Indian rupee, stocks hold firm as tensions rise over Pahalgam

Gulf News25-04-2025
Dubai: The Indian rupee and stock markets have managed to hold the line in the last 38 hours even as political tensions escalate over the brutal killing of tourists in Pahalgam, Kashmir.
The Indian rupee is sticking to 23.1 levels against the dirham, which is more or less the same level since April 17. "It was expected that some softening of the INR would happen - but so far, there is no trace of that," said an FX analyst.
As for Indian stock markets, foreign institutional investor inflows have 'actually strengthened', according to market analysts during the period.
FII fund movement trends are hyper-critical for emerging markets such as India, especially at times of intense crisis, whether over the economy or otherwise.
FII were net buyers with net inflows at Rs82.51 billion - this is the 'highest in seven consecutive days of net positive FII inflows'.
Currently, the benchmark BSE index is just over 80,000, from a 0.28% gain. (The BSE's 52-week high is 85,978, while the low is 70,234.)
'The renewed tensions after Pahalgam have failed to deter the buoyancy that has returned to Indian stocks after the initial jitters at the beginning of this month over US tariffs,' said Milan Vaishnav, founder and Technical Analyst at ChartWizard.ae.
'From the low of 21,743 formed on April 7, the Nifty has rebounded by nearly 2,500 points. It is currently consolidating without showing any signs of a major retracement.'
'There are no signs of a let-up even with the latest tensions. We believe Indian equities are likely to relatively outperform their global peers, but with some corrective movements.'
The BSE is up 2.1% in the year to date.
Mutual funds' performance
Indian expats in the UAE and Gulf have also have sizable presence in Indian stocks through mutual funds and other investment plans.
So far, mutual funds have been net sellers, but with relatively small amounts. On Thursday (April 24), the net outflow was Rs5.35 billion, which is rated marginal.
India-US trade deal
There is 'continued buying interest from foreign institutional investors, and optimism surrounding a potential India-US trade deal after the US Treasury Secretary said that India can be first to sign a trade deal," said Vikas Jain, Head of Research at Reliance Securities.
"FIIs have been net buyers for seven consecutive sessions—their longest streak since December 2023—injecting nearly Rs300 billion into the market during this period.

India's Kotak International receives investment management licence from UAE regulator

Kotak International, the global investment management unit of India's third-largest private bank Kotak Mahindra, has received a licence to conduct investment activities in the UAE, allowing it to tap into the country's substantial Indian expat community. The company, which had more than $6 billion in assets under management at the end of June, said it is the first Indian asset manager to receive such a licence from the UAE's Securities and Commodities Authority. The licence will not only allow Mumbai-based Kotak International to launch UAE-domiciled funds for retail investors, but will also help in boosting the investment fund industry in the Arab world's second-largest economy, it said in a statement on Monday. Kotak is planning to launch funds similar to its undertakings for collective investment in transferable securities (Ucits) domiciled in India and Luxembourg, with subscriptions expected to open for investors in the UAE later this year, it added. Tapping into the UAE's growing investment scene is complemented by India's economic momentum and investor interest in diversifying their portfolios, Kotak International president Shyam Kumar said. 'India's economic momentum continues to attract global interest and through this licence ... UAE retail investors [will be able to] access India-focused investment strategies − enabling them to participate in one of the world's dynamic and resilient markets," he added. The UAE and India have maintained strong economic relations for decades, with mutual co-operation in several key sectors, including investments and finance. The relationship between the countries was further boosted by the signing of a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement, one of dozens the Emirates has forged to strengthen its own economy and benefit from the investment potential of other countries. Indians currently comprise the UAE's largest expat community, with more than 3.5 million residents in the country. Obtaining a licence will help Kotak International convert part of that community into a significant client pool, in addition to supporting revenue streams and global expansion, said Faisal Hasan, chief investment officer of Dubai-based financial services firm Al Mal Capital. "This strengthens their [assets under management] base with more stable diaspora flows, enhances brand credibility and helps diversify their distribution in the UAE and the Gulf at large," he told The National. "It enhances trust and credibility among investors, especially retail Indian expatriates who may be cautious about cross-border investments." The move also shows that UAE regulators are willing to accommodate cross-border financial products, as long as they meet transparency and compliance standards, he added. "There is also scope to market to Indian family offices and HNWIs [high net worth individuals] in the UAE who already have emotional and business ties to India ... this suggests a friendlier environment for foreign investment firms that want to access the UAE market," Mr Hasan said. Kotak International's entry also further cements the UAE's status as a "strong and strategic hub" for financial activity, said Osama Al Saifi, managing director for the Middle East and North Africa Dubai-based financial services firm Traze. "For financial groups with little or no presence in the UAE, it demonstrates opportunities for growth, diversification and cross-border investment, encouraging them to consider entering the market," he told The National. Kotak International, founded in 1994, offers management, advisory and investment solutions seeking exposure to Indian markets, and has offices in Abu Dhabi, Dubai, London, Mauritius, New York and Singapore. The company has also received regulatory approval in Mauritius, Singapore, the US and the UK to conduct investment activities and services.

