Apollo, Ares Eye Bigger Role Backing Sports Leagues, Teams

Mint3 days ago
(Bloomberg) -- Apollo Global Management Inc. and Ares Management Corp. are both pushing deeper into sports investing, the latest multibillion-dollar alternative asset managers to put more money into the booming sector.
Ares has begun talking to investors about a new media and entertainment fund designed for individuals, a departure from the traditionally exclusive nature of sports finance. The semi-liquid fund will target both debt and equity investments across sports leagues and businesses.
Meanwhile, Apollo is considering creating a permanent capital vehicle dedicated to sports finance, a structure that would allow for longer-term and strategic investments in the industry. The fund would primarily lend to professional sports teams and leagues, with the option to take equity positions.
Alts managers like Ares and Apollo have been pouncing on opportunities to invest in sports teams, boosted by the National Football League's landmark decision last year to allow private equity firms to own teams. In May, Bloomberg reported that a group of professional sports team insiders, including billionaire Dallas Mavericks minority owner Mark Cuban, were launching a private equity fund aimed at taking small stakes in pro sports teams.
Arctos Partners, CVC Capital Partners and Ares have also been investing in leagues and teams, while Elliott Management Corp. and Oaktree Capital Management took ownership of football clubs after owners defaulted on their loans.
The Ares fund will align with its push to reach individual investors and came in response to growing demand from financial advisers seeking to expose their retail clients to the asset class. Ares aims to capture $100 billion in assets from individual investors by 2028, an area that makes up 8% of its $546 billion asset base.
If successful, the initiative could generate an estimated $600 million in management fees, it said.
Los Angeles-based Ares has also been ramping up its investments in sports, buying stakes in the NFL's Miami Dolphins and other teams and closing its first fund dedicated to the strategy in 2022 with $3.7 billion.
Meanwhile, New York-based Apollo has already signed a number of sports deals through existing pools of capital, including issuing loans to football teams such as Sporting Lisbon and Nottingham Forest.
'While sports teams, clubs and leagues often draw much of the attention, we believe the broader potential ecosystem of sports, media and entertainment investing is significant and underpenetrated,' Ares has said on its website. The firm has estimated the total investment opportunity in 'adjacent strategies' could be as much as $2.5 trillion.

Supreme Court Rejects BCCI And BYJUS Promoters Appeals Against NCLAT Order On Insolvency Withdrawal

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Monday dismissed pleas filed by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and Byju's co-founder Riju Raveendran challenging a NCLAT Chennai order which denied the withdrawal of insolvency proceedings initiated by the BCCI. A bench comprising Justices JB Pardiwala and R Mahadevan refused to interfere with the NCLAT's April 17 order. On April 17, the National Company Law Appellate Tribunal (NCLAT) had set aside the appeals filed by BCCI and Byju's Riju Ravindran seeking withdrawal of insolvency proceedings against Byju's. NCLAT had held that any application to withdraw the Corporate Insolvency Resolution Process (CIRP) against Think & Learn Pvt. Ltd. (the company running Byju's) requires the support of 90 per cent of its Committee of Creditors (CoC). They had challenged in NCLAT, the order passed by the Bengaluru bench of the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT), which had on February 10, directed to place their settlement offer before the new Committee of Creditors (CoC), in which US-based Glas Trust, the trustee for lenders to which Byju's owes $1.2 billion, is a member. Filing the appeal in the top court, BCCI and Ravindran have sought a withdrawal of the insolvency proceedings saying they have entered into a settlement of Rs 158 crore, and this was done much before the constitution of CoC. Meanwhile, reacting to the Supreme Court's order, Counsel of BYJU'S Founders said in a statement, "It is disappointing that the Hon'ble Supreme Court did not rule in favour of the termination of BYJU's bankruptcy. The termination would have benefitted millions of students who are being deprived of BYJU'S learning system, and thousands of employees." "We are examining the implications of today's order and will decide the future course of action after due consideration. BYJU'S Founders will not stop their efforts to terminate the company's bankruptcy and remain confident that eventually justice will be found through the courts." the statement added.

Alaska Airlines IT outage fallout: 64 flights cancelled on Monday

Alaska Airlines has canceled more than 150 flights — including 64 on Monday alone — following a system-wide ground stop caused by a critical IT hardware failure at its data centers late Sunday. The airline temporarily halted all Alaska and Horizon Air flights for approximately three hours starting around 8 p.m. Pacific Time on Sunday after a key piece of multi-redundant hardware unexpectedly failed. Operations resumed around 11 p.m., but the impact is expected to linger for days. 'Additional flight disruptions are likely as we reposition aircraft and crews throughout our network,' the airline said in a statement. The Seattle-based carrier stressed that the issue is not related to any recent cybersecurity incidents, including the attack involving Microsoft servers over the weekend or the June breach reported by its Hawaiian Airlines subsidiary. 'This was not a cybersecurity event,' Alaska Airlines confirmed, attributing the failure to third-party manufactured hardware. The airline said 'a critical piece of multi-redundant hardware at our data centers, manufactured by a third-party, experienced an unexpected failure.' The airline clarified that the incident was unrelated to other recent events, including the Microsoft server attack over the weekend and the June cybersecurity breach at its Hawaiian Airlines subsidiary. The failed equipment impacted several core systems required for flight operations, though Alaska did not specify which systems were affected. The airline is now working closely with the vendor to replace the faulty hardware.
