Thailand U23 national team returned from Indonesia after claiming third place at the Asean U23 Championship in Jakarta.
The team, coached by Thawatchai Dumrong-ongtrakul, lost a penalty shootout against hosts Indonesia in the semi-finals before beating the Philippines 3-1 in a third-place playoff match on Monday.
"I would like to thank everyone who played in the Asean U23 Championship. As we all know this is my first tournament as the national head coach. Throughout the tournament I got to learn about all the players. It was a great time spent together," said Thawatchai after the team arrived late on Wednesday.
"It was a pity that we could not reach our goal of winning the tournament. But of course, there are a lot more important tournaments coming up such as the AFC U23 Championship qualifying round in September and, most importantly, the 33rd SEA Games in Thailand in December.
"Some players will make the team in these tournaments and some may not, so I would like every player continue to work hard, especially when they are with their clubs. They have to try to have as much game time as possible and maintain their fitness.
"For those who do not make the team for the next tournament, just keep working hard because my staff will continue to monitor your form for future tournaments," he added.
The U23 team will next take part in the AFC U23 Championship qualifiers with the Thais hosting Malaysia, Lebanon and Mongolia for the Group F battles from Sept 1-9 at BG Stadium.

Kingdom eye overall title, set bold target

Thailand have set themselves a target of winning 234 gold medals and are hoping to reclaim the top spot when they host the biennial multisport SEA Games at the end of this year. The last time the Kingdom were crowned the overall champions was in the 2015 edition of the tournament, which was held in Singapore. Arch-rivals Vietnam dominated the medal charts at both 2021 and 2023 SEA Games. A meeting of the National Olympic Committee of Thailand (NOCT), chaired by its secretary-general Thana Chaiprasit, was held Tuesday to finalise the overall target for the host nation based on evaluations submitted by different national sports associations. The figure of 234 golds is far below the expectations of the Department of Sports Development for Excellence of the Sports Authority of Thailand, which has set its sights on a whopping haul of 288 gold medals. The total discussed at Tuesday's meeting is also less than the medals previously predicted by the 50 national sports associations which will be taking part in this year's Games. However, NOCT advisor and chairman of the SEA organising committee Chaiyapak Siriwat said he was sceptical of Thailand's chances of winning so many gold medals. "I would like to request all the national sports associations to improve their training plans if they really hope to meet the targets they have set for themselves," said Chaiyapak. "The Thai fans expect us to do well in the Games, so let's try our best to live up to their expectations." The most coveted prize in December will be the men's football gold medal, something that has eluded the Thais since their victory in the 2017 SEA Games in Malaysia. The Football Association of Thailand (FAT) has promised to sweep all four gold medals at stake at the home Games. They aim to win gold in men's and women's football, as well as both futsal competitions. The biggest haul for the Thais is likely to come from the track and field athletics events in which the hosts are hoping to rake in at least 17 gold medals. Rowing is aiming for 14 titles. The other sports hoping to make major contributions at the Games are boxing, Muay Thai, ju-jitsu and cycling in which the Thai athletes will be gunning for 10 gold medals each. The national associations for sepak takraw and shooting are targeting eight golds each with taekwondo and judo setting targets of seven gold medals each. The other sports hoping to win gold medals at the Games are: aquatics (5); archery (3); badminton (2); baseball (2); basketball (2); billiards & snooker (4); bowling (1); international chess (5); cricket (2); equestrian (3); e-sports (3); extreme sports (5); rock climbing (3); jet ski (4); fencing (2); floorball (4); golf (2); gymnastics (5); handball (2); hockey (5); ice skating (3); kabaddi (4); karate (5); kick boxing (5); pencak silat (3); modern pentathlon (2), petanque (5); rugby (2); sailing (5); windsurfing (4); skeet and trap shooting (3); practical shooting (4); squash (1); table tennis (2); tennis (4); teqball (4); triathlon (4); volleyball (2); weightlifting (6); woodball (5); wrestling (2); wushu (4); while netball and softball are aiming to finish among the top three.

SEA Games ban mooted

Tourism and Sports Minister Sorawong Thienthong said a decision to bar Cambodia from the 33rd SEA Games in Bangkok rests with the 11 SEA Games Federation (SEAGF) member nations. Mr Sorawong said the proposal to prevent the country from attending the games in December would be discussed during an upcoming meeting on Aug 20-21. The minister acknowledged that the matter has been widely debated on social media after he raised it in response to the clashes that broke out along the Thai-Cambodian border, which have led to deaths and injuries on both sides. However, he said the matter would be decided among the federation's member nations, similar to how Russia was banned from joining the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris. Chaiyapak Siriwat, the chief operating officer of the SEAGF Office, said on Sunday that Thailand, as a host of the 33rd SEA Games, cannot ban Cambodia from competing, despite the political conflict and border fighting. He said the decision should be made under the Olympic Charter, which promotes political neutrality and non-discriminatory principles. That charter also defends the right of all member nations to attend. The SEAGF meeting in August will discuss the matter in alignment with the Olympic Charter, said Mr Chaiyapak. "SEAGF and the organising committee have no authority to ban any nations from competing in SEA Games as long as that nation is still a member and not until penalties have officially been issued," Mr Chaiyapak explained.
