Netflix fans go wild for ‘best Western they've ever seen' featuring major A-list star

Daily Mirror26-04-2025

Netflix fans have been thrilled by a 'powerful' Western movie on the streaming platform, as they all shared their reaction to the incredible acting and plot.
Netflix viewers have been raving about a powerful Western film they have just discovered.
The Power of the Dog is a 2021 American Western psychological drama film directed by Jane Campion, based on the 1967 novel of the same name by Thomas Savage. The film stars Benedict Cumberbatch, Kirsten Dunst, Jesse Plemons, and Kodi Smit-McPhee. It tells the story of two brothers, Phil and George Burbank, who run a cattle ranch in Montana, and the psychological manipulation Phil inflicts on his brother's new wife, Rose, and her son, Peter.

Fans were heartbroken when the movie was removed from Netflix UK in August 2023 due to BBC Films owning the rights. Thankfully, Netflix confirmed its return to the platform in August 2024. The huge film might not be your typical Western, but viewers have been loving it.

One person wrote: "Well I'll be damned. Just saw the dog in the mountains. Mystery solved. Great film." Another said: "The Power Of The Dog builds tremendous force, gaining its momentum through the harmonious discord of its performances, the nervous rhythms of Jonny Greenwood's score and the grandeur of its visuals."
Meanwhile, on IMDB, someone else wrote: "I just randomly watched this movie, not knowing anything about it at all, just that I like Benedict as an actor. It was slow and sort of unsettling and I had to ponder the movie for a while after it finished. Let me just say this, the devil is in the details with this one. Pay very close attention when watching it, I think it pays off pretty well.
They added: "I had several 'oh crap' moments after the movie, when I started connecting the dots. To call this a Western is a bit misleading, the setting is in the west (Montana) but that really has nothing to do with the movie at all, nor should it define its genre
"I can see how folks might not like this one due to the pacing and some of the subject matter but the acting really is quite good and the movie is well made. Also, let's just say the ending might pass right over some people's head if they hadn't been paying attention or had already made up their mind what the movie was about. I'd really love to say more but spoilers and all. I think this one will start out slow with audiences but will age well over time," the film fan concluded.
Benedict Cumberbatch previously spoke about his role in the movie, particularly how he portrayed his character. In an interview with NPR, he explained how different the American West was from his own life, making the role a challenge. To get into character, the actor wore unwashed clothes throughout the shoot, saying, "The minute I put those clothes on, I was [Phil]. I could smell him."

Chilling story of worst ever social media con woman but fans have just days to watch

Belle Gibson's chilling story has captured the attention of millions around the world. But what was the truth behind the lies? The story of Belle Gibson, a so-called Australian 'wellness influencer', has led to multiple documentaries and closer looks into her claim to fame and its eventual debunking. Belle rose to prominence back in 2013 after blogging about her 'battle with cancer' and alleging she had beaten brain cancer using nutrition, eating a plant-based diet, and employing alternative therapies — a claim that was later declared false when it was revealed she never had cancer in the first place. ‌ She launched her Instagram page in that same year, quickly amassing over 200,000 followers, a feat that was considered particularly impressive considering Instagram was a relatively new social media platform at the time. ‌ Belle went on to launch The Whole Pantry app, described by the Australian media as 'the world's first health, wellness and lifestyle app'. With over 200,000 downloads in its first month, it seemed there was no looking back for Belle Gibson and her flourishing career as a wellness guru. The app and its spin-off cookbook resulted in sales worth over $500,000 Australian dollars (£252,000), from which Belle promised to donate a sizable chunk of her profits to multiple charities. Reaching the apex of her fame in 2014 the influencer's wellness empire came swiftly tumbling down in April 2015 when reporters uncovered Belle had falsified the figures of how much money she had given to charity, leading to further investigations which ultimately uncovered inconsistencies in her story and diagnosis, including her alleged medical records and crucial details of her 'illness'. Exposed by journalists as a fraud, Belle confessed, "No, none of it's true," in a 2015 interview with Women's Weekly, instead placing blame on a dodgy doctor named 'Mark Johns', whose victim she claimed to be. In 2017, the influencer was fined AUD 410,000 for misleading readers, followed by a home raid by authorities in 2021 after her dues remained unpaid. Belle Gibson's meteoric rise to fame (and subsequent downfall) sparked significant public interest, inspiring multiple adaptations of her story for the screen. Apart from Netflix's six-episode, 2025 drama series Apple Cider Vinegar, Belle's story also prompted the 2021 BBC documentary, Bad Influencer: The Great Insta Con, which premiered on BBC Three. Currently available to stream for free on BBC iPlayer, Bad Influencer: The Great Insta Con will leave the streaming service on Friday, June 20. Directed and produced by Ziyaad Desai, the 45 minute documentary takes a closer look at the life of Belle Gibson and is depicted through the eyes of those who loved her — and those who exposed her. The documentary enlists former fans of the influencer — who had believed her extraordinary story and been greatly inspired by it — to share the impact Belle had on their lives. The BBC documentary's synopsis reads: "Seen through the eyes of those who adored her and those who exposed her, this film lifts the lid on one of social media's great mysteries: who was the real Belle Gibson – an ingenious con artist or damaged young woman trapped in a lie?"

