A small amount of penguin poop is enough to spook krill

Although a single penguin is capable of devouring thousands of krill in a single sitting, swarms of the zooplankton may detect disturbances in the water ahead of mealtime. The telltale sign? Bird poop.
That's what researchers at the Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences theorize after studying the movements of krill trawled from Antarctica's Bransfield Strait. According to their results, published March 20 in Frontiers in Marine Science, it only takes a small amount of penguin guano (poop) to influence the tiny sea creatures' behavior.
'Here we show for the first time that a small amount of penguin guano causes a sudden change in the feeding and swimming behaviors of Antarctic krill,' Nicole Hellessey, a corresponding author and postdoctoral researcher, explained in an accompanying statement.
To test how krill respond to chemical evidence of nearby penguins, Hellessey and colleagues placed krill into an aquarium at Palmer Station on Antarctica's Anvers Island. They then separated out six-eight individuals and transferred them into a flume of seawater measuring 34.7 degrees Fahrenheit. To better replicate their usual environment, the team even dimmed the ambient lighting to mimic a depth of around 131 feet. Over multiple trials, researchers funnelled in seawater mixed with either algae, penguin poop, or a mixture of both while recording the results using a pair of automated cameras. Scientists then analyzed the footage based on selected krills' 3D positionality as well as the direction and speed of their swimming.
The findings were clear. While krill generally swim straight upstream in what's known as rheotaxis, the presence of penguin guano appeared to immediately influence their behavior. More specifically, the krill sped up their swimming as much as 1.5 times faster than average while also making three times more turns at larger angles.
The penguin poop didn't only influence krill movements. In another phase of the experiment, researchers noticed the zooplankton consumed 64 percent less algae after sensing what they thought may be nearby birds. This implies that krill engage in evasive maneuvers so much that they subsequently eat less when guano is in the water around them.
'Such behavior to escape from nearby penguins would greatly increase the krill's odds of survival,' said Hellessey. 'And these odds would increase exponentially in a swarm, if their neighbors could detect the same cues and communicate the danger to each other.'
The defensive response is likely not only limited to penguins. Given the range of predators that regularly feed on krill, the team theorizes they likely exhibit similar behavior in the presence of seals, whales, and other Antarctic predators.
As climate change continues to shift global ocean ecosystems, however, this detection ability may reduce a krill's chances for survival. Although the team hasn't identified the specific chemicals present in penguin poop that sends krill into a panic mode, they do know that rising acidification levels and warming temperatures could affect how the zooplankton sense danger.
'Any changes to krill's behavior could have major impacts on the future Southern Ocean, as Antarctic krill are a keystone species in this ecosystem,' Hellessey said.
Regardless of further research results, one thing is apparently certain: Dealing with penguin poop is not an enjoyable experience.'Smells like rotten shellfish. Not pleasant to handle,' warned Hellessey.

Novel findings from ​​University of Wisconsin, Oshkosh, geologist Timothy Paulsen and University of Colorado, Boulder, thermochronologist Jeff Benowitz have shed light on the complex and enigmatic history of Antarctica's ice sheets, The Debrief reported. Paulsen and Benowitz's research will appear in the August edition of the journal Earth and Planetary Science Letters. The study builds on a broader understanding of Antarctica's bedrock geology and introduces new insights. The Antarctic ice sheets "today blanket and mask the bedrock geology of Antarctica," the study's authors began. "However, when this bedrock landscape formed over many regions of Antarctica and how it has influenced ice sheet evolution remain as unresolved problems." Paulsen, Benowitz, and their research team set out to glean insights from a mysterious, "hidden" mountain range in Antarctica. Those massive mountains were first discovered during the British National Antarctic Expedition of 1901-1904. "Early exploration of the Antarctic continent revealed a surprising result, a 3,500-kilometer (2,175-mile) long mountain range with peaks over 4,500 meters (2.8 miles) crossing the Antarctic continental interior. This range was known as the 'great Antarctic horst' and is recognized today as the Transantarctic Mountains," Paulsen explained. Research examined periods of "exhumation" — a term in geology for periods when objects beneath or near the Earth's crust have moved closer to the surface — and their "potential influence on Paleozoic and Cenozoic glacial cycles" on the continent. The team analyzed an "exceptionally large data set from igneous rocks recovered from the Transantarctic Mountains," uncovering new evidence with respect to glacial cycles. Their findings hinted at a "much more dynamic Antarctic landscape history than previously recognized," which Paulsen expounded on. "Our new results suggest Transantarctic Mountain basement rocks experienced several punctuated mountain-building and erosion events, creating surfaces along which ancient rocks are missing. These events are curiously associated with major plate tectonic changes along the margins of Antarctica," he said. As is often the case, the team indicated that further research could reveal more about the continent's glacial cycles — which in turn can inform our broader knowledge of climate. An "older geologic history of the continent may have profoundly shaped the patterns of the modern landscape, which likely influenced cycles of glacial advance and retreat, and perhaps evolutionary steps in Earth's global ocean-atmosphere system," Paulsen stated. In 2024, we saw the warmest year on record for our planet. In fact, we've seen the 10 warmest years on record just in the last decade alone. And according to an alarming new report, we can likely expect more of the same heading into 2030. In a May 28 press release, the World Meteorological Organization revealed that global temperatures are expected to continue at or near record levels over the next five years. The WMO offered a bleak outlook on what regions all around the world can expect. As noted by the report, there is an 80% chance that at least one of the next five years will surpass 2024 as the warmest on record. Altogether, there is even a higher chance that at least one of the next five years will be more than 2.7 degrees Fahrenheit above the average temperature set between 1850 and 1900. Although the planet has experienced periods of warming and cooling before, the incredible rate of the global temperature increase over the last few decades sets it apart from ordinary heat waves. The WMO has linked the record warmth with the presence of critical climate issues around the world. The WMO warns that this continual increase in temperatures can lead to even more extreme climate events over the next few years. "Every additional fraction of a degree of warming drives more harmful heatwaves, extreme rainfall events, intense droughts, melting of ice sheets, sea ice, and glaciers, heating of the ocean, and rising sea levels," the press release read. To make matters worse, the WMO also predicts that temperatures in the Arctic are expected to continue to increase at an ever greater rate than the global average temperature. This may contribute to the threat of catastrophic melting of polar ice sheets and glaciers. Not only will this lead to the threat of rising sea levels, but it may also greatly alter regional climate patterns and affect ecosystems and human activities. These disruptions can increase mortality and morbidity from heat exposure, respiratory illnesses, and cardiovascular diseases. Long-term heat waves can also be accompanied by periods of stagnant air, leading to increases in air pollution, especially in dense urban populations. WMO deputy secretary-general Ko Barrett emphasized the impact that rising global temperatures will have on communities. "We have just experienced the ten warmest years on record. Unfortunately, this WMO report provides no sign of respite over the coming years, and this means that there will be a growing negative impact on our economies, our daily lives, our ecosystems, and our planet," Barrett said. While the looming threat of increased global temperatures can be overwhelming, many countries around the world are enacting policies to work towards a cooler future. Developed in 2015, the Paris Agreement is a "legally binding international treaty on climate change" that has been adopted by 195 countries. The Paris Agreement aims to limit the increase in the global average temperature to below 3.6 degrees Fahrenheit above pre-industrial levels. Ideally, the treaty continues to push efforts to limit the temperature increase to 2.7 degrees Fahrenheit. The agreement encourages countries to cut down on pollution while also emphasizing the importance of financial and technological advancements for developing nations to help them mitigate and adapt to the evolving climate. According to Barrett, looking ahead to the future and studying climate patterns will go a long way to combat this worldwide issue.