India's unemployment rate eases to 5.2% in July

India's unemployment rate fell to 5.2% in July from 5.6% in the previous month, the statistics ministry said on Monday, as rural hiring picked up ahead of the festival season and on agricultural activity. The jobless rate among those aged 15 years and above in rural areas fell to 4.4% from 4.9% in June, while it rose in urban areas to 7.2% from 7.1% in June, the data showed. Among urban youth aged 15 to 29 years, unemployment increased to 19.0% in July from 18.8% in June. In rural areas, the youth jobless rate declined to 13% from 13.8% in the previous month. It was 13.7% in May. The unemployment rate for the April-June period, the first quarter of current fiscal year, was estimated at 5.4% among those aged 15 years and above, the ministry said. India's federal government has announced plans to cut its goods and services tax by October, after rising tensions with the United States over steep tariff hikes announced by President Donald Trump on Indian goods, in a bid to shore up local manufacturing and support jobs. The labour force participation rate (LFPR) - the share of people aged 15 years or more working, seeking work or available for work in the population - rose to 54.9% in July from 54.2% in June, the ministry said. S&P Global Ratings on Thursday upgraded India's long-term sovereign credit rating to 'BBB' from 'BBB-', the first upgrade in 18 years, citing strong economic growth, improved monetary policy credibility, and sustained fiscal consolidation. India's real GDP growth averaged 8.8% between fiscal 2022 and 2024, the highest in Asia-Pacific, and is projected to grow at 6.8% annually over the next three years. Morocco seeks US investors for gas pipeline project with Nigeria

Morocco showcased its ambitious gas pipeline project that will connect Nigeria's gas supply to Moroccan and European markets at the US-Africa Energy Forum held on 6-7 August in Texas. Morocco's presentation on this crucial international stage marks a significant step toward securing foreign backing at a key time when US investors are actively seeking to boost energy projects across Africa, Moroccan newspapers said. They said that Nawfal Drari, Director of Project Finance at Morocco's National Office of Hydrocarbons and Mines (ONHYM), the pipeline's parent-tenderer, delivered talking points covering the $25 billion initiative's progress and investment opportunities, adding that the project has reached a 'strategic phase.' Launched in 2017 the project has reached a final investment decision (FID) and a show of support from US investors could catapult that progress into an accelerated reality. 'For Morocco, the pipeline represents more than just energy infrastructure. The government views it as a catalyst for economic transformation that will create thousands of jobs and establish the North African country as a primary energy transit hub connecting Europe, Africa, and the Atlantic basin.' The massive pipeline will stretch approximately 6,000 kilometres across multiple African countries, connecting Nigeria's natural gas reserves to Morocco and eventually to European markets. Engineers designed the system to carry between 15 and 30 billion cubic metres of natural gas annually. (Writing by Nadim Kawach; Editing by Anoop Menon)