The Pale Blue Eye, a 2022 mystery film, stars Christian Bale as detective Augustus Landor who partners with a young Edgar Allan Poe, played by Harry Melling, to solve a murder A 2022 mystery film currently streaming on Netflix has viewers enthralled with its blend of historical fiction, thanks in large part to a gripping performance by Christian Bale. The movie has left audiences "utterly mesmerised" with its intricate storyline. Helmed by Scott Cooper and based on Louis Bayard's novel, the film sees Christian Bale star as Augustus Landor, an expert detective called to West Point in 1830 to probe a gruesome murder of a cadet. He is paired with a quirky young cadet - none other than the legendary Edgar Allan Poe, brought to life by Harry Melling. ‌ As the lifeless body is discovered, the investigation becomes an entangled web of secrets before arriving at a stunning climax that flips the entire narrative on its head. The unpredictable twists and turns have led viewers to call the film captivating. ‌ On Rotten Tomatoes, one viewer praised the film saying: "I have to start by saying this movie exceeded my expectations. The suspense was maintained throughout the two-hour journey, with plenty of "whodunit" moments to keep me intrigued and invested. "The film struck the perfect balance of twists and turns, making it an exciting and worthwhile watch without ever feeling predictable. The main cast delivered strong performances, with nothing to disrupt my immersion or distract me from feeling as if I were right alongside Augustus Landor and Edgar Allan Poe, eager to solve the mystery at hand.", reports Surrey Live. Another fan echoed the sentiments adding: "Good mystery Christian Bale has a Great performance And The twist is great I didn't see it coming it's also good to see you harry potters cousin in something not Harry Potter Just a little toooooo long 7/10." One person said: "Definitely a Must See movie! The best portrayal of Edgar Allan Poe I have EVER seen! ! ! I have no idea how he didn't get Best Supporting Actor for this role." Another added: "The Pale Blue eye is a decent murder mystery film with a few twists and turns in the plot to keep it interesting. It starts off a bit slow, but the good acting and great setting kept me in it until I was invested in the story. Worth a watch if you like the 19th century setting with dark undertones." Not only does Christian Bale lead the cast, but 'The Pale Blue Eye' also features an impressive ensemble including Gillian Anderson, Lucy Boynton, Robert Duvall, and Toby Jones. The film has garnered acclaim for its atmospheric visuals by Masanobu Takayanagi and the spine-chilling score composed by Howard Shore, both contributing to the film's ominous feel. Upon its debut, 'The Pale Blue Eye' received a mixed reception from critics. While the performances, especially Harry Melling's rendition of Poe, were praised, some critics felt the plot resolution was somewhat lacking. 'The Pale Blue Eye' is available on Netflix, presenting a smartly woven historical drama that marries real-life characters with a gripping murder mystery. It holds a 63% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a 6.6/10 on IMDb.
