its pursuit of peace and harmony.
He acknowledged China's historical support for global liberation movements, even during its own early stages of development, and expressed admiration for Beijing's ongoing opposition to oppression, imperialism, colonialism, and apartheid.
In official remarks released by the Presidential Secretariat, Prabowo reaffirmed his commitment to safeguarding and advancing progress in bilateral relations.
He called for broader cooperation beyond trade to include education, healthcare, tourism, and scientific research.
'Our relationship should not be confined to economic matters alone. We must deepen our friendship and collaborate across all sectors,' he stressed.
Trade between the two nations now exceeds US$130 billion annually, with China playing a central role in supporting Indonesia's industrial and technological development, he said. — Bernama

Google Play Gift Cards phased out in Malaysia from June 15 amid scam fears and rise of digital payments
KUALA LUMPUR, June 3 — Google Play Gift Cards which was introduced in Malaysia back in 2018 will be discontinued in the coming weeks. According to a notice issued via email from Google Payments, the Google Play Gift Cards will no longer be available for purchase starting 15th June 2025 and existing users will have about 7 months to spend their existing credit. If you still have spare Google Play Gift Cards, you can redeem them before 15th June 2025 but you must spend the prepaid balance by 31st January 2026 to avoid losing the value. Once you've redeemed the gift card, the balance can be used to pay for content and services such as apps, games, movies and eBooks on the Google Play store. Google added that promotional Google Play Balance will still be issued or held with applicable expiry dates. If your remaining Google Play balance is insufficient, you can combine it with other payment methods which include credit or debit cards, FPX online banking, carrier billing or eWallets (Touch 'n Go eWallet, Boost, ShopeePay). The Google Play Gift Cards are typically sold via 7-Eleven and they come in denominations of RM50, RM100 and RM200. The cards are issued by Google Payment Malaysia Sdn Bhd. These gift cards were seen as an alternative payment option for Google Play users who don't have credit or debit cards. It also provides somewhat better control on spending compared to a linked credit or debit card. While Google didn't disclose the reason behind the discontinuation of its Gift Cards, the move seems to mark a shift towards digital payment options especially with the inclusion of major eWallets on Google Play in Malaysia. KUALA LUMPUR, June 3 — His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, presented the instrument of appointment to the new Malaysian Ambassador to the United States, Tan Sri Muhammad Shahrul Ikram Yaakob, in a ceremony at Istana Negara today. Muhammad Shahrul Ikram is the former Foreign Ministry's secretary-general. According to a post on Sultan Ibrahim's Facebook page, the ceremony was also attended by the Deputy Foreign Minister Datuk Mohamad Alamin and the ministry's secretary-general Datuk Sri Amran Mohamed Zin. Muhammad Shahrul Ikram replaces Datuk Seri Nazri Aziz, whose term concluded on Feb 8. The Pahang-born Muhammad Shahrul Ikram holds a Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Ecology from Universiti Malaya and has attended the Advanced Management Program at Harvard Business School in the US. He started his career as an Administrative and Diplomatic Officer in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1988 and served as Chairman of the Secretariat of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs from Jan 6, 2019, to May 31, 2022. Throughout his 35 years in public service, Muhammad Shahrul Ikram has been posted as Malaysian Ambassador to Qatar, Malaysian Ambassador to Austria and Permanent Representative of Malaysia to the United Nations in New York. While at the Foreign Ministry, he had served as deputy secretary-general (Bilateral Relations), director-general of the Asean-Malaysia National Secretariat (during Malaysia's 2015 ASEAN Chairmanship) and Secretary of the Multilateral Political Division. Fahmi says Meta, X not doing enough to curb online harm

PETALING JAYA : Communications minister Fahmi Fadzil took social media giants Meta and X to task today for not doing enough to tackle cyberbullying, scams, and harmful content online. He said only TikTok had shown real commitment by voluntarily joining the Communications and Multimedia Content Forum of Malaysia (CMCF). 'We cannot have these social media platforms washing their hands of content that could also create online harm, particularly related to suicide,' he said when launching CMCF's guidelines for the reporting and sharing of suicide-related content here today. Fahmi said he had asked CMCF to engage with Meta, X, and other major players, but that none came forward to participate. He said TikTok, on the other hand, took the initiative 'very early on, even before we came up with the licensing regime for social media and online messaging systems'. 'I wholeheartedly applaud TikTok's approach to voluntarily becoming a member of Content Forum,' he said, contrasting this with the 'far from satisfactory' response from Meta and X. 'Facebook, for example, said that they are going to be licensed. But they must understand that Content Forum is not government-led. It's industry-led. It's actually in their interest to participate so they can help develop best practices and codes of conduct.' Malaysians lost RM53.88 billion to online scams in 2024 – around 3% of the gross domestic product. From 2021 to April 2024, online scams claimed over US$708 million (RM3.18 billion) with more than 95,800 victims, according to the State of Scam Report 2024. Suicide rates have also risen sharply. In 2022, Malaysia recorded 1,068 suicide deaths – up 66.6% from 641 cases in 2020. Selangor had the highest number of cases (305), followed by Kuala Lumpur (135), Johor and Penang (123 each). Fahmi also called on vernacular media to support suicide prevention efforts, saying that mental health resources should be made available in all major languages. 'We need to reach out to the vernacular press. A lot of the content is in English, but our efforts must be understood in all languages,' he said. He urged journalists to adhere to CMCF's guidelines when reporting on suicides, particularly by protecting victims' identities and families' privacy to avoid 'copycat' incidents. 'Reporting about suicide is most sensitive and most harrowing for any journalist (covering the tragedy). We should not divulge the location or the personality in such tragedies,' he said. He said the CMCF guidelines also covered the broader digital ecosystem, providing practical advice on how to safely share lived experiences, avoid trauma-triggering content, and guide people towards available support services. 'This comprehensive approach reflects an understanding that every individual plays a role in creating a safer and more empathetic content environment,' he said. He said Malaysia's leadership in this initiative had also gained international recognition, with the guidelines selected for presentation at the International Association for Suicide Prevention.
